149. 5 Steps to Creating New Habits That Stick
You want to add a new habit into your life but you’re anxious, overwhelmed and not sure where to start - I get it. We don’t need to wait for 2022 to arrive for us to finally start making changes, we can actually start today, right now. The key with creating new habits is spend 5% of our energy thinking big picture of how it might benefit us in the long-haul but then dialing it back & using 95% of our energy on the present moment and what you can control today. I am by no means the habit master but I have learned a few things that I hope will be beneficial for you. After we finish this episode today, you’re going to be able to start taking action. Are you ready to add these new habits into your life and make them stick? If yes - Let’s fire it UP! 5 Steps To Creating New Habits (1) Commit To The Habit : It’s the simplest but yet most important step of them all. Once you’ve decided it’s something you want to do, it’s now the beginning of a new chapter. (2) Visualize The Finish Line : Reminding ourselves of the end product and how it would make us feel can be the daily motivation that keeps us going. (3) Do The Work Daily : This will help us make progress as we continue to show up to do the work. We also are allowed to use the Two Day Rule and skip or take off any day we need when necessary. Only rule is we’re never allowed to take off two days in a row which holds us accountable over the long-haul. (4) Celebrate The Small Wins : Like road tripping across the country, we gotta stop and fuel up at the gas station every so often. Similarly with our new habits, we need to remind ourselves of these small wins to help keep us going. (5) Pick Up Where You Left Off : Sometimes life throws us a difficult hand, we reprioritize what our focus is and our new habits get left behind. That’s fine - all we need to do is flip the switch and get back to it when we’re ready. Challenge for the listeners Spend 10 minutes within the next 24hrs and consider new habits that you would like to incorporate into your own life. I intentionally put this podcast out a few weeks ahead of 2022 because I want you to start TODAY and not wait till a new year rolls around to make changes. Consider what these habits may be and use these five steps to help you stay accountable. Questions from the Stay Dialed In Community Matviy : When do you know that the habit is internalized and you don’t have to make an effort doing something? Steve : Any recs for positive reinforcement for success rather than punish for failure? Manu : How do you operate between the need of discipline and the need of flow? How do you know if you’re forcing it? Shawn : How to stay consistent? Got a topic / question you want me to cover? Hit me UP on IG @Bobbbaaaay Sign up for the Stay Dialed In Newsletter! 147. 3 Ways to Focus On Effort Rather Than Results
You control the effort, not the results. This is a quote from author Ryan Holiday & it’s something we should all read to ourselves out loud every single morning. What would our lives look like if we solely focused on the effort instead of worrying about the results? How much more progress would we make in our lives? How many less headaches would we have? How much more fulfilled would we feel in our day to day? I’m guilty of it. We allow the “results” to be validation which then gives us the green light to keep going but what happens if the results aren’t there? Do we retire our running shoes after 1 run? Do we give up on dating cause the first date wasn’t so hot? Today we’re going to rewire our brain to focus on what we can control : the effort. In time, this is going to make all the difference in every aspect of our life. Let go of what you can’t control & only focus on what you do control. 3 Ways To Focus On Effort Vs Results (1) Learn from past results so that we can better prepare ourselves for the future. It will only help set us up for success down the road. (2) Control the effort of what you can do today in this present moment. The past or what’s to come in the future does not matter at this moment in time. All that matters is what you have in front of you today. (3) When we think about the future, it’s always going to be a work in progress. No matter the results of today, we accept and understand that there will always be room to grow. Challenge for the listeners Spend 10 minutes within the next 24hrs and consider are you looking at results more than the effort? If yes - that’s okay and I appreciate your honesty. Wanna know why it’s okay? Because we all do it! Now make a list of what can you control within a day, week or even month and stick to showing up to whatever that may be. Whether it’s attending 5 workout classes a week, reading 10 pages a day of a book, putting in 30 mins to that new passion project you just started. Focus on what you can control, the effort. It will make all the difference in the long-term, I promise! Giant leaps begin with small steps. Questions from Stay Dialed In Community Finsherlock : Favorite Ryan Holiday book?
