Episode 220: Lifestyle Freedom and Liberty with Jack Spirko
Today we speak with one of my favorite people, a mentor and friend, Jack Spirko from The Survival Podcast about lifestyle freedom and liberty. I first found Jack years ago while canning tomatoes. I wanted something to listen to while doing this messy job that would not require me to restart the next podcast. I searched for a podcast on wild edible plants and found Jack and I was hooked. Since that time, I have watched in amazement as he manages to mentor hundreds of thousands of people as they develop lifestyle freedom, survival skills, cooking techniques and more - but we will dive more into that later in the show. Show Resources The Survival Podcast Live tracking for Kurt DarkHorse450 Fundraiser Main content of the show Jack Spirko is founder and podcaster at The Survival Podcast, a daily show about self sufficiency and self reliance in the modern world. He “conceived and created this podcast because over the years I have come to realize how fragile the human condition and the United States economy really is.” But the podcast is much more than a “prepper show.” Jack focuses on helping people develop stability, prosperity and lifestyle freedom into their lives. Before launching the podcast he had successful careers in sales and marketing, and business development. When Jack drops a piece of business advice, it is usually spot on. He lives in Texas on a small homestead with his Wife, Dorothy. Make it a great week! Episode 219: Flight for Combat Veterans
Today we have a quick update conversation with Kurt Dugger about his Dark Horse 450 flight (that is 450 miles) with a paramotor across Tennessee. Because the weather is so very important to flight success, Kurt has decided to start tonight in the hopes of beating the rains that may come toward the end of the weekend. This flight is to raise awareness of the issues facing combat veterans when they return and face the challenge of reintegrating into normal society and he is hoping to raise $6,000 for the Dark Horse Lodge so that they can get closer to completing their retreat for veterans and begin the hosting process. Direct Download When asked why the retreat is so important this morning in the Mewe chat, I handed the mic over to the Tactical Redneck because he is a returning combat veteran himself and know much more about this topic than I do. Here is what he said: "Most vets feel alone because they can't talk to other people about what they've been through. Speaking from experience, it's nowhere near as hard to talk to another vet." Then I was talking to Jack Spirko from The Survival Podcast this morning and he explained that his three years in the Army were all overseas so he found it really hard to do simple things, like stand in line at the grocery store because he had gotten very used to being mostly on very small and remote military bases. And as he tried harder to reintegrate, simple things began to make him feel angry so he took a long walk on the Appalachian Trail to get his mind back into the right place to be back home with his loved ones. Places like the Dark Horse Lodge are one way that space can be made for our returning combat veterans and that is why I made a donation to them today in support of both the lodge and of Kurt's flight (which is not costing the Lodge money). Would you like to help too? Here are some ways to do so: Follow Kurt's progress and meet him at one of his stops. He could use encouragement, and probably food and beverage though his wife is meeting him along the way as well. Flight Plan Live tracking (When a link is available I will put it here) Offer Lodging if he ends up overnighting near you (See resources above to track Kurt!) Raise awareness of his 450 mile paramotor flight, why places like the Dark Horse Lodge are so important, and how people can get involved Consider a donation Facebook campaign: https://www.facebook.com/donate/2343924885922771/536974993736779/ Direct donation to the Lodge: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?token=EYgEl_aDO4kgak8Ynvec7iMFqDDO0ONeOnGGK8TDZ15W-WVI82_zDYbTuSmPoAInAaytrW&country.x=US&locale.x= I will update this page as video/more information is released over the next few days and thanks for listening. Episode 218: Pantry Management 101
Someone asked me to elaborate on something that has always seemed simple to me: Load from the back and take from the front in your pantry. So I got to thinking: most of us are not taught how to manage our pantries and so when we talk about building food stability into your life through developing stores of foods that you actually want to eat, and learning food preservation, it is also worthwhile to discuss pantry management practices. Today, we will cover the 8 basic concepts to bring you to a well-managed pantry. Direct Download #HollerHatWednesday: Where is she and who is she with? Episode 215: An Early Fall Checklist
We are officially in fall. Another year has almost passed with its hope for a great harvest in the spring, wicked hot late summer days, and now, fall. So today, I wanted to share with you my early fall checklist on the homestead. #HollerHatWednesday: Where is she and who is she with? Listener Feedback from Jennifer What’s Up in the Garden We had a terrible infestation of cabbage worms (what we did about it) Fall lettuce is trying to bolt - will have a shade strategy in place for next year Main topic of the Show: An Early Fall Checklist Gardens Gather the antifreezing materials: plastic and bricks Stock tank heater Outside sheets Prepare the garlic bed Plant fall bulbs (tulips and daffodils, here we come!) Begin to mulch areas that are already done for the year (asparagus) Trim the eldreberries and mulberries (they are already dropping their leaves) Plan for any new fruit tree plantings Animals Updated food storage: more Ensure we have enough hay for the winter Test the water antifreezing systems Look at shelter and evaluate for winter Bedding Outdoor shelter for dogs and cats Humans Prepare for the fall root cellar move Review the freezer contents and look for food storage weaknesses Finish the rocket mass heater Review pipe anti-freezing technology Start winterizing the yard things Look the cars over for decent antifreeze, etc Power outtage kit review First aid/medicinal support review (flu, colds) Firewood Clean the chimney Order the broken stove baffle (OMG) Holiday travel and guest plans Review winter clothing status Really the only thing on this list that does not apply to a city fall check list would be the livestock list and if you have pets, it might well. I am often struck by how the lessons in developing my lifestyle freedom on a homestead apply to most other ways of living that a person might choose. Make it a great week! Episode 214: Daniel Allen of TinyGiantLife on Aircrete
It is Friday so we have an interview show and today, I talk with Daniel Allen about aircrete - an interesting, insulative and very flexible building material that you may want to consider for your next project. Resources Website: https://tinygiantlife.biz/ Video course YouTube channel Bio: Daniel Allen 30 years in the building Industry I took a job in I.T. and the company lost its big client to an Exxon buy out. The great recession hit and I could not find work without moving. So I cashed out my retirement, bought some land, build a small house and lived for a few years growing all my own food taking odd jobs. I started building alternative buildings and had the opportunity to build every type of alternative structure. Eventually I found AirCrete, or cellular cement as it's know in the industry. I fell in love with it. AirCrete let's a comfortable structure be build in any climate affordably with the enormous amounts of labors required by typical alternative construction or expensive machines. Throw some tools and cement in a truck and one person can build anywhere they can drive to. Now, I am starting a web based business teaching people how to build cheap beautiful debt free homes so that they can live an intentional life with or without a typical job. I offer digital video courses as well as workshops. Richard Hastings turned me onto your podcast. I did a podcast interview with the survival podcast and really licked the interaction.
