TLS #139 with Dana Shultz: Personal Struggles & Connecting to Your Intuition

Today’s Lively Show is with a beloved returning guest, Dana Shultz, of Minimalist Baker. In today’s show, we’re discussing an unknown, ongoing health issue that has led to Dana losing about 50% of her hair over the past year and a half and triggered a host of life lessons along the way. The doubts, vulnerability, and concerns Dana discusses are ones that many of us can relate to in various aspects of our lives – aging, illness, weight gain/loss, body changes with pregnancy, and more. This episode is perfect for anyone struggling with an ongoing health or self-worth issue that wants to feel connection and a bit less alone in their journey. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL FIND OUT ABOUT   Dana discusses some of the events in her life since being on The Lively Show during season one and how the past year and a half has been a personal struggle for her to overcome. She tells us that she believes making drastic health and medical changes contributed to her current hair loss condition. Dana says at first, she believed it was a temporary issue, but it continued and possibly got worse, but this issue began to take an emotional toll on her as well as being more self-conscious with herself. She explains how she became more closed to others, depressed and her confidence diminished as her problem grew. Dana tells us that it took a while to overcome the block to talk to her friends and family about her problem, but by doing so, her confidence is increased. She talks about how she is becoming more accepting of her hair loss and how she is incorporating mindfulness in her daily life as to not spiral back into the denial and rejection phases. Dana attributes her ability to accept and deal with her problem by having gratitude and being thankful for the things she has in life. She tells us how meditation brings her the calmness, peace and stability she needs daily. Dana shares her letter to her intuition that she wrote and how it has helped her talk through the things that were holding her back. She mentions how skeptical she was about tapping into her intuition, but by doing so, she has created a better place for herself in her life. Dana tells us that she has learned to listen to her body’s physical needs and to control her stress to avoid the spiral effect of a problem.   SHOW NOTES   The Lively Show with Dana Shultz (Season One) Write To Your Intuition – Mini Course The Lively Show – Meditation Apps Insight Timer Woman Code – Alisa Vitti Skin Cleanse by Adina Grigore Skin Deep App

TLS #138: Getting Out of a Rut, My Biggest Fear, & Saying No to Money Opportunities (April Q&A)

Today on The Lively Show, I’m answering your April questions! We’ve got a bevy of topics including: how I stay positive and get out of a rut, what my Europe trip plans look like, my advice for new business owners in Chicago, how to say no to opportunities that provide money (that you don’t really want to do), how to handle unwanted gifts, what qualities I’m looking for in a “Mr.”, and more. This episode is perfect for anyone looking to learn a bit more about how I live my own life, or how to handle a variety of personal, career, or business situations.  IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL FIND OUT ABOUT   What’s your sleep schedule/how much sleep do you usually get? I’m curious about how your plan to regulate your hormones and get your cycle back after going off the pill is going? Are you still eating gluten and dairy free? What else has helped? How are things going with your value of pleasure? What would your advice be to a young entrepreneur in Chicago just starting out?  How do you process and apply the fantastic advice and ideas from all the guests on the show? There are rarely episodes where nothing resonates with me. How do you manage it all? What is your favorite ice cream flavor? What are your top 3 guests you’d like to have on the show that you haven’t yet? What do you enjoy doing on your free time? An individual from the past and the present who have had the most influence on you & why? I’d love to know how you manage your daily tasks and get the stuff you need done balanced with the stuff you WANT done. I find there’s not much time for “me” unless I plan for it but then I default to sleep/netflix/youtube. Wondering how you manage it? Also, do you use a planner and/or task management software or to do list? What scent of candles you like to burn?  I’d love to hear an update on your upcoming trip.  What are you most afraid of?  Sunsets or sunrise? How do you say no to work opportunities that don’t feel right in your gut but pay well?  I’m trying to balance the stress of looking for a job post grad with trying to stay calm about how long it’s taking and how many of my friends are already employed. Any tips on how to stay focused and moving forward with getting my career started while also keeping my ego in check and staying calm? What are some of the qualities that you are looking for in the next “Mr.”? And, would you take his name in your personal life and/or in your professional life?  You’ve mentioned running before – what is your routine, are there other fitness activities you do on a regular basis? Have you or do you work with a trainer? My question is how do you stay so positive, and on the days when you’re feeling less than great, what do you do to turn things around? Have you ever suffered from self-help exhaustion? How do you overcome this to get out of your head and back into your heart? TLS #137 with Jasmine Star: Fulfilling Your Soul in a Different, Creative Way & Imposter Syndrome

Today I’m pumped to bring you a goose-bump inducing interview with Jasmine Star, a top-rated lifestyle photographer, branding and marketing strategist, and one of the best speakers I’ve ever seen perform live. Jasmine and I are diving into a variety of subjects including impostor syndrome, dealing with criticism from fans or family, intuition, and launching new creative projects to stay inspired.   This episode is perfect for anyone looking to hear an inspiring story of going for your dreams without formal training, facing fears and feedback, and staying inspired after you’ve established your career. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL FIND OUT ABOUT   Jasmine tells us how she was unhappy with her current direction in her life and how it took her mother’s medical condition to make her realize what was important to her. She describes how she realized that once she was able to question her happiness and acknowledge herself, she was then able to make profound changes in her life. Jasmine believes it was her mother’s illness that changed the trajectory of her life and career path. She tells us that it was the positive encouragement from her husband that made her feel confident to do something she loved and had passion for, which became her photography. Jasmine talks about attracting and repelling and that we need to do things fully and for ourselves first and foremost. She mentions that creating new and “side” projects helps fulfill her inner core of what she does best. Jasmine discusses the imposter syndrome and how we need to tell ourselves and others that we are truly unique, with our own set of values and a voice that is entirely our own. She tells us that we all own the ability to ask others, friends and family, for support in our choices and our lives.   SHOW NOTES Essentialism The Lively Show #90 with Jadah Sellner of Simple Green Smoothies Alt Summit The Lively Show #100 with Elizabeth GilbertAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

TLS #136: My 5 Favorite Guided Meditation Apps

Today on this mini edition of TLS, I’m sharing my top 5 favorite guided meditation apps. Whenever people tell me that they have a hard time hearing from their intuition, or being able to tell the voice of the “ego” apart from their intuition, meditation is the #1 practice I recommend starting with. Observing our thoughts in meditation helps us recognize each thought’s source and feeling within ourselves. And as we get better at understanding what “ego” thoughts tend to feel like, we can start to tell them apart from intuitive guidance. Over the years, I’ve tried many meditation apps, meditation formats, and even a meditation class. And in today’s episode I’m sharing the five guided meditations that I use again and again. This episode is perfect for anyone looking for a great introduction to some beginner-friendly guided meditations in a variety of formats.  Show Notes   Headspace Tara Brach Podcast, guided meditations Oprah + Deepak Meditations (this happens for free a few times a year, or you can purchase them year-round) Ek Ong Kar Sat Gur Prasad by Jai-Jagdeesh (aff. link) To learn more about this chanting meditation, check out this video by Gabbrielle Berstein TLS Episode with Anna Gardner (Vivianna Does Makeup) Rituals Runners Up: Calm + Insight TimerAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

TLS #135 with Mariana López González: Facing Life-Changing News with Grace & Gratitude

I believe today’s episode of The Lively Show is quite simply one of the most powerful and poignant episodes to date. Today we’re speaking with Mariana López González of Elegir La Vida (Choose Life). At the age of 19, a small black dot in Mariana’s right eye quickly escalated into brain tumor surgery just seven days later. And the resulting recovery from that brain tumor has left her unable to eat ANY food or drink ANY liquids for the past seven years. What Mariana has learned about life after living with these limitations is breathtaking and inspiring. This episode is perfect for anyone looking to hear a story of courage, gratitude, and love in the face of life-changing circumstances. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL FIND OUT ABOUT   Mariana tells us the story of how she first learned about her tumor and the emotions she experienced when finding out. She explains that she had many feelings, from sadness to fear, before and after her surgery, but she overcame those emotions from her positive mindset. Mariana describes the details shortly after her surgery, where she almost died due to cardiac arrest, and how her doctors “felt” that she was still here and continued resuscitation to revive her. She tells us the struggles she had during recovery, which included finding out that she lost her ability to swallow food, as well as her four-month stay in a rehabilitation center as she worked to get her life back. Mariana talks about her strong focus and drive during her recovery since she wanted to get out of rehabilitation as soon as possible. She attributes her recovery to the people in her life during that time for maintaining her positive thinking – it was her “love shield” that protected her and made her stronger. Mariana tells us that even though she was upset and depressed at times, as time went on, she was slowly able to accept her circumstances and move forward with life. She tells us the story of how she began to hide whenever food was around which led to her becoming less social and closed from others. Mariana attributes the big shift from running away to her therapist who made her see that she was also running away from people and her social needs. She found that the act of sharing with others helps one embrace uncertainty. Mariana mentions that she has been able to listen to her body and her intuition to make choices about the quality her life, including “tasting” foods! She has found that humor has allowed her to process many things in her life. Mariana admits she regrets not appreciating food more ever since losing the ability to enjoy eating foods. She tells us that the purpose for her blog and writings is to have people love and celebrate life right now in the present. Mariana tells us that the most important thing to embrace is the people that surround us, and the love that these people bring to your life.   SHOW NOTES   Life with Intention Online ClassAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

TLS #133 with Barrett Brooks: What to Do if You Don't Like Your Job

Today on The Lively Show I’m speaking with Barrett Brooks of BarrettBrooks.com and the Director of Growth & Marketing at Fizzle.co. Like many of us, Barrett found himself unhappy at his job several months ago and thought that it may be time to make a career shift. However, rather than follow the initial impulse to leave his current position, he took a series of steps first, that led to a totally new understanding of what was going on and what to do next. As a result, he was able to experience immense joy and resolve some deep issues related to his work that would have simply followed him to his next position – and beyond – had he not looked inward. This episode is perfect for anyone who is unhappy in their career right now, or anyone who wants to proactively learn about what to do when (or if) that time comes in the future. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL FIND OUT ABOUT   Barrett tells us the story of his teenage years and the numerous troubles he had with the law, and how he eventually realized he need to live his life differently and more authentically. He explains that it was his mentors in his fraternity and college organizations that helped him find the path to use his energies better in life. Barrett describes that working for one of the world’s largest firms was not aligned with his vision for his life. He tells us that a short term project for Seth Godin quickly gave him the knowledge and tools to close his first business and move on to a new venture, which later was Fizzle. Barrett describe the hardship of  first being a decision maker to later working with others on a team  while fulfilling the vision and mission of someone else, and how that became one of his strongest assets as a leader at Fizzle. He describes the struggles and disconnect he had with his team and how that pushed him to view the whole situation and himself from an objective standpoint. Barrett reveals that after receiving advice from a close mentor, he saw the possibilities and re-opened the dialog with his team to discover their values and how he needed to live his life to be fulfilled. He tells us how he has found fulfillment in himself at Fizzle even though the team share separate values. Barrett reminds us that he is doing his best to adopt the values in a way that allows him to live his other values elsewhere. He tells us to begin with our own values first, then find influences that work best for you. Barrett tells us that we should develop a sense of self-awareness and live based on that. He tells us that currently he is challenged by finding his priorities and pursuing those priorities.   SHOW NOTES   Fizzle.co Founder’s Story with Jess Lively Jess Lively on Pat Flynn’s Smart Passive Income Podcast The Lively Show with Corbett Barr The Lively Show #67 with Pat Flynn Seth Godin

TLS #132: Self-Worth + Work, Dealing with Family Judgements, & Ambition (Work+Worth Q+A)

Today is a big day: my newest online class, Work+Worth, is now open for registration and I’ve got a new TLS Q+A episode for you! Work+Worth is three weeks long (starting April 6th, 2016) and will focus on overcoming the stress, exhaustion and emotional roller coaster that happens when we over identify our self-worth with our careers. You can learn more about Work+Worth and register for the class here. Today’s TLS Q+A episode is also dedicated to the subject of self-worth and work: I’m talking about how to respond the “so what do you do?” question, handle negative feedback from family members, deal with self-worth and work issues, and more. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL FIND OUT ABOUT   How to handle it when others ask what you do. How can you answer that in a polite way that also kinda says, “Yes, this is my job but I’m more than just my job.” I am a private piano instructor and I find that parents will text me at any hour of day sometimes with topics that should have been emailed. Even if I don’t open it or respond I am still thinking of it at dinner or in the evening. How can I address this or stop thinking about work? I constantly struggle with wanting to be everything to everyone (in all aspects of my life but especially my work). How do I set boundaries with myself and others so that I start listening to my own needs and putting myself first? I would like to know if you have any tips how to get your partner on family on board while working on your dreams to make them understand that you believe in yourself and what you do and you can do it! I sometimes feel like people are saying “sure” but what they are really saying is “you should find something real to do”. What practices do you do to strengthen self-worth? Do you have any touchstones or affirmations that ground you if and when an idea or project doesn’t turn out how you wanted? I was un/underemployed for over 4 years and it did a number on my self-esteem. How you work through those feelings of inadequacy when everyone around you has a full-time job and you’re looking really hard and doing everything you can, but nothing is working out. What career advice would you give to someone who is excited by many interests and has tried several professional paths, but hasn’t found their ‘calling’ or a career that brings both personal fulfillment and financial security? How do you balance patience and ambition in your work, and keep it separate from self worth? Ambition has always been a part of my self worth so what happens when I separate from that?   SHOW NOTES   Work and Worth The Minimalists take on ‘What do you do?’ Brené Brown on The Lively Show Intuition writing exercise Loving What Is Purpose Is Not “The Thing” You Do, It Is Within You Gary Vaynerchuk on The Lively Show  Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Gary is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, keynote speaker, angel investor, runs Vaynermedia, and is looking to own the New York Jets one day. This episode is perfect for anyone who is interested in hearing how Gary merges lofty ambitions with his Values, and how to double down on your own strengths, self-awareness, and intuition. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL FIND OUT ABOUT   Gary tells us about his “clouds and dirt” thesis which the clouds are about living a true entrepreneur life while the dirt is the actual practice. He tells us about his family-first mentality and how his values are import to keep the work-life balance even. Gary talks about his hustle and drive in business and how his business motor pushes him to perform at maximum capability. He’s explains how self-awareness is the single most important thing since it allows people to be happy with themselves. Gary voices that entrepreneurs should be in business to be happier with themselves and their lives, not to be making more money. He talks about how following his inner voice and intuition allows him to move ahead and go full speed with his career. Gary mentions his feelings about the alternatives to unpredictability and how there are no guarantees in life. He tells us that we shouldn’t blindly take advice from others, rather take the bits and pieces that are right for us instead. Gary advises that if people were to put things into perspective more often, they would win. He identifies the reason believes he is good in business and because of his strong work ethic and hustle he puts into life.   SHOW NOTES   The Smart Passive Income Podcast with Pat Flynn Crush It DailyVee VlogAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
