28. Jon Vroman - The Art of Moment Making
“Our whole lives are made up of moments… How we approach the here and now ultimately writes the stories of our lives.” Ever felt as though you’re missing out on life as it happens? It’s a common concern. When you’re juggling a ton of responsibilities (and a to-do list that never ends) your head and body aren’t in the same place! And when you’re chasing the future and rushing over the here and now, you end up missing out on a lot. It’s why I was so excited to chat with Jon in this episode. Jon is on a mission to show people how to live life in the front row - and his tool of choice is moment making. It’s a mindset I totally buy into. I used to focus on the grind. I used to constantly chase the next promotion or the next big goal because I believed that’s what would make me feel successful. But I soon discovered this mindset puts you in a game you’ll never win. That’s because life isn’t a journey. Instead, it’s a series of here and now moments. And my guest today reveals how to grasp that profound insight and use it to create the life you want. “Personal growth isn’t always about learning something new, it’s often about remembering something true.” Jon Vroman is an award-winning speaker who’s given more than 750 keynote presentations for many companies, organizations, universities, and associations. He’s also the #1 bestselling author of The Front Row Factor. Transform Your Life with The Art of Moment Making. Jon is a real authority on this important approach to living so I was grateful to find out more about his ‘rituals, routines, and rhythms’. We cover a lot of ground in this episode. From the lessons you can learn from people battling life-threatening illnesses to tangible strategies that put you in the front row, this conversation gets profound. So tune in now and learn how you can master the art of moment making in episode #29. “I have learned so much about living lifefrom people who are fighting for it.” Some questions I ask:How do you define ‘moment making’. (1:14)How has your awareness of the power of moments allowed you to create more moments that matter? (3:52)When joining up the dots, how do you process a backstory of extraordinary pain and shift your mindset to look for growth and meaning. 27. Michael O'Neal - 75 and Sunny
“When something feels like it’s holding you back, my default is to say YES to everything.” In this episode, I get to have a deep dive conversation with someone who knows a thing or two about podcasting! It’s Michael O’Neal, host of the Soulpreneur podcast which has racked up a staggering 681 shows. Mike is an outstanding podcaster and he shared a few insider secrets with me in this show - so if you’re a podcaster too, you’re going to love this one. But I didn’t ask Mike on to talk about his skills! While we do discuss the power of storytelling and interviewing, I wanted to dig into the inspirational story that’s taken him to where he is today. It started back in 2006 when Mike lost both his parents in less than 12 months. Despite achieving a level of success, medical bills soon hemorrhaged his life meaning he was effectively starting from scratch. And that’s when he went to Europe. “Success recognizes hustle.” Mike’s story is about creating your own luck - despite tragedy and troubles. It’s about being 75 and sunny in all areas of his life. And finding a way to build your life around the things you enjoy. Mike is proof that you always have a choice - and that the choices you make in any given circumstances determine the experiences you have. So if you feel as though life is against you right now, take a listen to Mike. You’ll discover how unexpected meetings, events, and situations when you’re down can transform your life in ways you couldn’t imagine. “For anyone that’s in a situation now where it feels terrible and that life is against them… there are numerous people that have had the exact same situation and ended up having the most amazing life.” Some questions I ask:What inspired your trip to Europe? (2:28)Was the message you received something you were actively looking for or did it come out of the blue? (11:49)How do you keep yourself going? (16:44)How long did it take for your strategy to deliver a break? (21:27)How did you train your brain to be able to think at the next level? (23:39)What is your daily routine like and what do you do to keep yourself motivated? (24:48)How do you design your life around your hobbies? How does this work? (28:57)What are the buckets of your life that you try to be ‘75 and sunny’ in? (31:59)In what way did your relationship with money change when you came back from Europe? (37:09)Watch stories and why they’re important to Mike. (38:53)Tell us about your podcast and your show. (41:37)In the midst of all your success, how do you stay grounded. (51:17) In this episode, you will hear about: What caused Mike’s life to hemorrhage in the space of 12 months. (3:17)The meeting with the white-haired guy who was photographed with 5 US presidents - and the life-changing conversation he had with Mike. (17:47)The reason Mike figured out the answer to, “What are you doing here?” (20:18)Mike’s typical day - and why it includes ‘transformative’ pushups. 25. Karen Briscoe - 5 Minute Success
“I had this epiphany… The only thing stopping me from doing it was me.” Can you really achieve success in just 5 minutes? This episode’s guest believes so. If success is the result of habits practiced consistently, commit to the right actions for 5 minutes a day and you can see massive results. Karen Briscoe honed these skills in her hugely successful real estate business, but it was an epiphany moment that inspired her to consolidate her practices into a formula that other people could follow. After having the idea to write a book, Karen realized she needed to adopt new rituals to help her push through the doubt, fear, and questioning that can hold us back from doing the things we love. So she grabbed the opportunity one October day when the clocks went back to get up an hour earlier - and she did this every day to give herself the time to write. “I think people sometimes think it’s the big things that are what makes life meaningful, but many times it’s the daily rituals and relationships where true meaning comes from.” This episode is chock-full of practical ideas and strategies that will help you leverage habits to achieve the things you want. We also talk about the role of inspiration and why you must act fast - before the opportunity is passed to someone else. This conversation was so helpful and enriching. They say that success leaves clues and Karen leaves so many on this episode. So if you’ve been struggling to get things to work in your life, take a listen to Karen. Everyone can do something for five minutes a day that will propel them forward, right? And in this episode, you’ll get clarity on the steps you could take to achieve your own 5 minute success. “If you’re reaching for what your highest and best potential is that is an ongoing striving… I don’t think there’s an arriving. The striving is part of the thriving.” Some questions I ask:Tell us your story and how it led to 5 Minute Success (0.38).What is the one thing you recommend people do every day and why do you suggest that people attach this to their existing rituals. (6:30)When you were deciding to write your book, what were some of the things you did to get the rocket ship off the ground and push through the limiting beliefs? (10:25)You talked about how you used accountability to help you get started. What else did you do to keep you going in the early days - when you were questioning your plans and feeling the doubts? (15:12)You’d already been successful in real estate. Why did you feel that you needed a different mindset to be successful as an author? (18:50)When you have a stroke of genius, how do you use the fear in a constructive way so you can challenge the doubting thoughts and still move forward? (28:17)What are some things you do every day to practice the muscle of action despite fear? (31:27)Is happiness in your daily routines? 23. Matt Aitchison - Finding Your Organic Self
“My routine is my awareness tool. My tracking tool to tell me when I’m on track, when I’m off track, when do I need to course correct, and when I need to double-down.” My guest today has flipped over 150 houses in the last six years. He’s Matt Aitchison, creator of 6FigureFlipper.com and an individual who has a unique and inspiring approach to happiness. Matt’s goal is to be a millionaire in ALL areas of his life. Passionate about showing up as his ‘organic self’ consistently in all 8 of his ‘life gardens’, Matt’s attention to detail and ‘small bet’ testing mentality is an inspiration. Thanks to his daily routines and methodical tracking, Matt has developed an intense level of self awareness, which helps him know when to course correct, double down, or change tact. It’s an approach that’s brought him wealth in business, health, relationships, and financially - and a methodology that he shares in this powerful episode. What you’re doing right now - in this exact moment - was once a stretch for you mentally and physically, but you figured out a way to normalize it. It’s just what you do now.” Matt wasn’t always this focused and dedicated to his path. In fact, it took a nosedive to rock bottom after a college arrest for a physical altercation. This was the wake-up call he needed to start designing the life his organic self craved. For the last 10 years, Matt has been dedicated to 2.0 himself. Fuelled by a belief that what seems scary can become his new reality, Matt leverages his all in, all out personality to live a full on life. So if you want hacks and strategies that will help step into your ‘organic self’, this episode is a must watch. I promise, it’s a doozy! “I’ve always believed that we grow into the conversations around us. If you want to be a millionaire, go hang out with nine other millionaires and most likely you’re going to adopt the mentality, the disciplines, the habits, the network, the research - all the information that will empower you to be on that path as well.” Some questions I ask:Tell me about your story and your transformation in your own words (0:56)When you realised in college that you had to make some serious changes, how did you make that party happen? What was the first sprint like after you decided to get started? (9:33)How does your daily routine keep the party going down the path you’ve chosen. (17:15)How did you come up with your core values and what are some of the non-negotiables on your routine list? (22:42)You say you want to be a whole-life millionaire. How does your mission, vision, and values help you find balance? (29:00)How does gratitude feature in your life? (36:55)Tell me more about Six-Figure Flipper. (39:55)In the midst of everything you’ve accomplished, how do you stay grounded on a daily basis? (44:29) In this episode, you will hear about: How an altercation at school turned Matt’s life upside down and taught him that actions create consequences. (3:33)Why a college arrest and brutal reality check taught him that your past doesn’t need to equal your future. (5:33)How Matt got interested in real estate entrepreneurship. 22. Dana Malstaff - Pursue Your Passion. Include Your Kids.
“Doing your thing is massively important to raising good kids. We should be able to show our kids that doing what we love is financially viable. I don’t want work to be a negative word. I don’t want kids to grow up and think they have to get a job to make money to have enough money to do the thing they love.” This podcast episode is one of my favorite yet. I can’t tell you how much I LOVED interviewing ‘Dana Banana’ - a Boss Mom herself and founder of the incredible Boss Mom community that’s helped over 50,000 women in the last 2.5 years. Like me, Dana comes from a corporate background. But everything changed when she realized that it wasn’t her job she was in love with - but her thirst for accomplishment. This insight inspired her to quit her six-figure (plus) salary to become an entrepreneur - at the same time as having her first child! “Our lives are basically just a series of decisions that we make every day - some conscious and some unconscious.” Dana is proof that parenthood doesn’t need to change your personal ambitions for life, work, and yourself. Instead, as you’ll discover in this week’s podcast, life-changing situations can in fact inspire the life-changing decisions that push you in the direction you truly desire. In this episode, Dana gets up close and personal. Discussing everything from the drunken night that changed everything to the reason why shaving her legs is a daily non-negotiable. But beyond the banter is some incredible insights that could truly change your life. For example, how Dana supports herself to make the right decisions - so she can be effective as a business owner, a mom, and a human. So if you’re a mom who’s looking for support, ideas, and a like-minded community to help you take your business to the next level, then this episode is for you. And it’s equally for you if you want to see how one woman juggles multiple demanding roles and comes out on top. Enjoy :-) “There are so many correlations - raising a business is just like raising a child!” Some questions I ask:Tell us about your journey. How did the BossMom movement start and come to life. (3:22)How do you navigate the uncertainty and discomfort of making difficult decisions when you’re going through life-changing decisions? (10:20)What does your daily routine look like? 21. Frost Fassett - 365 Days. 365 Communities. 365 Conversations.
“If you want to live a full life, you’ve got to throw your routine out the window sometimes and just be willing to take a ride on what the universe has to offer you.” This episode’s guest uses Facebook for a very different reason than most. Instead of getting lost in the timeline, Frost Fassett scrolled through the 100 plus events in his local area to pinpoint ONE to attend. Then he did this EVERY SINGLE DAY for an entire year. That’s 365 events in 365 different communities so he could have ONE profound conversation and learn something new every single day in 2017. His DICE (Daily Inspiring Community Events) Project took him across America and overseas and gave him a unique insight into people and communities from all walks of life. It’s totally fascinating and something we discuss at length in this episode. “Community events are the social fabric of America. If we can have more community events we can have more real-world, face-to-face conversation with people shaking hands, then that is what is going to truly impact our nation. That is what is going to evolve our democracy.” Frost believes that while we’re more connected than ever, we’re more isolated and alone than ever. What’s more, the information silos we live in is leading to more polarisation as people don’t get to interact with perspectives and ideas that don’t align with their own beliefs. He wanted to push back against this trend and get stuck into real-life conversations with real people doing good in their communities. This experienced shaped and influenced Frost and he reveals all in this fascinating interview. So whether you’re curious as to how one man can pack so much in or you’re interested to explore a simple idea that could inject more adventure, curiosity, and connection into your life, this episode is for you. Because as Frost discovered, there is a superpower in community connections and when you have that sense of belonging somewhere, something beautiful and new can open up for your life. Over to Frost... “Life is not static… We have a past and we have a future… Life it’s a work in progress… Where I’ve got to go has got to be a constant re-evaluation of where I’m at right now.” Some questions I ask:Tell us about your incredible 2017. (3:47)How was it travelling 90 minutes to get to a different location to get to an event? (12:35)A lot of people aren’t putting in the work to find fulfilment and to be happy. What do you have to say about that? (13:40)What are some of the biggest things that you learned during the year? What are some of the positives? What are you taking with you and what are you leaving behind? (20:33)From a year of meeting so many people, how has that changed you as a person. How has that changed how you interact with others and build relationships? (26:42)How did you find the middle ground so you could make connections when going to different communities and meeting different people? (31:07)I believe there are fundamental things that humans can connect on, regardless of who we are. How did universal principles factor into your conversations to help you find common ground? (33:21)What mindset did you take to these events? For example, did you rely on any rituals to foster a sense of positivity? (38:32)Where did the best conversations come from? (45:16)How do you stay grounded everyday? (50:37) In this episode, you will hear about:The 10k near-death experience in 2014 that jilted Frost and forced him to reassess what he wanted to do for his life and the impact he wanted to make. (4:08)How Frost emerged with a new community mantra for life - and how it was influenced by polarized events. (5:02)How conversations can change the world and the framework that can make that a reality. (7:39)The community party event attended by 700 people that kicked off Frost’s mission with a ton of media coverage. (7:52)How a book idea and his first event triggered Frost’s decision to proactively live his mantra daily through DICE (9:20)What is DICE and how it defined a year of Frost’s life. (9:40)The Facebook ‘thing’ Frost believes he is onto. (11:22)The thought process that morphed DICE from a one-off decision to an annual project. (15:01)The two motivations that kept Frost going for an entire year. (15:47)The most uncomfortable conversation Frost had during his DICE project that turned into an inspiring, profound experience. (22:53)The importance of finding common ground when meeting new people to create space for conversation and rapport. (35:35)Why Frost poured his heart out in a bowling alley to secure his project. (39:47)Frost’s passion for bigger businesses to get engaged with community events. (44:20)Frost’s path in the universe and why he believes we all have one. 19. Shannon Miles - Taking Ownership Of Your Life
“You can have it all. You simply have to know what ALL is for you.” The surname Miles may be familiar, and because Shannon’s husband, Bryan was my guest in episode 11. Shannon and Bryan co-founded Belay Solutions seven years ago. It’s a virtual company that offers self-motivated people the chance to create work (and life) on their terms. Shannon is an amazing role model and an inspiring leader. Working alongside Bryan, she’s built an incredible company, raised two beautiful kids, and has mastered her schedule so she can live life on her terms. And in this podcast episode we dig into the thinking, mindset shifts, and decisions that enabled her to do that. “The Third Option is about doing your work, but also allowing you to prioritize your family and your personal life in a way that you can’t in a traditional office environment.” In this episode Shannon shares how her own life and upbringing became the triggers that inspired her to ‘never settle’. She also reveals the backstory behind Belay and how an accidental, part-time gig at a job she loved became the entire foundation for the company she now runs with Bryan. We also get deep into the power of gratitude and how it’s become an intentional tool that allows her to motivate herself and her team, and inspire her children. I loved chatting with Shannon. I love her passion for service and her commitment to inspire others to create a life that works for them - because she knows it’s possible. So if you’re feeling frustrated that work has resulted in far too many compromises for you, listen into Shannon’s episode and discover more about an option that many people don’t realize exist, but one which could be perfect for you. “Gratitude is mindfulness taking action.” Some questions I ask:You work with your husband. How was it deciding roles and figuring out how to make everything work with your own lives? (2:50)How do you start your day? What routines or practices do you follow to keep yourself rocking and rolling? (4:37)Tell us more about the story behind your new book. (14:40)What is the Third Option? (18:49)How do you rewire your brain to make the 3rd choice feel possible - that you really can have everything you want? (21:08)How hard was it to start working virtually? How did you motivate yourself? (24:20)How do you balance work-related with your personal goals? (29:40)What do you think about sharing your intentions with others. How does that work as a practice? (33:20)How did you develop such a sense of ownership for your own life? (36:29)How do you stay grounded on a daily basis? (42:55) In this episode, you will hear about: How Shannon started out with Belay. (0:56)The critical role gratitude plays in Shannon’s life - and the practice she pairs with it to help frame her day. (7:07)The 2-minute team email that transformed a stressful situation and showed leadership from Shannon. (37:11)Shannon’s tip for not taking on other people’s challenges - so they can own them instead.
