Mad Scientist Ben Newsome on how being entertaining is the best way to educate | #374

Ex Science teacher turned entrepreneur Ben Newsome reveals the marketing ideas that helped him build an empire| The secret to finding anyone’s email address | How to never run out of solid content ideas | How a little black dress lead to a big idea. Today on your favourite marketing podcast, successful business owner is Ben Newsome of Fizzics Education. He used to be a Science teacher, until the entrepreneurial bug bit him in 2004. Now he has staff all over Australia delivering interactive science workshops and shows to schools, retirement homes … even prisons! In fact, in the past 12-months they’ve entertained and educated over 300,000 kids alone with their crazy brand of scientific mayhem! Now, Ben’s been a long time listener of this show, and has a huge respect for the power of marketing; hence my interest in getting him on. During this chat, he generously shares the top 3 marketing strategies that have impacted most on his business’s growth, the importance of being entertaining in order to get a message across and plenty more marketing gold.   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont from 52 Ways gives us the secret to finding anyone’s email address at the click of a button I’ll show you how to never run out of solid content ideas And we go back into The Small Business Big Marketing Show’s vault, revisiting a past episode in with a bloke who’s business idea came to him whilst he was hanging out his wife’s LBD!   Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Ben Newsome of Fizzics Education: 100 Free Science Experiments. This is genius. Not only will it create massive goodwill amongst teachers who may one day book Ben and his team, but the amount of Google Juice it would create is off the charts. Creating an employee brand. Ben has worked hard at creating a look, feel and environment that attracts and retains great people. That alone is good for business …. Plus it means his HR costs are minimal. Ben’s sustained enthusiasm for marketing. I gotta say, I don’t see this enough. I see a lot of enthusiasm, just not sustained enthusiasm, where the business owner truly respects the power of marketing to the point that it’s constantly on their mind, where they’re trying to figure out how to improve on what’s already working and what to introduce into the mix next.   Links & Resources mentioned: Fizzics Education's website Blog post containing more marketing ideas from Ben How to never run out of helpful content ideas How to find anyone’s email address Interview with Scott Boocock, Founder of HEGs   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 373 - Guest Masterchef Nick Holloway of Nu Nu on how he’s built an iconic Australian restaurant

Nick Holloway is the co-founder of Nu Nu, an idyllic restaurant in Palm Cove, Far North Queensland. He’s also been a guest celebrity chef on the TV hit series MasterChef. Not only is Nu Nu ideally located right on the sand, it’s also highly awarded with accolades including being ranked in Gourmet Traveller’s Top 100 Australian restaurants for six years running. I first met Nick a few weeks ago in the middle of a cane field between Cairns and Port Douglas - he was cooking for 600 plumbers and electricians as part of a conference for the Laser Group at which I was a keynote speaker. Nick himself is a passionate foodie, so much so that he was chosen to be a guest chef on the top-rating reality cooking show Masterchef for the past two years. What that did for his personal and business brands? Well, you’re about to find out. He’s also a stickler for creating an unforgettable customer experience, and a brand people love and talk about for years to come. Topics we cover in great depth during our chat. In the cutthroat world of hospitality, Nick’s list of achievements is impressive.   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont from 52 Ways shares a great way to secure all your social media usernames I share another low cost marketing idea that’ll help you get more love from your precious customers And we go back into The Small Business Big Marketing Show’s vault, revisiting a past interview with a business owner who had her product featured at this year’s Oscars!   Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Nick Holloway of Nu Nu: Opportunities come from relationships, so spend time nurturing and building as many relationships as you can. If you want a place to start, then revisit that idea I shared recently about never eating along. I’ll drop a link in the shownotes. I find Nick’s amusement at the validation he got from being on Masterchef quite amusing! Getting a little media coverage can be so powerful. So look for opportunities - you could start by simply calling talk-back radio stations and contributing to topics of interest. Plus I’ve dropped a link to a past interview in the shownotes in which media ninja Sam Elam shared some great tips on getting free media. Run towards things, not away from them.   Links & Resources mentioned: Nu Nu website Customer Reviews - How to get & use them effectively Search for an available username or domain and secure your brand across the internet. 372 - How your business can absolutely do good by doing good with Peter Baines of Hands Across The Water.

Peter Baines is an international speaker on leadership, change management and corporate social responsibility. In a past life, Peter was a police officer, a forensic investigator heading up clean-up teams in the Bali Bombings and Thailand Tsunami. He’s also worked in Interpol’s counter-terrorism unit. He’s seen it all. But you might be wondering, what value does he have to bring to your small business? Well, Peter’s now the founder of the Thailand-based charity Hands Across The Water, and a massive advocate for helping businesses of all sizes do good by doing good. In fact, he’s written a book on the topic. During this chat, Peter shares some really solid strategies around how creating shared value is the key to powering business growth and innovation - and he backs them up with real life, small business case studies.   Plus in episode 372 of Australia’s best marketing podcast: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont from 52 Ways shares a great way to never make a grammar or spelling mistake again I share another low cost marketing idea that’ll show you how to use industry events to your advantage And we go back into The Small Business Big Marketing Show’s vault, revisiting a past interview that lifted the lid on how to master the art of selling   Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Peter Baines of Hands Across The Water: Businesses of all sizes can do good by doing good. What many (including me) may have once considered a soft strategy for growth, is clearly not. I love the idea of creating shared experiences. There’s no doubt that once two people are emotionally connected, the business relationship takes on a whole new dynamic. If you want to see that in action, go back and take a listen to an episode I did on racing car sponsorship. There’s nothing wrong with wanting a return on investment from having a strong social conscience.   Links & Resources mentioned: Peter Baines’ personal website Hands Across The Water Interview with sales guru Nicholas Lynch How to use industry events to get more business How to ensure everything you type is clear, effective & mistake-free   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 371 - Celebrity endorsement helped Radek Sali sell Swisse Multivitamins for $1.7 billion

Radek Sali knows a thing or two about celebrity endorsement - as the 40 year old, retired CEO Radek Sali of Swisse Multivitamins - a wellness business that sells supplements, skincare and superfoods, he’s used celebrity endorsement as a way to build one of Australia’s biggest brands. I sat next to Radek recently at a Hawthorn Football Club function, and I was pretty damn excited, as the Swisse brand is one that I’ve admired from a distance for many years. From it’s high quality packaging, to it’s brand consistency, to it’s relentless celebrity endorsement efforts (think Nicole Kidman, Ellen Degeneres, Ricky Ponting to name a few) and high frequency TV and print advertising schedule, Swisse would have to be one of the most well-known and respected brands in Australia. Radek started there in 2005 as the Operations Manager, he left there last year as a part owner having sold the business for $1.7 billion! He attributes celebrity endorsement strategy and an honest and meaningful business culture to the brand’s success Awards won by Radek and his team include BRW’s Most Successful Business of the Year (2012); GQ Businessman of the Year; and in 2016 Ernst & Young’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year (for Pharmaceuticals). Plus in episode 371 of Australia’s best marketing podcast: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont from 52 Ways brings back the GIPH … not the GIMP, the GIPH! I share another low cost marketing idea that’ll increase your average dollar amount per sale And we go back into The Small Business Big Marketing Show’s vault, revisiting a past interview with the creator of the world’s most viral marketing video Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Radek Sali of Swisse Multivitamins: I love the idea that as brand builders we're part of a Ferrari Formula One crew, and that whatever we’re working on we should be at full throttle, ready for it to all disintegrate once we get to the finish line. “The sky is just the beginning.” - talk about glass half full! Radek is one of the more optimistic people I’ve ever met. I love how he’s always looking for a way to make something work. I loved how he visited his retailers when he first stepped into the business all those years ago. If he hadn’t done that, he wouldn’t have uncovered the celebrity endorsement strategy that Centrim were using so well. I loved his modesty. I mean the guy is responsible or building one of Australia's most successful brands, he’s made $255M in doing so … but his ego was very in check. I loved the the 3 pillars of premium, proven and aspirational, through which all business decisions were evaluated. 370 - How one simple marketing idea doubled Melissa Westcott’s Big On Shoes business in just 12-months

Melissa Westcott founded Big On Shoes, Australia’s home to plus-sized fashion shoes. What’s of particular interest is she applied one simple marketing idea that doubled her business in the past 12-months. It’s an idea that you could implement in a heartbeat. In fact, if you’re not doing it already, you’re very naughty! I was introduced to Melissa from past guest and digital nomad, Mark Phillips from Business in Bare Feet. Hitting me up on Facebook Messenger (isn’t that happening more often?!) he said: Hey Timbo. Let me introduce you to Melissa Westcott from BigOnShoes. At a function today she was telling me how she loves your show. Yet she in her own right is an amazing startup. From her kitchen table in Moranbah in central Queensland, she set up an online shoe store for 'ladies' with large feet. Today she's one of the world's largest suppliers of womens’ shoes to the global transvestite & sex-change market! Go figure. She’s doubled her business lately from one of your podcasts! Let me know if you’d like to interview her & I'll set up an intro. Damn right I’d like an interview! And that’s what you’re about to listen to … plus, in episode 370 of Australia’s best marketing podcast I’ll: Show you how to get more online love for your business Share some big news about upcoming guests Divulge a marketing problem that I can’t solve Go back into the vault, revisiting a rather inspiring past episode   Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Melissa Westcott of Big On Shoes: Get back to your purpose. This one’s hard to argue given it doubled Melissa’s business over the past 12-months. So … if you find yourself trying to be everything to everyone, then maybe it’s time to stop, refocus and figure out why you started your business in the first place, what was that big issue your clients have that you solve so well. Get clear on your customer's’ objections. Then, one by one, create marketing and improvements to your overall offering that address them head on. If your customers have no objections, then all they can really do is well ... buy from you! Track your numbers. Now I’ll be the first to admit that this one’s not my strong suit. However, it clearly works - I’ve spoken to way too many successful business owners who do this. So, if numbers aren’t your thing, then find someone who loves them (your accountant, a coach, a staff member) and get them to set up a dashboard for you that you can track on at least a weekly basis. That dashboard may include sales, email open rates, database sign ups, new clients, Google rankings  … whatever numbers mean the most to you.   Links & Resources mentioned: Melissa’s website Big On Shoes Interview with past guest and digital nomad Mark Phillips How to get more online lovin’ from Forum involvement   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 369 – Dale Beaumont’s 7 (ridiculously simple) steps to creating highly profitable business partnerships

Does the idea of getting your beautiful business in front of hundreds, if not thousands more of your ideal customers excite you. No need to answer that … of course it does! Then join Business Blueprint’s Dale Beaumont and I as we detail the 7 steps to creating highly effective partnerships. Here’s what else we cover in episode 369 of Australia’s #1 marketing podcast: A productivity tool to make your life a whole lot easier I share another low cost marketing idea that ensures you have a ridiculously consistent brand And we go back into the vault, revisiting a past inspiring episode As per usual, there’s marketing G.O.L.D. dripping from the ceiling over at Small Business Big Marketing’s HQ … So let’s get stuck ... right in.   A little bit about today’s successful business owner Dale Beaumont: Dale has been helping business owners grow for over a decade with his Blueprint Membership program. He’s also the brains behind the 52 Ways live events. I attended the Melbourne one, and boy oh boy, it was incredible. What I love about Dale is his unwavering commitment to helping business owners create a business and lifestyle they love. Plus he practices what he preaches – every business building idea he shares, he’s tested in his own business.   Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Dale Beaumont of Business Blueprint: Budsies! I love the idea of Budsies! Dale showed me a photo of the one he’d been sent – it looked just like him! Sending someone one of these is a great way to get their attention. What’d Dale call this tactic? A shock and awe package! Feel free to send me one – Po Box 989, Mt Eliza 3930 :0) Get clear on what you have to give before you put your hand out for the ask. This is pretty much true of anything in life, really? Gary Vaynerchuk also talks at length about this in his book on social media called Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook. The power of partnerships. In my experience, this is a very under-utilised marketing strategy, yet one that has the potential for such a big impact on your business’s growth. So, if you liked what Dale had to share, then please … implement it.    Links & Resources mentioned: Dale’s business – Business Blueprint Dale’s live event – 52 Ways Past episode in which Dale Beaumont shares his growth story How to build confidence with your customers A great resource for finding and hiring freelancers   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 368 - Low Cost (Yet Effective) Marketing Ideas For Small Business With Jasky Singh From K2AV

Effective marketing doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, some of the best marketing ideas I’ve seen to help small businesses grow, have been incredibly cheap. Sometimes all they cost is a little effort on behalf of the owner. Jasky Singh of K2 Audio Visual in Western Australia (a business that installs state-of-the-art audio visual technology into homes and offices), has embraced low cost marketing in a big way … and it’s working. Here’s an email he sent me a few weeks ago: Hey Timbo … I'm one of those listeners that have been with you since the early days. I’m a big fan of your show. I’d love to be a guest on one of your shows if that's of value to you. As I'm someone who directly applied tips and tricks from your episodes to take our business (K2AV) from a $500 investment to $15M in sales in <5 years. Just thought I'd put it out there. No stress if it isn't something that works for you mate. Keep up the great work :) So I asked Jasky to send me a list of the ideas he’s specifically implemented. He did and it’s a ripper. And that’s what we’re going to work our way through in today’s episode of your favourite marketing podcast. BTW, you’ll find Jasky’s complete list of low cost marketing ideas further down this page.   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: How to increase your business’s social media engagement How to make affordable marketing videos fast And we revisit a past episode where I chatted with a very old school marketer   Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Jasky Singh of K2AV: Find a way to enjoy your marketing. I’m probably preaching to the converted here, however, if you are finding marketing a struggle, then simply choose one aspect of it that you actually don’t mind and focus on it. That might be writing some blog posts, answering some FAQs, scheduling time to network or have lunch with some clients … whatever it is, just do it.  Curating the best ideas from his newsletter and turning it into a hard copy book. I’m doing this at the moment for my What Have You Got To Lose segment … I figure I’m already writing these ideas up as blog posts each week, and recording them as a segment in my show, so why not repurpose this existing content into a book?  Make as many phone calls to prospects and clients a day as you can. In fact, can I set you a challenge? Starting tomorrow, I want you to call 10 prospects or existing clients per day for 10 days - then I want you to email me with the results - good, bad or indifferent. Go! Here’s the complete list of Jasky’s business beliefs and marketing strategies that are helping him grow a business he loves: Business Beliefs: Be on the attack always. We’ve consistently fostered the mindset to search and keep looking for work/new clients instead of having an inbound strategy do the job for us. This has been the most important. Bring value up-front, have enough in the value bank before going in for the ask. Early on, not applying this approach tarnished our reputation with a few clients and had we applied this approach it would have lead to much greater outcomes. Niche is always better than broad, the more specific, the more pinpointed you can be when it comes to an audience, strategy, a pain point – the better the results. Be the best. This is the greatest marketing on its own. Low Cost Marketing Ideas For Small Business: A weekly newsletter providing tips, tricks, and thought provoking ideas to educators – with 2,000+ subscribers, this has opened many doors without ever asking for the sale. Compiling the best of the above newsletter and turning that into a physical book which we distributed to get into the door of clients – screenshot attached. Developing win-win relationships with suppliers, as we rarely ever do “sales” or “discounts” as that doesn’t work with our brand. We use our suppliers and negotiate deals through them that provide a win win scenario for them and our potential client, and we get to sit in between as the exclusive provider for a deal. Our latest campaign “Smart Board Buy Back” was an example of this which lead to $50,000 worth of additional sales. Before any presentation or pitch, we take a potential client for a visit to the work done for an existing client – the greatest sales pitch is to have an existing client in the same industry do the selling on your behalf. Better headlines for emails, better copywriting for marketing  campaigns and online ads. Using the AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) and WIIFT (What’s in it for them) strategies. Currently – Facebook video with niche targeting has been quite powerful to generate leads.   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 367 - Genius product launch ideas (including getting featured in The Oscars) with Kara Lauder from The Kader Boot Co.

Kara Lauder is a mum of one (soon to be two), lives in The Pilbara, works in the kmines and is the proud founder of Thea Kader Boot Co … and boy oh boy, the product launch strategies she’s put in place to ensure her business succeeds are nothing short of genius. From the quality of her boots, to implementing a far-reaching marketing ideas that include a clever use of social influencers, video, social media (particularly Instagram), selling at local markets and plenty more. She’s also very clear on what her brand stands for, which impacts what she will and won't get involved with.   Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Kara Lauder of The Kader Boot Co. : Lay the right foundations to ensure you build a tribe - Whether you're just launching your business, or if you’ve been in business for a while, be sure to get in place some solid marketing activities that will have your people standing up and taking notice. Strategic collaborations - We’ve talked about this before, and there’s a fantastic webinar inside the Forum about how to establish profitable partnerships. BUt Kara’s advice about teaming up with others that you work well with is excellent. And I love how she reaches out to them using Instagram! Invest the necessary time & money - I loved Kara’s willingness to head over to the Oscars or down to Perth (at the last minute!) in order to take advantage of these amazing opportunities that come her way. You gotta spend time and money to make it, right?   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: A great project management tool to make your teams more efficient A simple idea to improve the friendliness of your website And we revisit a past episode in which we caught up with Gelato Messina’s owner Declan Lee     Links & Resources mentioned: Kader Boot Co. on Instagram Kade Boot Co. on Facebook Kader Boot Co. website (in development at time of posting) Photographer Paul Pichugin’s website (thanks for the intro to Kara :) Interview with Gelato Messina’s Declan Lee WHYGTL blog post LJGAWLE blog post   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 366 - UGG Boot’s founder Brian Smith shares how this iconic brand began.

The iconic UGG Boot brand was founded by surfer Brian Smith in 1978 - it’s now a billion-dollar brand, but don’t be fooled … the early days were tough, until Brian made one small pivot. We cover plenty of ground in this chat including:  How to build a brand that connects  The importance of focussing on niches  The power of listening to your customers  He even gets a little woo-woo on us  Plus Brian shares the moment when UGG Boots went from a struggling footwearbusiness run by a couple of salty surfers, to something so much greater - in fact, it’s now a multi-billion dollar brand, although Brian no longer has anything to do with it. I touch more on that after the interview.   Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Brian Smith, founder of UGG Boots: “You can’t give birth to adults” - this applies not only to the growing of a business, but also the growing of a marketing strategy. Too many business owners have an expectation that the minute they launch a marketing initiative whether it be a podcast or an advertising campaign or whatever, that it must generate immediate ROI. Be patient! Niche down - Instead of going national with the successful surfer advertising campaign, I love how Brian chose to identify other niches and embed the UGG Brand that way. When it comes to creative marketing concepts, one size doesn’t fit all, so it’s worth spending quality time getting your message right for each niche. Have a guiding instinct - for Brian goosebumps are his way of knowing whether something is right or wrong. For me, I get this feeling deep within my gut. The challenge is to honour it. To actually have the courage to listen to it. That’s the hard part!   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Why & how to use screen capture technology How to use holidays to sell more And we revisit a past episode in which I spoke with a high-performance coach about, well, high performance!   Links & Resources mentioned: Brian Smith’s personal site UGG Boot’s website How to use screen capture technology How to increase sales during the holidays   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 365 - 5 Game-Changing Selling Tips To Close More Deals With Sales Expert Nicholas Lynch

Does selling freak you out? Well, you’re not alone. It used to freak me out until I spoke with sales expert Nicholas Lynch of Nicholas Lynch Real Estate, who shares 5 keys to closing every sale. And boy oh boy, they're not what I expected! Now I actually met Nicholas through one of my son’s who’s best mates with his son. I also used Nicholas to sell a house for me about a year ago. The guy is a sales machine. He loves everything about selling. So if you struggle with this part of your business (and many business owners and employees do), then you are absolutely going to love the 5 key selling tips he shares that all but guarantee you closing the sale each and every time. You know one of Nicholas’s mantras is A.B.C. - Always Be Closing!   Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Nicholas Lynch of Nicholas Lynch Real Estate: His doors analogy - This is such a great way to visualise the close. The key here is to identify what each door is in the closing process, then make sure you go through them in the order they were intended, closing each one as you go. Feel / Felt / Found - What a great way to bring prospects around to your way of thinking, by showing empathy. It’s also a simple structure for story-telling which we talk a lot about on this show. Have the right intention - Whilst I loved all of Nicholas’s 5 keys to nailing the sale, I particularly loved #2, which was all about having the right intention. I honour this one a lot when speaking from stage, recording this show, and pretty much any time I’m writing a proposal for a client.   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: How a maglog can help you sell more (you’ll find an example here as well) How to use social proof to build confidence with your prospects Plus we revisit a past episode with Ant Morell of Bounce   Links & Resources mentioned: Nicholas Lynch Real Estate’s website Interview with Ant Morell of indoor playground sensation Bouse   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits.
