Episode 349 - Does ERP Always Work For OCD?
Book your free session directly, visit: www.robertjamescoaching.com
Does ERP always work for OCD is a question that I often hear. The research shows that ERP really does work well for OCD, so why do some people find that it doesn't work for them?
Today we take a look at some of the problems people can encounter with ERP to help you find find ways to overcome those problems. In my personal experience exposure work is an important part of the puzzle with overcoming OCD and if it isn't working, that doesn't mean that it won't, but rather it might need to be applied in different ways in order for you to find success with it.
A big part of this process if communication. Opening up lines of communication with your ERP therapist/specialist is essential to overcoming any potential problems that might come up.
As always I hope you enjoy and if you have any questions, please do let me know.

Today's episode is all about the importance of acceptance and why accepting OCD does not mean that you are simply giving in to it. In my experience acceptance is more about learning how to allow the difficult sensations, thoughts and demands for certainty that OCD so often creates.

Today I chat with Angie Read about overcoming adversity and dealing with anxiety and change.
Angie Read is a driven and devoted mother of three who had a massive stroke at age 46. She had a career she loved and thrived in, one she never expected to be ripped away without warning. Following more than 25 successful years as a public relations professional, she took a career detour and co-authored a book about marketing to Gen Z. She had plans of traveling the world to speak about this topic.
But the Universe had other plans. After her stroke, she was plagued by post-stroke anxiety (PSA) and post-stroke depression (PSD), and had to use every resource available to survive the lies her brain was telling her.
Today, Angie is back in fighting form. She has returned to the communications career she so thoroughly enjoys. Now, Angie is sharing her story-and the tips and tools that helped her survive-to help as many fellow stroke survivors as possible. Because nobody has to struggle alone. There is hope!
There are lots of things that we talk about today that are very applicable to OCD and I hope you enjoy and find it helpful.

Having a plan and knowing what you can fall back on in everyday life with OCD is an important part of overcoming the challenges that it presents. In my experience, when we have a good idea of the best tools for getting ourselves unhooked from our obsessions in typical day to day settings, then we tend to be more prepared for those challenging moments.
As always I hope you enjoy and find it helpful, if you have any questions, then please let me know.

One of the questions I get asked a lot about OCD is 'because I've been struggling with OCD for so long, does that mean I'm always going to be stuck'?
It is of course a very negative question, but I totally get where it is coming from. Many people fear being stuck with OCD, like a sentence that they are going to have to serve out.
But in my experience, OCD really isn't like this. Yes, it is challenging, but at any point you can start to have a different relationship with it and when you do, it may surprise you how quickly OCD can begin to fall away.
We don't have to stay stuck at all and today's podcast is a hopeful episode where we take a look at how to overcome that feeling of stickiness. I hope you enjoy and find it helpful.

Many people with OCD struggle with the fear of making mistakes. A big part of getting over this is in my experiences learning how to allow ourselves to make mistakes sometimes.
My view is taken from the work of Carol Dwek who pioneered the idea of having a growth mindset or fixed mindset. Struggling with OCD is very much about being caught up in a fixed mindset and learning how to loosen that up can be incredibly helpful. I hope you enjoy :)
