Episode 107: Coaching Challenge – Presence

We consider the coaching space a sacred one. It is a safe, welcoming, confidential and non-judgemental space that allows the coachee to engage in conversation in an authentic, open and honest way. It is a space that fosters trust and connection.   That’s the space that we, as coaches, are looking to create in the coaching room and that requires some presence on our part. But what do we mean when we talk about coaching presence?   In this episode we explore what coaching presence is. We also explore how we might create the optimal conditions for an open and honest coaching conversation that generates new thinking on the part of the coachee.   Enjoy the podcast? Episode 106: Interview – Dr. Jo Hacking

It is always wonderful when we hear about the different ways in which our coaching doctors are using their skills, so when Dr Jo Hacking told us about the retreats that she is running, and how impactful adopting a coaching approach on them has been, we thought we really ought to find out more   In this episode Helen catches up with Jo to do just that. Jo has a background as a Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine but experienced burnout in 2017/18. She stepped away from medicine completely in 2022 to focus on her family, and her business. Listen in as Helen finds out about Jo’s transformational coaching and retreats.   Resources: You can find out more about Dr Jo Hacking’s work and retreats  here: https://aboutwellbeingltd.co.uk/ Connect with Jo here: Linkedin: www.linkedin.com/in/jo-hacking-about-wellbeing Facebook:https://m.facebook.com/woodlinesreset/ Instagram:  @woodlinesart Youtube: @JoHacking   Enjoy the podcast? Episode 105: Coaching Topic – Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence is a relatively new phrase but not a new concept. The Greeks and the Romans were giving thought to the problems we all have with our emotions thousands of years ago. The fact that we’re all still struggling to master our responses to events that produce emotions suggests that we haven’t evolved very much emotionally in the last few millennia. So, Emotional Intelligence is definitely a concept worth exploring. Which is exactly what we’re doing in this podcast. Turning to the granddaddy of modern Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman, we’re exploring the different domains of his model and giving thought to how Emotional Intelligence shows up in the coaching room.  So, join us for a fascinating discussion about how we might help our coachees to be more emotionally self-aware; better able to manage their responses to emotions; more aware of other’s emotions and more accomplished at managing their relationships.   Resources   Enjoy the podcast? Episode 104: Coaching Tool – Transtheoretical Model of Change

Transformational Coaching is all about helping our coachees achieve a change in their lives, whether that be in terms of making lifestyle changes, changing the dynamics of a relationship, or the coachee just changing their perspective.   Change is at the forefront of everything we do and in this podcast episode we’re exploring another model, which might just help us to explore the change process with our coachees. The Transtheoretical Model of Change has been used for half a century in the medical world in conversations around change.   Originally used in the context of addiction, the model is commonly used by medics exploring behavioural change relating to health. It also has its place in the coaching world when we’re trying to understand where our coachee is on the journey to making the changes they want to see.   Resources:   Enjoy the podcast? Episode 103: Coaching Approaches – Systemic Coaching

To borrow some words from a famous philosopher, ‘No coachee is an island’.   We all exist within some kind of system, whether it’s in the workplace, within our social lives, or within a family. In the coaching room there will always be influences and echoes of the coachee’s system as they talk through their situation, their experiences and their desired outcomes.   In Gestalt we talk about the contact boundary, where we meet our environment and where our environment meets us, and there is a constant interplay between the two. One cannot fail to have an impact on the other.   In this episode, we take a look at systemic coaching, an approach that acknowledges and explores the dynamics of the systems within which the coachee resides.   Enjoy the podcast? Episode 102: Coaching Challenge – The Grey Space Between Coaching And Therapy

Do you worry about your coaching crossing over in to therapy? We tend to find that our coaching doctors worry about this, perhaps more so than non-medical people who enter the world of coaching.   In this episode we explore the grey area on the borders of counselling and coaching, including how to navigate it. We will share our own experiences of situations in the coaching room where something other than coaching is required. We hope to set your minds at rest, and provide you with some more understanding, or at least to shine a little light into the grey.   Enjoy the podcast? Episode 101: To Celebrate or reflect? That is the question

In the last episode we were celebrating our first 100 podcast episodes with some reflections on the coaching tools that the coaching doctors we have interviewed love to use. We had great fun reminding ourselves of the wonderful coaches that we have talked to on the podcast over the past two years.   We had intended to include their favourite coaching questions too, but we got a bit carried away with ourselves and ended up running out of time.   So, this week we are revisiting our coaching interviews and reflecting on the coaching questions that our coaching doctors find most useful in their coaching conversations.   Resources: Find one of our Transformational Coaches: https://yourcoachingjourney.com/certified-transformational-coaches/   Enjoy the podcast? Episode 100: A Bit of a Celebration of our first 100 episodes

We’re pretty amazed that we have managed to produce 100 episodes of this podcast, and even more impressed that so many of you are listening to us rambling on every week. It seems that we accompany many dog walks and morning runs. It fills us with joy every time we receive a message from someone letting us know how much they’ve enjoyed and benefited from listening. In this episode we take a moment to celebrate, and to reflect. We’ve gone back through the archive of interviews with our coaching doctors that we have had the pleasure of creating over the last two years and remind ourselves of the variety of coaching tools that they love to use.   Enjoy the look back!   Enjoy the podcast? Episode 99: Interview with Dr. Becky Howie

We’re delighted that our Transformational Coaching Diploma for Lifestyle Medicine has resonated with so many doctors that have an interest in bringing about lifestyle change for their patients and coaching clients.   In this episode Tom chats with Dr Becky Howie, a delegate on the first cohort of our Transformational Coaching Diploma for Lifestyle Medicine. Becky is a GP, a GP appraiser, a lifestyle medicine doctor, a transformational health coach, a women's health columnist, a group consultation advocate. And as if that wasn't enough, in 2024, she entered the world of television with regular appearances as a medical expert on Scotland Tonight. Tom caught up with Becky to find out about her journey into the world of lifestyle medicine and coaching; her approach to coaching; her favourite coaching tools and questions; and what learning to coach has given her. Becky also reveals a big career decision that she has recently taken and tells us which reality TV show she’s most likely to appear on.   Resources: You can find out more about Dr Becky Howie on her website: https://maldodlife.co.uk/ or connect with her on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-becky-howie-29212529b/   Enjoy the podcast? Episode 98: Recommended Read for Coaches

We fully recognise that you don’t learn to coach by reading a book; you have to practice coaching to improve your craft. However, we have both read a vast array of coaching books and have another sizeable collection on our Kindles, waiting for us to find the time to explore. We also have our favourites that we continue to dip into to remind us of theories, tools and techniques that we have encountered. In addition, we love a good book recommendation, and are often asked for them by our trainees. So, in this episode, we are exploring some of the books that could be added to your ‘to be read’ list, in relation to different coaching approaches - and we throw in a few extra tombs that aren’t really coaching books, but we love them!   Resources: How To Coach by Bob Thomson https://www.waterstones.com/book/how-to-coach-first-steps-and-beyond/bob-thomson/9781526484789 Time To Think; Listening to Ignite The Human Mind by Nancy Kline https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/time-to-think-listening-to-ignite-the-human-mind-nancy-kline/355555?ean=9780706377453 Solution Focused Coaching in Practice by Bill O’Connell, Stephen Palmer, and Helen Williams https://www.routledge.com/Solution-Focused-Coaching-in-Practice/OConnell-Palmer-Williams/p/book/9780415447072?srsltid=AfmBOoptL9YtDyG1IIbQoWoJGMjsXcLttj57nYnBAkZnyrd4MKv5Mwh3 Positive Psychology Coaching in Practice Edited by Suzy Green and Stephen Palmer https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/positive-psychology-coaching-in-practice-suzy-green/3996488 Positive Psychology: Theory, Research and Applications by Ilona Boniwell and Aneta D.
