EP 90: Q1 2023 Business Valuation Market Data Insights

Welcome to the Defenders of Business Value Podcast with your host, Ed Mysogland. In this episode, we dive into the latest market multiples and their implications from DealStats. The 2Q 2023 issue highlights the trends and pricing multiples in Q1 2023, in addition to covering quarterly periods over the past five years and annual periods over the past ten years. Included is a highlight of the EBITDA multiple which shows a decrease in the 1Q 2023 multiple to 3.0x. The chart also highlights the median selling price/EBITDA with the trailing three-quarter average over five years. The summary of this episode was:  The median net sales multiple in the all-transactions category rose to 0.55x in 2021 and 0.58 in 2022 after being at 0.47x in 2020, the lowest value in the period analyzed. The following were the key take aways: Communicate your needs: Clearly articulate your specific requirements, such as industry preferences, desired location, investable funds, and desired business size.  Establish trust and rapport: Build a relationship based on trust, transparency, and open communication with your broker.  Provide feedback: Offer prompt and constructive feedback on potential opportunities. If it meets your acquisition criteria, explain why you are passing. Stay engaged and responsive. Ghosting is bad form. Network with the broker's connections. Working with me, you can access the people I work with regularly. This network effect will help you find deals faster. Be prepared and flexible: As a buyer, move swiftly when a promising opportunity arises. In this episode of the Defenders of Business Value Podcast, Chuck Post of PBI Laundry Consulting and author of THE LAUNDROMAT - An American Dream Business & An Entrepreneur's Playground, a seasoned entrepreneur with over 37 years of experience in the coin laundry business, shares his story. Chuck entered the laundry business in 1985 after an 11-year career in the bicycle industry. He was fascinated by the simplicity of the laundry business and saw enormous entrepreneurial opportunities in it. Chuck quickly found locations for new laundries to build out and worked with area realtors to establish relationships with established laundry owners. However, he found that most laundry owners had little or no intention of improving their businesses, which presented opportunities for Chuck to succeed in building the market by selling his laundries to new investors.  Over the years, Chuck has developed more than 30 new laundries, retooled and brokered hundreds, and built on spec and flipped dozens more. He is an active expert witness in cases where things do not work out and consults with other professionals that support the industry. Chuck has a General Contractors' License and has been a licensed Real Estate Broker for over 35 years. He is dedicated to the industry and the entrepreneurs who drive it, and has learned that understanding the science of the business is critical for success in the industry.
