Episode 23: Doubt Yourself And Do It Anyway
Self-Doubt Sucks, Doesn't It?How often do you have an incredibly creative idea, something that excites you, only to convince yourself that it's not possible? I get it. I've been there. Hell, I fucking live there more often than not. I'm not sure that self-doubt, insecurity, impostor syndrome, etc., ever go away. I am sure that they become less paralyzing though. My coaching business, group practice, podcast, and entrepreneurial retreats, all have one thing in common.
Big Idea = Excitement!!!! HELL YES, THIS IS AMAZING.....AHHHHHHHH
Self Doubt = This is a great idea but not for you. This idea is better for people A, B, C,...
Bounce ideas off of colleagues, friends, and people I trust that are supportive
Decide to put the idea out to the world without an actual plan (Imperfect Action)
Make that shit happen!!!
Doubt Myself throughout the entirety of the process
Do IT ANYWAY!!!!
Put your idea out to the world, regardless of how scary and overwhelming it feels. You deserve to. Episode 22: Authenticity Is Courageous. Authenticity is Bold. [Featuring Katie Keates May]
In order to attract your "people," you need to be able to be BOLD and discuss the hard shit, not just glamorize the successes. It takes courage to be AUTHENTIC and to truly show up in your community.During this episode of The All Things Private Practice Podcast, I speak with Katie Keates May about the power of authenticity and being vulnerable.Katie is the owner and founder of Creative Healing, a group therapy practice focusing on DBT and supporting adolescents in the Philadelphia area, and Become A Group Guru, a business that helps mental health therapists successfully run and fill groups within their practices so they can make more $$ while working fewer hours.Katie and I share something in common in that we have never shied away from talking about our mental health or addiction struggles. We each believe that by being authentic we honor the values that are most important to us, as well as destigmatize mental health and substance use struggles.Being authentic isn't always easy. Our people-pleasing parts tend to show up and try and protect us from vulnerability, or suffering the slings and arrows so to speak, especially when we become more open to external judgment and criticism.Authenticity sometimes leads to losing people in your life. Those that you thought were in your corner can sometimes distance themselves or remove themselves because you're speaking your mind and showing up the way that matters most."Everything will line up perfectly when knowing and living the truth becomes more important than looking good." – Alan Cohen-------------------------------------------------------🎙️ Listen to more episodes of the All Things Private Practice Podcast here: www.allthingspractice.com/all-things-private-practice-podcast🎙️Spotify: atppod.com/spotify🎙️Apple Podcasts: atppod.com/apple🎙️Google Podcasts: atppod.com/google🗨️ Join the All Things Private Practice FB Community: www.facebook.com/groups/privatepracticebuilding----------------------------A Thanks to Our Sponsor!I would also like to thank CPH & Associates for sponsoring this episode. This episode of the all things private practice podcast is being brought to you by CPH & Associates. Episode 21: Autism Acceptance — Different Is Special
It's Autism Acceptance Month and I wanted to create a really vulnerable episode of the All Things Private Practice Podcast.I'm an Autistic Entrepreneur and Mental Health Therapist. It's been a pretty painful journey thus far, but learning how to embrace who I am and how I identify has been life-changing and transformative. When I was formally diagnosed (pathologizing is gross, btw), I had an intense grieving process — mainly because I felt so much sadness for my inner child, the part of me that wishes that I could have known sooner. It certainly made sense in regard to how challenging life has been relationally and in terms of connecting to others.I also felt tremendous validation and empowerment because now I knew what was going on. I learned that embracing one's own neurodivergence and "differences" can be a superpower. It doesn't take the pain away, the loneliness that exists, or the social awkwardness that I feel, but it certainly makes me feel better to know that my brain just works differently than those who are neurotypical.Different is beautiful and Different is unique. Different can also be painful. I hope that this episode helps those of you who can relate, and I hope that you know that you are valued, loved, and extraordinary.-------------------------------------------------------🎙️ Listen to more episodes of the All Things Private Practice Podcast here: www.allthingspractice.com/all-things-private-practice-podcast🎙️Spotify: atppod.com/spotify🎙️Apple Podcasts: atppod.com/apple🎙️Google Podcasts: atppod.com/google🗨️ Join the All Things Private Practice FB Community: www.facebook.com/groups/privatepracticebuilding----------------------------A Thanks to Our Sponsor!I would also like to thank Spruce Health for sponsoring this episode.Spruce Health is a HIPAA compliant app for phone, text, fax, and telehealth.Their customer service is fantastic, and their staff has the mission of not only making it easier on us as practitioners and practice owners but also easy for our clients to make sure that their communication is protected. Episode 20: If You Build It, They Will Come [Featuring Kathryn Esquer]
During this episode of the All Things Private Practice Podcast, I talk about networking, connection, and the importance of ongoing consultation. So often, as private practice and small business owners, we don't talk to anyone but our clients day in and day out. By the time the day is over, we don't have the capacity to think straight, let alone connect with friends, loved ones, or colleagues. Connection is so incredibly important as a small business owner. Especially during this new era of online entrepreneurship. Without it, we end up feeling isolated, lonely, and disconnected."Networking is not about just connecting people. It's about connecting people with people, people with ideas, and people with opportunities." -- Michele JennaeI talk with Kathryn Esquer, the owner of the Teletherapist Network. Kathryn is a Psychologist and MBA in rural Pennsylvania, and she created this online platform for therapists during COVID to combat her feelings of isolation and disconnection. The Teletherapist Network is not only a place to find connection and network with other therapists; it also offers case consultation for different topics throughout the mental health industry.I've been lucky enough to be a guest in several of the online training that Kathryn has hosted on business building, and she's truly developed something really extraordinary. You can join the Teletherapist Network and receive 50% off your first subscription (monthly, 3 months, or annual!) with code CASALE. https://teletherapistnetwork.com/-------------------------------------------------------🎙️ Listen to more episodes of the All Things Private Practice Podcast here: www.allthingspractice.com/all-things-private-practice-podcast🎙️Spotify: atppod.com/spotify🎙️Apple Podcasts: atppod.com/apple🎙️Google Podcasts: atppod.com/google🗨️ Join the All Things Private Practice FB Community: www.facebook.com/groups/privatepracticebuilding----------------------------A Thanks to Our Sponsor!I would also like to thank Embark EMR for sponsoring this episode.Try Embark EMR today with a free trial at embarkemr.com.You can also use code ATPP at checkout for 20% off an entire year of Embark.Mentioned in this episode:A Thanks to Our Sponsor, The Receptionist for iPad!Visit the website for The Receptionist for iPad here!

Episode 19: F*CK The Haters — Make Sure To Shake The RAS [Featuring Ernesto Segismundo]
Do you notice that the more you create, the more success you have, the more following you begin to develop, the more jealousy and insecurity it creates for other people in your circles? When you're talking about your wins, your achievements, the places you're traveling to, the lifestyle you're creating, the more people in your circles may start to judge or even resent you. You may start to get emails from people telling you that they'd like you to speak differently, curse less, or why they are unfollowing you. Ernesto and I talk about how he went from a young Filipino kid growing up in Hawaii, to building an empire in the entrepreneurial world. Ernesto talks about shaking the Reticular Activating System (RAS) to work through insecurities, impostor syndrome, stuckness, etc. We talk about our neurodivergence (ADHD), overcoming obstacles to create success, not giving up in the face of adversity, and how to handle the negative responses you may get as your brand and reputation grows. Ernesto talks about growing up with ADHD in a culture that had very high expectations for academia and his struggles to "fit into the mold."Ernesto is now a motivational speaker, owner of FYLMIT.COM (promotional videos for therapists), a group practice, conference host, entrepreneurial coach, and social media influencer.-------------------------------------------------------🎙️ Listen to more episodes of the All Things Private Practice Podcast here: www.allthingspractice.com/all-things-private-practice-podcast🎙️Spotify: atppod.com/spotify🎙️Apple Podcasts: atppod.com/apple🎙️Google Podcasts: atppod.com/google🗨️ Join the All Things Private Practice FB Community: www.facebook.com/groups/privatepracticebuilding----------------------------A Thanks to Our Sponsor!I would also like to thank Spruce Health for sponsoring this episode.Spruce Health is a HIPAA compliant app for phone, text, fax, and telehealth.Their customer service is fantastic, and their staff has the mission of not only making it easier on us as practitioners and practice owners but also easy for our clients to make sure that their communication is protected. Episode 18: Courage and Belief — Trusting It Will All Work Out [Featuring Marisol Colette A.K.A .The Fashion Therapist]
During this very powerful episode of the All Things Private Practice Podcast, I talk w/ Marisol Colette AKA The Fashion Therapist. Marisol is the owner of Sol Reflection, as well as the co-host of the Reading Aloud Podcast.Marisol's journey is one of courage, strength, resilience, and resolve. She was diagnosed w/ cancer immediately after leaving the VA (and their federal health insurance benefits) behind.Marisol and I talk about our journeys out of community mental health, and Marisol shares her story about leaving a "safe, secure" job at the VA that paid extraordinarily well and offered fantastic benefits but was emotionally and physically exhausting.Instead of panicking and going back to a job that was no longer satisfying, she trusted her judgment, intuition, and ingenuity, creating something very unique and unbelievably special within the therapy world. Marisol created her business and stepped into becoming a "fashion therapist." She incorporates trauma and body-based therapy to help people embrace their bodies and feel confident in their clothing — incredibly creative to say the least!Fashion Therapist? What does that even mean? How does that work?Marisol and I talk about her creative genius and process, as well as both of our determination to do things differently. Some topics include:
Thinking you can't make it or that your ideas are too "big"
The desire and determination to never go back to community mental health
Our success stories while doing things "differently"
Our struggles to get to where we're at

Episode 17: Not All Who Wander Are Lost — Becoming A Digital Nomad [Featuring Kym Tolson]
During this episode of the All Things Private Practice Podcast, I speak with Kym Tolson, owner of the Traveling Therapist and Insurance Billing For Telehealth Professionals.Travel and entrepreneurship often go hand-in-hand. Most of us start our own businesses to have more free time, flexibility, autonomy, and the ability to work from "anywhere."I love traveling, and it's a major reason that I decided that small business ownership was for me.Kym and I talk about:
How to start traveling more while maintaining your business
How I take 12-16 weeks off/year
Kym's journey into becoming a digital nomad
Billing insurance and requirements for out of state practice
Meet Kym Tolson, LCSW, CSAC:I'm a traveling therapist, working on living all throughout the country and working remotely. First stop: Hollywood, Florida, right outside Miami. Then COVID hit. Ugh. Everything shut down. We couldn't travel. Dreams on hold! Luckily, Miami is a pretty great place to be stuck during a pandemic.During the COVID lockdowns, I had a lot of time to work on my side-hustle, helping therapists learn how to bill insurance in their private practices.I still saw my clients, but I also continued to perfect my course, "DIY Insurance Billing for Private Practice."I also created a supportive membership, Bill Like A Boss, for therapists who are billing insurance in their private practices. Also, check out The Traveling Therapist Course.-------------------------------------------------------🎙️ Listen to more episodes of the All Things Private Practice Podcast here: www.allthingspractice.com/all-things-private-practice-podcast🎙️Spotify: atppod.com/spotify🎙️Apple Podcasts: atppod.com/apple🎙️Google Podcasts: atppod.com/google🗨️ Join the All Things Private Practice FB Community: www.facebook.com/groups/privatepracticebuilding----------------------------A Thanks to Our Sponsor!I would also like to thank Embark EMR for sponsoring this episode.Try Embark EMR today with a free trial at embarkemr.com.You can also use code ATPP at checkout for 20% off an entire year of Embark.Mentioned in this episode:A Thanks to Our Sponsor, The Receptionist for iPad!Visit the website for The Receptionist for iPad here!

Episode 16: Pink Hair, Who Cares? Be Authentically YOU! [Featuring Cindi Miller]
When you're able to be vulnerable, REAL, and authentic, you'll notice that life feels a HELL of a lot more energizing.AUTHENTICITY is what draws people to us, especially those that align with our values and the way that we show up in the world.People will want to work with you because of something you said, how BOLD you were, and how you stood out from the "play it safe, shows no personality, ruffles no feathers" types. On this episode of the All Things Private Practice Podcast, I talk with my friend and colleague, Cindi Miller, about why it's so important to show up as YOURSELF in your private practice and in your small business. We talk about:
Why it's so important to be authentically YOU in your business and personal life
Combatting negative beliefs that some therapists have about disclosure, authenticity, and being "real" human beings
Why it's OK to show off your tattoos, your pink hair, and your real personality
"We have to dare to be ourselves, however frightening or strange that self may prove to be." - May Sarton-------------------------------------------------------🎙️ Listen to more episodes of the All Things Private Practice Podcast here: www.allthingspractice.com/all-things-private-practice-podcast🎙️Spotify: atppod.com/spotify🎙️Apple Podcasts: atppod.com/apple🎙️Google Podcasts: atppod.com/google🗨️ Join the All Things Private Practice FB Community: www.facebook.com/groups/privatepracticebuilding----------------------------A Thanks to Our Sponsor!I would also like to thank Spruce Health for sponsoring this episode.Spruce Health is a HIPAA compliant app for phone, text, fax, and telehealth.Their customer service is fantastic, and their staff has the mission of not only making it easier on us as practitioners and practice owners but also easy for our clients to make sure that their communication is protected. Episode 15: Doing Things Differently — Pay What You Can [Featuring Tara Holmquist]
I'm sure most of you hear the phrases "charge your worth and scarcity mindset" all the time.Though I believe in getting paid for the hard work that we do, not all business models are the same.I talk with Tara Holmquist, a clinical psychologist in Wisconsin about her "pay what you can model" in private practice.Tara is an attachment-focused psychologist, meaning that everything is about the relationship and trusting the client's insight.Tara may be doing things differently than a lot of business owners and we discuss why this feels so unbelievably important for her. She believes that the client knows what works for them and that honoring this, it actually creates more trust and buy-in to the therapeutic process. We talk about the common misconceptions people may have about a business model like this including:
How do you set your fees?
Are you able to pay your bills?
How do you trust your clients to choose what they pay?
What made you decide to run your business like this?

As you prepare for the new year as a private practice owner, one area of your business where you might be able to level up your client experience is from the moment that they enter your office and check in with you. For many private practices, the client check-in process can be a bit awkward and confusing. Clients often enter into an empty waiting room. And chances are you're wrapping up a session with someone else, so there's no way of knowing when they arrive. With a visitor management system like The Receptionist for iPad, you can provide clients with a discreet and secure way to check in for their appointment while instantly being notified of their arrival. What's more, The Receptionist offers an iPad list check-in option where clients can scan a QR code to check in, which negates the need for you to buy an iPad and stand. Episode 14: Scared To Leave Your CMH Job? ME TOO!! [featuring Victoria Rodriguez]
Scared about leaving your Community Mental Health Job? I was too! I think we all are to some degree. It makes sense that when we feel comfortable and "secure," we struggle to embrace the fear of the unknown no matter how badly we want to.Community Mental Health definitely has a role to play but unfortunately, the system is broken, which means you end up struggling with: Resources, $$, time, and BURN OUT! In this episode, I talk with Victoria Rodriguez, a Ph.D. student at the University of New Orleans and owner of "My Car Is My Office," about the problems with Community Mental Health (CMH), but more importantly, how clients and therapists both suffer because of the systemic injustice and lack of resources.More about Victoria:Victoria Rodriguez (she/her/hers) provides professional consulting and program development services for community mental health agencies and provides telehealth counseling for individuals with health anxiety throughout Louisiana. As a Ph.D. student at the University of New Orleans, she has published research on barriers to treatment in community mental health and the theory-application gap in nonclinical settings. She is passionate about making community mental health sustainable for clinicians and participants.Find Victoria's research and other resources at mycarismyoffice.com and on social media at @my.car.is.my.office.-------------------------------------------------------🎙️ Listen to more episodes of the All Things Private Practice Podcast here: www.allthingspractice.com/all-things-private-practice-podcast🎙️Spotify: atppod.com/spotify🎙️Apple Podcasts: atppod.com/apple🎙️Google Podcasts: atppod.com/google🗨️ Join the All Things Private Practice FB Community: www.facebook.com/groups/privatepracticebuilding----------------------------A Thanks to Our Sponsor!I would also like to thank Embark EMR for sponsoring this episode.Try Embark EMR today with a free trial at embarkemr.com.You can also use code ATPP at checkout for 20% off an entire year of Embark.Mentioned in this episode:A Thanks to Our Sponsor, The Receptionist for iPad!Visit the website for The Receptionist for iPad here!
