Investing in the Future of Cryptocurrency with Kyle Samani
Cryptocurrency markets are, by their nature, fast-moving and difficult to predict. The constant ups and downs of the value of bitcoin have made headlines more than once. So, in one of the fastest-paced financial markets in the world, how do you track where things are going next? Kyle Samani is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Multicoin Capital, a thesis-driven crypto fund that invests in tokens and companies reshaping entire sectors of the global economy. Kyle and the team at Multicoin are wired into the most up-to-date and important trends in the crypto marketplace. Prior to his work with Multicoin, Kyle co-founded Pristine, an enterprise software company that helps deskless workers integrate smart glasses into their workflow. Through his leadership, Pristine raised over $5 million in venture capital and millions of dollars in revenue before being acquired by Upskill in 2017. In this episode, Kyle and Chad sit down to talk about the future trends Kyle’s noticing in the crypto markets, why he chose to place roots in Austin instead of Silicon Valley, and Kyle’s experience with crypto regulation at both a national and international level. 27:38- “We are a truth seeking organization. That’s our goal, to make sense of all this noise, understand the truth and then bet on that truth happening.” 28:02- “Make sure if you’re going to talk about data, that you’re not getting cause and effect backwards. If you’re going to make a causal argument on data then you need to be able to explain causation and not just say they are correlated.” Follow Kyle on Twitter at @KyleSamani. Owning Your Digital Identity with Daniel Buchner
In the modern age of technology, your digital identity is becoming increasingly important. How does someone use websites and services like Amazon, Google, and Apple without compromising on privacy and security? Many of the answers can be gleaned from Daniel Buchner, Senior PM and Head of Decentralized Identity at Microsoft. Daniel and his team at Microsoft have made it their mission to create a more secure and private internet where your identity is protected. He also represents Microsoft in the Decentralized Identity Foundation, and is working with members of DIF and W3C to make decentralized identity a reality. Daniel’s also spent time at Mozilla, where he ran the Developer Ecosystem product group and various W3C Web standards efforts. In this interview, Chad and Daniel sit down to discuss what Daniel and his team at Microsoft are working on, why secure data and financial transfers are becoming more and more prominent, and how Daniel and Microsoft are helping to lead the charge for data privacy. 2:46- “You should be in control of all elements of your identity and know what you disclose and have the ability to minimize that disclosure so that you stay safe and private.” 9:05- “I think it’s to put users back in control of their daily lives and so much of that is digital these days. Once you do that, you empower people with privacy. I think people should gain a security in what the fourth amendment promises and what some of our rights promise.” 23:02- “I think the extent that you believe in something will determine the persistence you have in going after it.” Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Unbank Yourself with Alex Mashinsky
Alex Mashinsky is the CEO and Co-Founder of Celsius Network, a network that lets you earn interest on crypto and instantly borrow against it. “Unbank yourself” is the company’s motto and for good reason. Celsius is disrupting the world of banking and financial management, which has long sought to regulate and limit the market for their own interests. “We feel that banks have become such monopolistic institutions that they stopped caring for their depositors, they only care for their shareholders. They are basically extracting way too much from all of us, the 99% of Americans who are not part of the 1%, and giving it all to the few people who are the major shareholders of these institutions.” Celsius is changing that and Alex is leading the charge. His personal experiences have afforded him a unique perspective and understanding of financial systems. According to his website he was, “born into communism, reared under socialism, and is currently thriving under capitalism.” He’s also a prolific inventor, holding over 50 patents as well as over a dozen awards for his work in the technology and finance field. In this episode, Ian and Alex talk about how Alex and Celsius are working to disrupt the banking industry, what Celsius is looking to build in the long-term and lessons Alex has learned from his previous business ventures that he used while building Celsius. 2:11 – “We feel that banks have become such monopolistic institutions that they stopped caring for their depositors, they only care for their shareholders. They are basically extracting way too much from all of us, the 99% of Americans who are not part of the 1%, and giving it all to the few people who are the major shareholders of these institutions.” 3:09 – “Tenacity and doing the right thing does pay off.” 6:01 – “The blockchain is a new revolution. It’s an even bigger wave than the internet wave because it touches all the money in the world. It’s like a new set of rails. Just like Voice Over IP needed a new set of rails to disrupt phone companies. The blockchain is a new set of rails that is disrupting the banking and the money supply which really has been abused by central banks and governments for the last 50 years.” 10:27 – “All of us should have our money work for us, not just us work for our money.” 21:48 – “You need to kill your existing business and build it on the blockchain.” Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. 101 Days of Bitcoin with Austin Craig
Is it possible to live and thrive using nothing but bitcoin? For Austin Craig and his wife, Beccy, this question served as the inspiration for their documentary Life on Bitcoin. The film follows Austin and Beccy as they attempt to purchase food, shelter and other necessities using nothing but bitcoin for 101 days. It’s exactly that kind of adventurous spirit and innovative thinking that inspired us to hire Austin as the producer of our newest (and still secret) podcast. In this episode, Stephanie and Austin sit down to discuss the struggles and triumphs of living on nothing but bitcoin for over three months. They also talk about how to see past the crypto hype for a clearer view of what the future holds for bitcoin. The Past, Present, and Future of Cryptocurrency with Anthony Pompliano
Anthony Pompliano is a Co-Founder & Partner at Morgan Creek Digital and a crypto influencer. Through his work at Morgan Creek, Anthony manages capital on behalf of institutional investors. Together, he and his investors are helping foster an ecosystem that may be nascent today, but has exponential growth potential in the long term. Anthony believes crypto and other digital currencies are the way of the future because of their ability to be both secure and transparent. In this episode, he and Ian discuss the ways in which crypto has become popular, even in its infancy, and the path it will take as it matures into a widely-used method of payment and asset management. 14:47 - “One of the hardest things in the world is to be an independent thinker. It is a learned skill. It’s more about courage than anything else, and trust of yourself.” 22:20- “The beauty of all of this is it literally comes down to transparency. Transparency creates, not trust, but verifiability. The ability for me to verify everything you say is incredibly important.” 22:53- “There is a saying in crypto, “don’t trust, verify” and you can’t verify without transparency so that's really what all of this is.” Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Decentralizing Banking with Erik Voorhees
Our modern-day system of banking wasn’t always based on fiat currency controlled by the Federal Reserve. In fact, for most of U.S. history, there hasn’t been a central bank. It wasn’t until 1913 that the Federal Reserve was created and the dollar was no longer backed by gold or silver, thereby allowing for inflation. Cryptocurrency is changing the way we generate, store and transfer money. And for the first time ever, the idea of a centralized banking and financial system is slowly fading into the past. Erik Voorhees is the founder and CEO of ShapeShift, a company that allows the seamless transformation of cryptocurrency assets. In simpler terms, ShapeShift allows you to turn cryptocurrency like Bitcoin into another form of crypto, like Ether. Through his work with ShapeShift, Erik has gained a unique perspective on how the worlds of traditional and crypto finance interact and, more often than not, clash. His company has often faced criticism from both the media and mainstream financial institutions. In this interview, Chad and Erik sit down to discuss how ShapeShift is working to decentralize the financial and banking system. They also talk about how cryptocurrency and other digital currencies can be used to fight inflation and the crypto trends Erik’s excited about for the future.
