MONICA RAYMUND: You Can Shape A Choice, You Can’t Shape Nothing
Today’s special guest wears many hats. Actor, writer, producer, and former jazz band member Monica Raymund believes there is no right way to become an artist. Graduating from the Juilliard School class of 2008, Monica felt that her 4 years spent as a student allowed her the space to fully explore her instrument and break through her own inner blocks. After gaining representation through Juillard’s showcase, Monica shares that the determining factor in choosing her agent was the fact that her talent agent’s life didn’t revolve around the entertainment industry. With a lack of representation of Latina women on screen, Monica initially did not see television as an opportunity for her. Now, through the process of having grown comfortably into herself, Monica discusses how she now comfortably says “no” to projects that don't align with her values. Having spent 8 eight seasons as fan-favorite character, Gabriela Dawson, on NBC’s “Chicago Fire,” Monica shares the ways in which she was able to stay creatively fulfilled as an artist when not shooting the series. With a list of credits including “Chicago PD,” “Hightown,” “The Good Wife,” “Blue Bloods,” “Brahmin Bulls,” “Arbitrage” and many more, Monica is going full-steam ahead when it comes to work both in front of and behind the camera. Today, Monica opens up about her first major network test experience, how NBC’s Female Forward program helped launch her directing career, and how what’s going on off-screen in an actor’s self tape is what makes a compelling audition. These are the unforgettable stories that landed Monica Raymund right here. TAMARA TAYLOR: Law of Attraction - When You Don’t Desire Something Too Much, It Just Wants You
Today I sit down with star of the newly released “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” Tamara Taylor. As a shy kid, Tamara started out in modeling school. It was there where she discovered how she came alive on a runway performing in front of an audience. With dreams of pursuing acting, Tamara credits her mother with helping her to set her creative priorities on track when she asked, “Do you want to do this because you want to be famous, or do you want to do this because you like it?” After moving to Los Angeles with her best friend to pursue their entertainment industry dreams, Tamara studied with acting coaches Margie Haber and Howard Fine and describes her experience of first going out for commercial auditions. After landing a series of commercials as a spokesperson for AT&T, Tamara was able to launch her commercial success into securing theatrical agent representation. Since then, Tamara has earned a list of credits that just keeps growing including her well-known role as Dr. Camille Saroyan on FOX’s “Bones,” ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Netflix’s “Altered Carbon” and “October Faction,” FOX’s “Party of Five”, ABC’s “Lost”, Tyler Perry’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” and many more. Today, Tamara candidly and openly discusses both the challenges and excitements that await actors at every new level in their career, from new actor to series regular. She shares her journey towards developing and embracing her own self-confidence, and shares how that confidence has allowed her to recover gracefully from on-set blunders, to fully show up in auditions even when feeling nervous or unprepared, and most of all, to always listen to her gut. These are the unforgettable stories that landed Tamara Taylor right here. RUDI DHARMALINGAM: Go Beyond The Line Of Duty
Actor Rudi Dharmalingam showed a creative spark from a young age. From writing short stories and sketches with his two best friends while growing up, to attending the National Youth Theatre in the U.K. at the age of 16, Rudi excelled in his drama studies and had a fascination with performance. After graduating from the University of Salford, Rudi was ready to hit the ground running. He had his sights set on working as a professional actor in theater and had secured an agent during his first year at university. Today, Rudi shares the experience of being dropped by his agent after a terrifying accident on the way to his first audition and how he was able to push through the years of auditioning that followed. After booking an understudy role in the Royal National Theatre's London stage production of "The History Boys," Rudi began to see some momentum in his career. Since then, Rudi experienced a 15 year back-to-back run of theater productions including a West End run of "Mary Stuart," and a co-star role in "Hamlet" opposite Benedict Cumberbatch at the Barbican Theatre. After deciding that he was ready for a new adventure on the big screen, Rudi has now gracefully pivoted into the world of film and television with the premiere of Showtime's newest drama series, "Wakefield." Starring as psych ward nurse Nik Katira, this psychological drama explores the complexities of mental health when Nik himself begins to lose connection to his own reality. Rudi will also be returning in season 3 of "The Split," and can be seen in the upcoming 2022 release of the action-thriller series, "Extinction." Today, Rudi shares that what he loves most about acting is the intimacy. He dives into how that intimacy manifests itself differently in theater versus on screen, and he shares the ways in which he approaches character building from a place of instinct. Inspired by artistic legends such as Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, and following the teaching principles of Stanislavski, Rudi encourages all actors to think of a self-tape as a short film and to go above and beyond the line of duty when it comes to an audition. These are the unforgettable stories that landed Rudi Dharmalingam right here. RERUN | Sarah Shahi: Seeking the Highest Degree of Truth
Today’s guest is the gutsy and candid Sarah Shahi. You might recognize her as Jenny from Alias, Carmen on the L-Word, or the iconic Sameen Shaw on CBS’ Person of Interest. She’s a refreshingly honest and thus charming actress who makes no apologies for being herself. She discusses how befriending Robert Altman as an extra on his set inspired her to pursue an acting career and make the move from Texas to LA. She emphasizes the importance of being true to yourself in every way possible- for her, that means keeping her wardrobe casual and messy- even if it costs her the job. Sarah keeps it real, opening up about what it’s like to film sex scenes and even begin lactating mid-audition. Her career is an example of what can happen when you don’t plan your life around the work and instead trust that the net will catch you. BEN SCHNETZER: It's More Important To Be Excited Than It Is To Be Exciting
Born in New York, and having grown up with two actor parents, Ben Schnetzer never saw acting as any different from any other 9 to 5 job. Starting out in school plays, Ben recalls how his parents supported him from a young age and encouraged him to lead his own way when it came to his craft. Taking a year-long break after high school, Ben attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in the U.K. and recalls the obstacles he encountered during his early years of auditioning. Landing his first major series on ABC’s “Happy Town,” Ben shares the experience of his first screen test and how he eventually learned to overcome audition nerves. Since then, Ben has racked up a slew of credits in films such as “Snowden,” “Pride,” “Warcraft,” “The Book Thief,” “Goat,” “The Giant,” as well as a lead role in the newly released FX television drama series, “Y: The Last Man.” Today, Ben dives into the art of self tapes and how actors can use them to their advantage as the new auditioning norm during the pandemic. He offers tips on what is helpful for actors to look for when watching playback of their tapes, and what to refrain from agonizing over. Going even deeper, Ben offers insight into what it really means when casting says they know if you’re right for the role within the first 20 seconds of your tape. More than anything, Ben stresses the importance of taking the work seriously, rather than taking yourself too seriously. He reminds artists that our characters are a construct in another person’s story, and we can only control the level of work that we put into our craft and the rest is out of our hands. Ben knows what it means to be excited about the work, to fall in love with the journey, and reminds actors everywhere that there is value to be found in feeling lost from time to time.
