Creative Constraints and Three-Minute Miles

Did you know the mural of the Creation of Adam in the Sistine Chapel was rushed to completion because the Pope threatened to throw Michelangelo off a scaffold if he didn’t finish quickly enough? The point here is that some of the best work can be done under a tight deadline. In this episode, Chad and Stephanie talk about how constraints and limitations can sometimes lead to your best work and why we should always be pushing for our own proverbial three-minute mile. They also talk about what it was like working with Alec Baldwin on the most recent season of The Story. The Art of Storytelling with Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin is an actor who has won numerous awards for his roles in TV and film. In his over 20-year career, Alec has portrayed a number of diverse roles- from Jack Donaghy in the Emmy-award winning show 30 Rock to Blake in the award-winning 90’s film, Glengarry Glen Ross. Recently, Alec partnered with the team at Mission to host Season 8 of The Story, a Mission-original podcast that tells the unknown backstories of some of the most fascinating people in history. Season 8 focused on the stories of eight veterans who helped shape American culture and history. In this episode, Alec sits down with Ian and Chad to discuss what drew him to working on The Story and why the characters he portrays on TV aren’t always reflective of his own personal beliefs. The History of Whiskey in America with Reid Mitenbuler

Reid Mitenbuler has spent the last several years researching how whiskey has influenced American history (and vice versa). The result of this research is his new book, Bourbon Empire: The Past and Future of America's Whiskey. In it, Reid takes a deep-dive into the history of American distilleries, from the pre-revolutionary war era all the way up to modern day manufacturing methods. In this episode, Chad and Reid sit down to discuss how whiskey grew from a few backyard distilleries to an industry that pumps out millions of bottles a year. Reid also talks about the secret history behind the industry that you won’t see in the commercials. 21st Century Investing with Brad Katsuyama

Wall Street is an industry mired in tradition and regulations. It has been a crucial part of America’s economy since its inception in 1792, less than 20 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. So how do you change an entire system that has spent hundreds of years defining its values? For Brad Katsuyama, CEO of the Investors Exchange (IEX), the solution was simple; build an entirely new system. IEX was created in 2012 by Brad and his co-founders to serve as an alternative to the existing stock exchanges like NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange. The goal of IEX was simple, to level a playing field that has been rigged for over 200 years to favor a few privileged power brokers. In this interview, Brad and Chad discuss how IEX is using new technologies to help investors and what they’re doing to make investing and the stock exchanges fair and straightforward for everyone, not just the elite. The Importance of Core Values with Bryce Maddock

Shortly after graduating from college, Bryce Maddock decided to leave his job as an investment banker in New York City to start a business with his close friend from high school, Jaspar Weir. The two moved down to Argentina to open up a frozen yogurt business that ended up falling flat, leading Bryce and Jaspar to move back home with their parents before starting their next venture together. Now, Bryce serves as the CEO and Co-Founder of TaskUs, a digital outsourcing service that is revolutionizing the customer experience. TaskUs —which turned out to be a far more successful venture than the frozen yogurt company — employs more than 15,000 people across the world today. In this episode, Chad and Bryce discuss what Bryce learned from the failure of his first company, how TaskUs attracts talent by emphasizing a great company culture, and why communication is the key to a successful business partnership. If you enjoy Bryce and Chad’s discussion on culture and communication, Bryce recommends checking out the book Crucial Conversations. Making Risky Choices with Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi is no stranger to risky business strategies. After Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Rahul came face-to-face with an issue most people don’t think twice about: where to store things in major metropolitan areas. While everyone else saw a problem with no solution, Rahul saw an opportunity. Rahul has since gone on to found and build MakeSpace, a storage solution business. Rahul Gandhi is the CEO of MakeSpace, a company disrupting the decades-old storage solutions industry with innovative technology and a fresh attitude What makes MakeSpace unique you ask? When you store something with MakeSpace, the goods are cataloged and moved to a storage facility. Then, when you want to reclaim one of your items, all you have to do is log onto your MakeSpace account, request what you want, and it’s delivered to your home (like Amazon Prime, but for your own possessions). In this interview, Chad and Rahul sit down to discuss the hard choices Rahul has had to make on his journey from start-up company to industry presence in 24 different cities. Rahul also discusses how he managed to compete in a crowded and very traditionalist industry. The Start-Up Mindset with Bracken Darrell

Bracken Darrell, CEO of Logitech, has more than 25 years of experience in business management for successful global consumer companies such as Whirlpool, Procter & Gamble and General Electric. In this episode, Bracken discusses how he’s helped structure Logitech as a large company comprised of smaller, start-up-like divisions, how to take big bets while controlling risks, and the future of gaming and entertainment technology.  Bracken also discusses why he thinks smaller teams are better teams in an article he wrote titled “Think Pairs, Not Teams”. He argues most successful teams are comprised of teams of multiples.
