RERUN | Paul Adelstein: Bloom Where You're Planted, Keep Moving Forward
Today we chat with Paul Adelstein, from Private Practice, Prison Break, Scandal, and Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce, as he lays out his 30 year career for us, sharing some of the most inspirational, motivational, and insightful stories, and how he’s managed to turn countless challenges into opportunities to win. Beginning in Chicago, he began his career as a member of John Cusack’s commedia-style theatre company. We talk about how the rigor of this group prepared him for anything, and as he shares with us here, there was a lot to be prepared for. From the jobs he’s lost, to the ones that have come to define his career, he’s unapologetically honest about what it takes to persevere and stay focused, even when everything seems to be falling apart. From a pre-audition pep-talk from John Travolta, to a meeting with Shonda Rhimes that lead to a direct offer, his journey proves that things always work themselves out, and often lead to beautiful, seemingly fortuitous, full-circle moments that make an artistic life worth the uncertainty and risk. Regardless of where you are on your journey, whether you’re at a peak, or feel stuck in a valley, today’s conversation is for you. Full of encouragement and optimism, this bird’s-eye-view of a career is a reminder that things are always working out for good. Your good and for the good of great storytelling. RERUN | Brandon Kyle Goodman: Commit to Your Energy
From bringing diverse, powerful characters to life on the screen, to writing scripts for one of the most successful television series on Netflix, Brandon Kyle Goodman has emerged in the entertainment industry as a powerful force with a voice to be reckoned with. This summer, Goodman can be seen starring in Netflix’s upcoming feature film, “Feel the Beat,” opposite Sofia Carson. The drama follows an out-of-work actress, April (Carson), who returns to her small hometown after failing to find success on Broadway and is soon recruited to train a misfit group of young dancers for a big competition. Goodman shines as the outspokenly brave, queer Deco, April’s neighbor and support system while she adjusts returning to her country life. “Feel the Beat” is slated to premiere on Netflix on June 19, 2020. Additional acting credits for Goodman include recently starring as Andy, an eager father-to-be, in Amazon’s successful rom-com anthology series, “Modern Love,” as well as a recurring role in the Amazon pilot, “People Just Do Nothing.” Goodman has also appeared as one of the leads in Fullscreen’s digital series, “Alive in Denver,” and can be seen in the independent features, “The Blackout,” “The Relationtrip,” Hulu’s “Plus One,” and Blue Fox’s “Papi Chulo,” alongside Matt Bomer and Wendi McLendon-Covey. When not acting in front of the camera, Goodman has also found success in the writers’ room. This year, Goodman joined the writing team for seasons four and five of Netflix’s smash-hit, animated comedy series, “Big Mouth.” “Big Mouth” is currently set to return for its fourth season on Netflix in 2020, following an unprecedented, three-season renewal announcement from the network. Born and raised in Queens, New York, Goodman discovered a love of acting throughout high school, before attending the Tisch School of Arts at New York University (NYU). Upon graduation from NYU, Goodman joined a musical sketch comedy group called “Political Subversities,” which featured weekly sketch and song performances by many NYU alumni about what was happening in the zeitgeist of pop-culture and politics and was even created into a web series. It wasn’t long before Goodman moved to LA full-time to pursue a career as both an actor and writer in Hollywood. As a proud, queer, Black person, Goodman has recently emerged as a staunch advocate for the #BlackLivesMatter movement, having gained over 20,000 followers and counting in the span of just a few days following a recent viral video message to Goodman’s white peers regarding his experience as a Black person in America. After the video message received over a million views and a handful of high-profile celebrity reposts, Goodman continues to actively speak out against the injustices that have been plaguing the Black community for decades, encouraging his followers to donate to the Innocence Projects, LA LGBT Center, Color of Change, and Black Lives Matter. RERUN | Bridget Regan: The Gift of Our Craft
For today’s episode, we’re sitting down with Bridget Regan, from Jane the Virgin, Agent Carter, The Last Ship, and the upcoming Paramount Network show, Paradise Lost, where she got to work with iconic artists like Barbara Hershey and Nick Nolte. She shares how she got her start doing community theatre while growing up just outside of San Diego, and how her experiences there lead her to a career performing on Broadway and in countless hit TV shows. We chat about some of her hilarious audition stories, what it was like working in the theatre and then transitioning to film, and how she’s always managed to trust her artistic instincts—even when they lead her against the advice of her team. We get into some great listener questions, where she offers her practical advice for the process, but as she shares, her “only real ritual is preparation.” It is this kind of investment in her craft that has led her to opportunities where she’s shot for 48 hours straight between TWO major TV shows. This deep desire to create connected work is why she’s never stopped working. Her credits also include roles in John Wick, Grey’s Anatomy, Sons of Anarchy, and White Collar. RERUN | Rebecca Hall: Tales from a Limitless Artist
Today’s guest has been around the arts her entire life. She is the acclaimed and generously creative British actor, writer, director and producer Rebecca Hall. Many of us first saw her in Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige and soon after starring in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Rebecca witnessed early on what an artist’s life could be. Her first on screen appearance was in the TV mini-series The Camomile Lawn at the age of 10. It was also around this time that her father (celebrated stage director Peter Hall) gave her some advice: the key to being an actor is making sure that you remember to live! She talks about her time at University and finding success on stage before appearing on screen again. After The Prestige, Rebecca continued on to a truly incredible career that’s lead to multiple awards and critical recognition. Her work includes The Red Riding Triology, The Town, Parade’s End, Iron Man 3, Transcendence The Awakening, Frost/Nixon, The Gift, Christine, and Tales from the Loop. Later this year you can watch her in Godzilla vs. Kong. She’s a master craftswoman. From sketching actors in the back of her father’s stage rehearsals to directing her own projects, you’ll hear the stories of how Rebecca pushes beyond expectations to create the art and life that she wants to express. For Rebecca, it all comes back to the work. For exclusive content surrounding this and all podcast episodes, sign up for our amazing newsletter at AlyshiaOchse.com.
