41. Adamaris Mendoza - How to Accept the Now and Transform Your Life

“The ego uses the past to predict the future… By holding onto the past, you’re just creating the same pattern.”This episode’s guest didn’t think she’d make it to her 40s.Raised by immigrant parents, Adamaris was brought up with the belief that you have to work hard for everything. She was taught that no one was going to give her anything - she had to do it all herself. So that’s what she did.As a high achiever, Adamaris committed to the grind and tackled life the ‘world’s way’. She worked her way through the education system to ace college and get a masters degree before landing a corporate job in an investment bank. Then she worked and worked until she reached the point where her body couldn’t take it anymore. Thanks to severe adrenal exhaustion, Adamaris’s dream fell apart. Incapable of work she had no choice, but to quit her job. Suddenly, she was $50k in debt, living at home with her parents, and so broken her body couldn’t even digest foods - only liquids. It was an insane low that became the ‘gift’ which transformed Adamaris’s life.“Instead of feeling fear as something bad, I just shift it into WOW - some change is coming. I’m going to another level and getting new information.”When you’re at rock bottom, it can feel alien to surrender to the now - especially when hard work and hustle is all you know. But the truth is, we can’t do it all alone. It’s only when you surrender that you can activate the energetic source that created everything. As soon as Adamaris opened the door to help, she received it. This kick-started a healing and personal discovery that’s turned Adamaris into the coach and mentor she is today. In this incredible episode (which was recorded on Adamaris’ 44th birthday!) we dive deep into key concepts that catalyse growth and self-discovery. We discuss the power of fear before getting into an in-depth discussion about the role of the ego. Listen out for this topic - it’s going to help you understand why repeating patterns show up in your life.Adamaris’s story is typical of so many high-achievers who get seduced into the hustle. But as you’ll see, letting go is powerful too - if you want to create a life that’s extraordinary and deeply aligned with your true calling. I took a ton from this episode and I can’t wait to hear your takeaways.“Be open to the uncomfortableness.” Some questions I ask:Tell me about the severe illness you experienced that became the catalyst for where you are today. [38:50]If acceptance is the first step, how do you get better at accepting the circumstances in your life? [42:28]In the midst of everything you’ve been through, how do you stay grounded? 40. Marc Cordon - How to Turn Growing Pains into a Better Life

“There is no wrong way to live life.”I’m super pumped for episode 40. It’s another BIG milestone for the Stay Grounded podcast and we’ve got an incredible guest to mark this special occasion.Marc Cordon and I have similar roots. As second generation immigrants, we’ve both grown up as minorities trying to find our own version of the American dream. And it’s been one hell of a ride!As you’ll hear in this episode, Marc wasn’t always the approachable, compassionate guy you’ll hear today. He used to be ‘an angry Asian’ - desperate to not be Filipino so he could be like everyone else and fit it. But that wasn’t Marc’s destiny. In fact, standing out became the very thing that helped him achieve the success he enjoys today.Inspired by Michael Jackson, Marc is the coach that coaches the coaches. A positive psychology expert and the force behind Make Money Coaching Program, Marc’s mission is to empower people and have as much fun as possible. So settle in because you’re in for a treat! Along with some incredibly honest life advice, Marc dives into his story from former Asian band, to social justice campaigner, to highly sought after coach. I took a whole ton from this conversation and I know you will too.“Growth does have pain, but it also has an ecstacy part to it.”Another thing Marc and I have in common is our obsession with using fear as a positive force. In this episode, Marc shares some of the neuroscience and psychology that helps explains why fear shows up and how you can channel it. It’s a game-changer. As you’ll see, this all tracks back to our tribal roots. There’s a wake up call right there… because the voice that tells you that you can’t do something stems from just a tiny bundle of cells. The rest of your incredible brain isn’t being used. It’s why - as Marc says - positive psychology can only explain so much. The rest of it, you just gotta get out there and life your life. You’ve got to go with the ups, the downs, and the all arounds!P.S. Make sure you listen right to the end of this episode and you’ll discover how to grab a FREE copy of Marc’s upcoming book.“We are built to grow. We are not built to stay the same. We are built to evolve”Some questions I ask:How did you get into positive psychology? [4:29]How did you flip your us v them mentality to one that’s more inclusive and warm? [12:35]How does separating suffering from growing pains link back to finding your purpose? [17:14]If we’re meant to grow together, how does solo growth fit into the mix and what’s a good balance between the two? [20:15]How do you reframe loneliness and turn it into something you can positively use to find happiness and fulfillment? [24:30]How do you turn yourself into someone who’s never surprised by change so you can embrace change in your own life? [29:05]How do you build belief in your own life and how do you keep fostering that spirit so that you can continue moving forward as you evolve and grow? [31:42]How do you train yourself to savor moments? [38:50]Once you figured out the distinction between pain and suffering, did you ever have a point in your life when you got pulled back? [44:35]In the midst of everything you’ve gone through, how do you remember to stay grounded? [49:50]In this episode, you will hear about:What Marc saw was working and how that framed his future life. [6:24]How Marc got to play in the ‘best Asian band in the south.’ [8:38]‘What went wrong?” The song lyrics that summed up Marc’s life and helped him make a shift. [10:10]How Michael Jackson helped Marc figure out what he wanted to do. [11:05]Marc’s ‘weak minded view’ of social justice. [12:15]Why a conversation about a student’s best class made Marc so angry. [13:51]How Marc sees happiness - and the problem with goal setting. [15:23]The difference between loneliness and solitude - and why the difference matters. [21:05]Why you should feel the feels and why judgement is all part of that. [25:40]The sure-fire way of going to your deathbed with regrets. [28:00]Why we get scared by other people’s success. [30:30]Kaisan, the importance of 1%, and the value of micro moments. [36:28]How to proactively use pain to grow. [42:30]Why the Hero’s Journey is a spiral, NOT a cycle. 38. Darla LeDoux - The Courage to Do What You Love

“I became OK with failing - with the possibility that it might not work out. That was where the freedom came.” This episode’s guest and I have a lot in common. We both have corporate backgrounds in engineering (in fact, Darla calls herself a recovering engineer!) and we both experienced similar trigger moments that ‘forced’ us to take the leap out on our own. Now, Darla’s life couldn’t be more different! As a coach, she hosts intimate retreats that help people fast-track their learning and get out of their own way. So if there’s a part of you that’s not fully satisfied with the life you live right now, this episode is for you. Like me, Darla lived her life as convention tells us to do. She did all the right things, but life still slapped her in the face. But sometimes we need to be forced backwards before we can move forward again. So if you want to get unstuck, listen in as Darla dives deep into her own journey. Along the way, she reveals the hidden beliefs and experiences that are probably holding you back too. Many of which stretch all the way back to when you were just seven-years-old. (Listen out for our discussion around this critical age.) “We don’t know how much time we have, but I was living like at some point in the future the stars will align and I’ll be able to do my thing.” Darla’s passion is helping people be themselves so they can explore their own unique expression on this planet. Listen out for the reasons why Darla is so driven by this mission. When you understand the wider context of Darla’s work, you’ll see just how significant it really is. I took so much from this conversation and I know you will too. Whether you want to pocket a couple techniques to help you break free, get a deeper understanding of the stories that are driving your subconscious mind, or just be inspired by a ‘recovering engineer’ who now spends all her time doing what she loves, this is for you. So settle down and treat yourself to the genius that is Darla Le Doux. “I have so little drama in my life now because I make the decisions in advance, consciously rather than letting my subconscious take over and then having to pick up the pieces.” “What is this revealing to me?” “The more we can tune into how we’re feeling and share it, and let people know, the better.” “When you hear the opportunity to get in the door with someone, do it.” Some questions I ask: How did you finally make the jump into coaching and what was the trigger point that made it come alive for you. [4:06]How did you turn divorce and your stepdad's passing into fuel that helped you move forward? [9:33]How did moving through a divorce motivate you to do what you do now and show up as you show up now. [13:36]How has your relationship with pain changed over time? [17:40]How is your life’s purpose showing up through the work you do right now. [18:44]How does your ego line up with your subconscious and influence your day-to-day? [27:00]How do you help someone’s ego step aside because it knows you need it. [31:00]How do you rewrite your own story? [31:54]In the midst of everything you’ve achieved, how do you stay grounded. [48:16] In this episode, you will hear about: Darla’s 10 years in the self help aisle. [4:45]What gave Darla the urgency and perspective she needed to make her big life-changing decisions. [10:21]How ‘real stuff’ makes us present to life, purpose, and what we want to spend our time doing. [13:10]How divorce helped Darla become aware of the subconscious thoughts that were running the show - so she didn’t make the same choices again. [16:23]The question that Darla uses to reframe pain. [18:25]Why Darla is passionate about retreats and the power they have to help us grow. [19:50]Why a lack of connection and intimacy is the cause of the crises we have in the world right now. [21:00]How shifting your environment helps you expose the subconscious thoughts so you can see inside yourself. [22:14]Why the age of seven is such a critical age. [27:50]‘Be smart, get loved’ - how this story played out and ran Darla’s life. [29:00]Why you need to share and validate the parts of you that you hide before you can feel safe showing it to others. [35:02]The question to ask throughout the day to tune into your intuition and where you’re at. [36:47]How to use live events to create an environment that helps you grow. 37. Desiree & Alonto Mangadong - How to Move Through Emotions with Essential Oils

“We have a philosophy that all emotions are good. It’s about being able to move through those emotions that’s the key - so you can move from the negative to the positive.”This episode is a little bit special because I don’t have one guest, I have two! It’s power couple Desiree and Alonto Mangandog and they’re both passionate about using essential oils, aromatherapy, and acupuncture to help people process and move through their emotions. This episode blew my mind! When we live in our heads and we’re challenged by what Alonto referred to as ‘infobesity’, we can lose sense of the power our senses have to shake up our emotions.Desiree explains how 95% of everything that goes on happens in our subconscious - it’s no wonder it can be so hard to know ourselves - so we can grow and evolve into our potential. But as you’ll see in this episode, essential oils are a powerful tool that can unlock the door to heightened emotional awareness and maturity. That’s because the right oils used in the right situation can soften us, shift the flow of energy, and help us make sense of the way that we feel.“Aromatherapy helped me clear out the noise… So I can listen to myself and follow my truth.”This episode is fascinating - and profound.Make healing yourself a priority, and you inadvertently heal everyone around you. Maybe the most powerful things we can do as individuals is to open ourselves up so we can show up in the world from a place of abundance - instead of scarcity. That’s what essential oils can help you do.So if you struggle to manage and process your emotions. If you’re stuck in stories that disempower you. If you’re tied up in emotions connected to events that happened years - even decades ago - you’ll get a lot from this conversation.Oh and we talk about coffee too :)Coffee is a plant after all and as you’ll see it has some powerful properties that can unlock joy and influence who comes into our lives.I had no ideas how powerful essential oils could be until I heard Desiree and Alonto share their experiences and knowledge. Now I want to know more and more and I think you’ll feel the same. So brew yourself a cup of coffee and tune in. Give me an hour and I’ll give you a whole new perspective on emotional well-being.“The negative gives you the positive. You can’t have light if you don’t know darkness.”Some questions I ask:How did you guys meet? [1:04]How did you get into aromatherapy, essential oils, acupuncture, and emotional healing? [1:54]How can our emotional state be influenced by our senses? [6:31]How do you use aromatherapy to treat pain? [14:18]When using aromatherapy to heal, how much of the transition is due to the oil itself or your own reaction to the oil? [18:20]Give me a story about how aromatherapy and sensory awareness has helped you in your own life. [24:46]What’s the difference between noise and a negative emotion? [29:16]How have your emotions evolved over time as you’ve learned more about them? [33:15]How does emotional maturity tie back to happiness and fulfillment and how does this change over time? [38:52]In the midst of everything you’ve gone through, how do you stay grounded on a daily basis? [51:17]In this episode, you will hear about:The power of journaling to build your awareness and what to write about. [10:17]The three main ways that habits are developed. [11:10]How smell is able to create a vivid emotion and recall vivid memories. [12:30]How essential oils or plants pair with emotions to help transform how you feel. [15:24]Stranded on a desert island? Desiree would want this oil with her. [16:42]How bergamont brings about a shift in perspective to help boost your sense of hope (and why you can’t just take out emotions without replacing them with something else). [17:28]The aromatic benefits of coffee and its associated organs. [21:14]How taste affects our emotions. [23:14]‘Infobesity’ - and how oils can help you find the music and rhythm amongst the noise that you’re supposed to dance to. [28:23]Why all emotions are beautiful and how to gracefully move through emotions. [31:19]The importance of discernment and knowing when to say yes and no. [32:01]Why none of us are inherently lacking - instead, it’s just the stories we tell ourselves. [41:19]Why the subconscious mind makes it so hard for us to change. 36. Charlie Engle - How To Survive Anything

“Hardship is really what makes us who we are. It’s easy to be an optimist when things are going great, but who are you when things get really difficult?”Today’s guest is one of the most exciting people I’ve ever met. Ultrarunner, Charlie Engle was the first man to run across the Sahara Desert. He’s a real life action hero too - all documented in a documentary film produced and narrated by Matt Damon (yes, you read that right!)What I love about Charlie is his ability to take on and succeed at things which seem humanly impossible.Charlie is right at home when he’s neck deep in struggle. In fact, struggle has defined a whole chunk of his life. From crack cocaine and alcohol addiction, to a stay in federal prison, to the extreme feats of physical endurance, Charlie is proof you can survive anything. And that’s what we talk about in this episode. Why push yourself to the absolute limits? Why put yourself under so much pain? How do you move beyond exhaustion to achieve things most people can even imagine (wait until you hear about the next ‘crazy’ adventure Charlie’s planning!)So brew a cup and listen to an inspiring story of hope about a man will just will NOT give up.“We spend a whole lot of time worrying about things that are out in the future and out of our control when what we should be doing is focusing on exactly what’s right in front of us.”“It just doesn’t matter what happens to us. It only matters what you do about it. You get a chance to respond in some way to everything that happens to you.”I’ve got to be honest, I seriously loved talking with Charlie. I come from a similar mindset - that struggle can be transformative and that you can grow and discover more about the person you are as a result of intense challenge. It’s like Charlie said, anytime you purposely put yourself into a challenging situation you always learn something from it.Often we choose the comfortable path through life (perhaps unknowingly). But I agree with Charlie. “Comfort is overrated” and “comfort as a goal is very unfulfilling.” In Charlie’s words, “I’m not on this planet to have an easy experience. I’m here to do as many things as I can.”So if you’re curious about the mindset and philosophies of a man who’s more comfortable in struggle than out of it, you’re in for a treat. And if Charlie’s story inspires you to take on a feat of your own, I’d love to hear about it.“Measuring success for me is finding a way to be OK with unresolved conflicts.”“Continuous forward movement pretty much always wins the day. You don’t have to be awesome all the time. You just have to not give up.”Some questions I ask:Can you share with us why you started running and why you choose this over everything else? [4:16]What motivates you to chase the emotional rewards you get when you finish one of your incredible feats? [7:03]What are the similarities between running across the Sahara and overcoming addiction? [9:18]You seem to be using struggle to take care of yourself. How do you think struggle and self care go hand in hand? [14:51]Why do you think it’s so hard for people to live a life with passion? [18:49]How has going through addiction shaped your definition of success? [21:51]How do you balance expecting life to be hard with enjoying the fruits of your successes? [24:07]What is the most important lesson you’ve learned that reinforces your own philosophy on life? [27:24]Dead Sea to the top of Everest. What’s motivating you to do this trip at this time? [30:40]How do you reframe challenges to make them seem practical? Is it a skill or experience? [35:36]How does resilience differ when the pain is someone else’s? [40:33]In the midst of everything you’ve been through, how do you stay grounded on a daily basis? [47:00]In this episode, you will hear about:Emotional rewards and what running did to help Charlie turn his life around. [6:40]One step at a time mantra and how this connects crossing the Sahara and overcoming addiction. [9:41]How to approach first time experiences (which we spend our lives chasing) so they bring possibilities instead of anxieties. [13:45]The question that left Charlie speechless and why one of his challenges is to be happy and comfortable when things are ‘ok’. [16:30]Why comfort is underrated. [17:20]‘We compare our insides with other people’s outsides.” - why this can shut down passion and affect how we feel. [19:55]Why you have to be comfortable with unresolved conflicts. [23:00]Why you don’t have to be perfectly prepared to take on the things you’re planning. [29:00]5.8 - Charlie’s lowest to highest challenge, a metaphor for life, and being good stewards for the planet. [31:51]Charlie’s favorite saying in the world and what it tells us about struggle, resilience, and opportunity. [37:20]The most important word in the universe. 35. Logan Christopher - The Strongman

“I like to see that what you do in the gym as lab for the rest of your life.” Today’s guest was not naturally athletic. As a teenager, he was thin - scrawny even. Not the pillar of strength looking back at me through Zoom. But such is the power of goals. After reading the biography of a strongman, Logan wanted to perform at a super high level too. He wanted to accomplish feats of strength that most people could only dream about! And that’s been his focus since the age of 18 - with incredible results. That’s because just like the strongman who inspired him to step up, Logan can also pull an antique fire truck with his hair! So check out this episode and discover how he did it. But fair warning! Discussing what it takes to build strength on this scale only scratches the surface of what we spoke about... “Look at what is good for you but in a multi-level type of way… What’s good for you today, a week from now, a month from now, a year from now, a decade from now, or over the course of your lifetime. If you can have real alignment in those as far as your purpose, then you’re going to basically achieve that purpose or great things. ” You see, Logan has had one heck of a story! From intense loneliness at school, to losing his mom to cancer, to being called by nature to write a book, this conversation went on twists and turns I didn’t expect. Although Logan’s ‘home base’ is strength training, his life is far from one-dimensional. Instead, Logan’s curiosity and desire to learn and make an impact has taken him down many paths. From NLP training to an ayahuasca experience in the Amazon jungle, Logan is constantly pushing his boundaries through knowledge so he can uplevel all areas of his life. He’s a person driven by a holistic approach to life - passionate to reconnect with nature through the power of herbs. It’s one of the many things that makes Logan so fascinating. So buckle up and listen in. This is one incredible conversation that’s guaranteed to take you to places you didn’t expect. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. “Struggle and stress are good things when done in the right amount.” Some questions I ask: Why strength training and how has your passion grown the more you’ve done it? 33. Julian Colker - Do Less, Be More

“Self care is mandatory… If you think you’re going to be at your highest performance without self care, you’re fooling yourself.” I first met today’s guest in New York at an entrepreneurial event we both attended. There was something about Julian! He had a vibe that made me feel good and made me want to be around him. And I wasn’t alone. I noticed how others had the same experience. When I asked Julian what was going on, he said it was because we had connected to his ‘inner god’ and that he was actively looking for the god in each person he encountered. We didn’t have time to go into the detail of what this meant, but I was hooked and super curious. I had to know more! So I invited Julian onto the Stay Grounded podcast so we could dig deeper into this concept. And the depth of insight this discussion unleashed blew me away - and I’m pretty sure it will be the same for you too. “By me witnessing the god in others I’m calling them up to the vibrational level of their god-selves.” In this episode we talk about all sorts of cool stuff - all around how you can be your best self. What this means in practice. What inspires you to show up as your best. The simple daily practices you can engage in to really life life to the full. Julian really does hold nothing back. As you’ll hear, he gives my questions careful consideration and as a result we went to some super interesting places. Such as a definition of meditation that everyone can connect with (even if you can’t sit still for a minute on the cushion!) And Julian’s 3-minute, daily sex practice that’s not only created more love and connection with his wife Marla, but bleeds into everything else that he does. And perhaps my favorite comment of all. Listen out for when Julian tells me to, “Just be Raj. You don’t have to be anything. Just be Raj.” [And of course insert your name as he says it.] This episode left me super inspired in so many ways and it’s my hope that it will do the same for you too. So brew yourself a coffee, pull up a chair, and get ready to indulge yourself in a beautiful dose of life wisdom - courtesy of my friend, the extraordinary Julian Colker. “The things you don’t want are opportunities for growth, opportunities to learn, and opportunities to get curious.” Some questions I ask: What does feeling your inner god mean to you? [1:20]What does vibrational level mean? [6:29]When you’re in a low vibrational state how do you train yourself to start appreciating and seeing the joy all around you. [9:04]What is meditation to you? [16:20]How do you make self care a priority each day? [20:49]How does your daily sex practice bleed into everything else that you do? [22:52]What’s the difference between your divine self and your ego driven self? [23:40]How do you become comfortable spreading your joy when you’re in your divine state? [27:00]If you’ve never consciously tried to be your best self, how do you bridge the gap between your conscious and unconscious so that you know what your best self is - and can therefore show up as it?When all else fails, what is the one non-negotiable that brings you back to center and your divine self? [33:35]What role does gratitude play in your life? [36:12]How do you stay grounded? [43:46] In this episode, you will hear about: Beware of your small self and how to know when it shows up! [2:06]The book that literally jumped into Julian’s hand when he was in a bookshop. [3:00]The prayer you can say to connect with your god-self - and the flip that enables you to see god in others too. [10:20]Why doing is amazing - and what’s beyond that. [12:27]Why breathing is the bridge between the seen and the unseen world. [15:30]Why self care is mandatory. [20:27]“Everybody’s got 3-minutes” - Julian’s daily sex practice and how this helps him feel more connected throughout the day. [21:36]The role your ego needs to play in your life. [24:36]Why we’ve got to have moments that are ‘sh*t’ and why the things you don’t want are actually the gifts in life. [35:40]Julian’s gratitude for food and how it makes every meal taste better. [37:00]The importance of ‘advanced gratitude’. [37:37]The fear/imagination game that Julian likes to play. 32. John 'Izzy' Israel - 1825 Thank You Cards

“Writing thank you cards for me is my canvas. It’s the manner in which I express myself to the world about how I feel.” As the owner of a gifting company, today’s guest felt his was living out of alignment. Gifting involves expressing your love and appreciation to the people you care about, yet John didn’t feel this value featured highly enough in his life. Something had to change - so John committed to send FIVE handwritten thank you cards every day for one year. The Mr Thank You Project was born. But what started as a challenge quickly morphed into an incredible journey of self-expression, personal growth, and deepening relationships. When you think about thank you cards, you traditionally imagine obligatory notes sent after receiving a gift. But John knew those letters would get dry and boring pretty soon! So he decided to write cards that truly appreciated someone for who they are and what they’d done for him. It was a decision that forced John to be vulnerable and put his heart on the line, but the results - as you’ll see in this episode - were life-changing. “I became hyper aware of my emotional state everyday – because if you have to sit down and write someone a thank you card you can’t be in a lame, negative, upset attitude. Well you can, but it’s not going to be very good card!” In this episode John reveals the nitty gritty about what happened during his one-year Mr Thank You project. He tells some incredible stories of compassion, appreciation, and love for the most unlikely people who changed his life as he touched theirs. I promise, John will transform the way you look at thank you cards. This episode exposes their true power not only to transform your relationships, but also influence the core of who you are and how you show up in the world. Fair warning! Don’t be surprised if you get an urge to rush to the nearest store after this episode to buy a pack of cards. There’s something about John’s story that compels you to want to start writing notes of your own :) And that is John’s mission. Through the Mr Thank You Project, John is determined to elevate the level of gratitude in the world by 1% by inspiring people to write 74 million thank you letters. So grab your cup and get ready for a masterclass as I hand you over to the inspirational, Mr Thank You himself - John ‘Izzy’ Israel. “Curiosity is the birthplace of appreciation and appreciation is the start point of empathy. When we have empathy, we can develop compassion and when we have compassion we can literally connect with anybody.” Some questions I ask: How do you define gratitude and why you think it’s so important to exercise it on a daily basis. [4:15]How did you cultivate the skill of being grateful for the struggles as well as the good stuff? [4:00]What drove you to write thank you letters and why did you choose to write five a day? [15:30]How did you own ability to be empathetic change over the course of this year? [23:17]How has your perspective of what’s really important changed over time? [30:40]Are you at peace with who you are because of this challenge? [34:35]How do you stay grounded on a daily basis?
