Dr. Matt Midkiff: "Pet Peeves" of a Physical Therapist & Future Evolution of the PT field

In this episode of the Brawn Body Health and Fitness Podcast, Dan is joined by Dr. Matt Midkiff, PT, DPT, CSCS to discuss various "pet peeves" in the world of Physical Therapy. The two discuss a variety of topics ranging from "HUM" clinics to lack of progression of exercises to inability to engage with a patient/client and so much more! As noted - the purpose of the episode is to shed light on areas that the PT field can improve on to help the profession evolve and move forward! Dr. Matt Midkiff grew up in Asheville, North Carolina then moved to California after being recruited to play soccer for Westmont College in Santa Barbra. After his family relocated to the Phoenix area, he decided to attend A.T. Still University of Health Sciences in Mesa to obtain his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Matt’s interest in physical therapy stems from his experiences as a young athlete. After dislocating his shoulder twice while training, he had to undergo surgery. However, this turned into a positive— his good experience with physical therapy post-surgery made him realize the career would be a good fit for him. When not working, Matt enjoys working out and competes in natural bodybuilding shows. He loves spending time with his wife and three kids, and has also coached soccer in the community for 20 years. He is working toward making his Gilbert physical therapy clinic a leading force in treating and preventing knee and ankle soccer injuries, especially among female athletes. He is also building a golf business at the clinic, and is a certified Golf Performance Specialist by Nike and the Gray Institute. His goal for Foothills in the future is to create an amazing patient experience that people enjoy coming to; he calls it the Cheers of physical therapy. “People come back to the clinic a year after they’ve finished physical therapy just to say hi,” he says. “We want people to enjoy working with our staff, and the staff to enjoy being there. That’s what sets us apart from the rest.” For more on Matt, you can find him on Instagram @sportsptmidkiff_fit or Tiktok @sports_pt_fit_midkiff To keep up to date with everything we are currently doing on the podcast, be sure to subscribe and follow @brawnbody on social media! Dr. Brad Simpson: Spine Manipulation, Thoracic Manipulation, Using the TMT

In this episode of the Brawn Body Health and Fitness Podcast, Dan is joined by Dr. Brad Simpson, PT, DPT, OCS, COMT, FAAOMPT to discuss Spine Manipulation with an emphasis on the thoracic spine. The two also discuss use of Brad's TMT device to help with manipulation of the thoracic spine.  Dr. Brad Simpson has worked in outpatient orthopaedics, as a physical therapist, for over fifteen years. He is passionate about learning the ‘whole’ patient, spending the time deciphering a person’s history and clinical picture to best treat each individual uniquely. His love for teaching leads to patients becoming empowered, learning how to manage their bodies and properly progress back to their hobbies and sports. Brad’s accomplishments in PT are a testament to his pursuit of excellence, something he is continuing to happily seek as he keeps evolving with research and clinical experience. Brad loves staying active with his family in the Pacific Northwest, going on hikes and camping, golfing, paddle boarding, and spending quality time with his daughter and Maltese puppy. “Each knee pain patient is treated differently, even if their pain is in the same location and hurts the same as somebody else. The patient’s background, their injury history, job demands, home-life, socioeconomic background, etc., all play into a patient’s ‘pain experience’. Building a program unique to each person’s needs is rewarding. Even better is seeing them get back to the hobbies they were limited in prior to coming to Reflex.” For more on Brad, you can find him at https://reflexknees.com/provider/brad-simpson-dpt-ocs or check out his TMT here: https://www.amazon.com/TMT-Thoracic-Manipulation-Spinal-Black/dp/B07CR3XVHJ  To keep up to date with everything we are currently doing on the podcast, be sure to subscribe and follow @brawnbody on social media! Dr. Will Waterman: Proteus Motion & The Next Generation of Sports Performance Training

In this episode of the Brawn Body Health and Fitness Podcast, Dan is joined by Dr. Will Waterman, Head of Performance and Sports Science at Proteus Motion.  TECHNOLOGY HAS REVOLUTIONIZED THE HEALTH & FITNESS INDUSTRY, BUT STRENGTH & POWER STILL CAN’T BE MEASURED EFFECTIVELY. Because to measure strength and power for movements you perform in real life, you need forces in 3 dimensions. Equipment like free weights and cable machines can only provide forces in 1 or 2 dimensions. To unlock the next revolution in human performance and fitness technology requires a total reinvention of resistance training. Head over to proteusmotion.com or @proteusmotion on social media to find out more!  Will Waterman, PT, DPT, OCS, PRC, COMT, CSCS Will Waterman is currently the Head of Performance and Sports Science at Proteus Motion. Before joining Proteus, Will practiced as a sports and orthopedic-focused physical therapist for 10 years which included roles as the head physical therapist with DePaul University’s D1 Athletes in Chicago, IL, Stanford Health Care in the Bay Area, as well as running his own PT consulting business. He received his B.S. in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of Georgia in 2007 before receiving his Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) from the Medical College of Georgia in 2010. Will has pursued multiple specialties including board certifications as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) from the American Physical Therapy Association, his Postural Restoration Certification (PRC) from the Postural Restoration Institute, a certification as an Orthopedic Manual Therapist (COMT) from the Ola Grimsby Institute, and a certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. As a self-described “body nerd”, Will has competed in numerous sports and athletic endeavors. He was a multi-sport youth athlete in Basketball, Football, Baseball, Wrestling, and Swimming. As is the case for many physical therapists, multiple injuries sparked his initial interest in physical therapy and training. During PT school, Will competed nationally in Olympic Weightlifting and more recently competed in Cycling as well as Triathlon at the national level. In addition to being a “body-nerd”, he is also a self-described “car-guy” that enjoys watching racing and taking his car to the track. He and his wife Jean are originally from Atlanta, Georgia, and enjoy traveling during their free time.
