Be There in Five
Kate Kennedy
Be There in Five is a pop culture and millennial zeitgeist-focused podcast by Kate Kennedy (entrepreneur, author, pop culture commentator). Long-form and solo hosted, Be There in Five explores different facets of popular culture in a comedic, thoughtful, and analytical way, covering entertainment, social media, bloggers/influencers, and celebrities, in addition to focusing on the humor found in reexamining the 90s/00s as an adult (from AIM to Zenon). As one listener described it, "come for the relatable humor and lighthearted topics, stay for the surprising levels of depth and thoughtfulness injected into them."

Be There in Bad Vibes Only (with Nora McInerny)
This week, we have a BTI5 book club and Kate interviews friend of the pod (and more importantly, best selling author and host of hit podcast Terrible, Thanks for Asking) Nora McInerny about her new essay book Bad Vibes Only. In this episode, they discuss the confusing nature of knowing aging is a privilege but not wanting to look it, the fallacy of elegance, Millennial work ethic, reflecting on disordered eating patterns, the art of the tendril/skank bang, why she opened with a TS quote from "Mirrorball," among other musings from this brilliant collection that invites you to exist in a state of both existential and surface-level wonder without the pressure to self-improve or find resolve in a post #girlboss America. Afterparty in the Miss USA (with Cori Wallace)
This week, Kate follows up on some of the themes from last week about the lore and cultural significance of pageantry by bringing on a former pageant contestant & PR insider (and Beth!) named Cori Wallace, who chats with her about a variety of topics that extend beyond the scope of last week's drama to meander through pageants being both a reflection (and regression) of elements of modern womanhood. From more granular details like what it costs and how people win, to the mental health implications of striving for impossible standards, the ethical grey area of sponsorship cross-pollination, and coaches being pageant producers. They also share some of their own vulnerabilities for chasing validation based off of a reduced version of themselves and wonder if they ever really stopped. All in all, it's like a fireside chat between friends trying to wind through a topic they feel two ways about thoughtfully. First, however, Kate does review some of the judging criteria she forgot to go over last week, but mostly just obsesses over which part of her body is her 'carriage.'. Enjoy! Something's A-Miss, USA
A deep dive Kate put together last minute about the controversy surrounding the Miss USA pageant late last week when contestants claimed the pageant was "rigged" and/or a product of overt favoritism toward Miss Texas. Insisting she was mostly disinterested, Kate dipped her toe in, then managed to spend the whole weekend researching history, and lore, thinking about her own memories watching, all while developing an incredibly lukewarm take on a topic she knows very little about and isn't totally sure if she should support. Kate recalls covering the following: A breakdown of the Miss USA drama An appropriate reading from pop culture scripture: Chapter: Miss SC, Verse 2007 Kate asks questions about the ethics of favoritism, while clearly implying favoritism almost the entire episode Tugboat eats a cup of Ranch by accident Research about the historical context of women's exploitation for sport that she kind of hates but would've wholeheartedly done for validation An overview of the history of pageants in the U.S. and all the many ways we never stood a chance Greg interrupts for more IVF shots, Kate gets in bad mood Then maybe blames Molly McIntyre's performance in the only pageant that matters (Miss Victory) for the downfall of women Somehow Pretty Pretty Princess gets dragged into it There's still some leftover anger toward children doing a little too much food prep under age 3 on Tiktok Various catchphrases for influencer pipelines that are the hottest launchpads to stardom Kate imagines (hallucinates?) a Jovani insurrection if the Miss USA vote was stolen And so much more! Fortunately, a much more informative second episode featuring an interview with an incredible BTI5 listener/former pageant participant/former employee (Cori Wallace) in the corporate pageant system will be released in the coming days, likely early released on Patreon, this was a last-minute topic choice so thanks for your patience as we align it with the broadcast calendar! patreon.com/bethereinfive SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Helix is offering up to 200 dollars off all mattress orders AND two free pillows for our listeners! 3-in-1
This week, Kate answers three questions and made it into one episode after having an epiphany about 3-in-1 products and their correlation to the patriarchy, consumerism, and religion in line at a Walgreens (where she has all her best thoughts). This turducken of an episode snorkels the irony of the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty being executed alongside Axe Body Spray's incredibly sexist mid-aughts advertising and details some thoughts on her own struggles with body image over the past year that she was surprised came back up to the surface (TW: diets, EDs). Then, she does a mini deep dive of the D.A.R.E. program, including "Cartoon All-Stars," the Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip of cartoons and cereal box characters who didn't want you to smoke dope, discusses the program's efficacy, then answers a listener's astute question about the role of "Just Say No" culture contributing to the boundary setting many of our elders find undesirable. Kate also discusses some nuances that may exist between Boomers and Millennials as it relates to employment, the pendulum swinging from purpose-driven employment back to not needing to find identity in employment, and how it should be okay to meet (not *exceed* your employer's expectations). Then, she goes through a lot of different topics upon being prompted about musical/lyrical pet peeves, from the Pitbull Kodak/Kodak paradigm to her FYP that's fully comprised of Gaylor Swift theories, to a controversial "Hey Soul Sister" roast that may just leave a stain on the front lobe of your left side brain. Make Your Christian Brothers Autumnal
This week, Kate attempts to reclaim the nostalgic magic of fall by detailing her feelings about dystopian Instagram-backdrop businesses and resurrects the fauxliage phenomenon to chat about manufactured coziness and the art of photo taking. She then reminisces about some of her back to school and fall-related longings, like the lore of school supply shopping, how not all spiral notebook manufacturers are created equal, the scholastic book fair, among other things. She discusses her theory about misplaced disdain for early spirited fall decor and PSLs and hypothesizes Millennials' obsession with cosplaying the coziness of yesteryear and perhaps we're chasing a time when the seasons were valued for their beauty and not resented for their role in the passage of time. She then answers listener voicemails about sexist college theme parties, talks about when she met her husband at some point, discusses Trisha Paytas naming her kid Malibu Barbie (??) and her issues with modern naming conventions, does some royals & QEII coverage and the misinformation of Nostradamus' predictions, only to be too long-winded (as usual) and need to go into a part 2 bc of all the great questions this week. That Don't Impress KD Much
This week, Kate has 3 of her friends from college on the podcast following a pilgrimage to the Shania Twain residency to talk about the things that don't impress them much about Vegas (and all the ways Vegas is no longer impressed with them). Following their trips to Vegas at ages 25 and 30 (now here for Kate's 35th birthday), they've noticed some subtle changes from their party girl days, e.g., getting rejected from a day club for having a breast pump and Kate being checked in to the hotel alongside rogue fertility advice. They discuss their weekend mishaps in restaurants, hotels, and spas, discuss the Shania concert, and then honestly review some overrated hotspots on the strip. Then, they reminisce about things like sorority trauma bonding, Kate & Jasmine's early rivalry formed at Yearbook camp, and getting sued for downloading Aladdin on Limewire, among other memories, then finish with crowd-sourced listener "don't impress me" moments. GDI Candy
This week, Kate starts by sharing her thoughts on how being fashionable in the early aughts meant to try the absolute HARDEST, a revelation that feels as glaring as her patent leather pumps after witnessing the shift in collegiate fashion upon spending "welcome weekend" in a college town. Then, she touches on Selling OC before reminiscing via reading through residual sorority stories that listeners submitted the past two years from when she was going to resuscitate the sorority series (before accidentally spending two hours last week analyzing if it was high camp instead). A variety of topics are covered, from sayings like "we plan and God laughs," to the lore of one-shoulder tops, reviews the Kingdom Chaser/Clout Chaser/Straight No Chaser Venn Diagram of sorority archetypes, discusses the sorority symbols that had the most hot-girl energy, to lusting after the mystery of a non-Greek suitor who (if you can believe it) attended college to *learn,* to name a few. Kate also discusses the differences between NPC and NPHC and then snorkels the submitted responses for how chapters sugarcoated the reasons for why a girl wasn't the right "fit" by saying things like she's "worldly" "cute" or "nice," among other adjectives that are compliments in real life but death wishes in the Greek system. However, like any true sorority girl, we always end on a positive and Kate promises this will be the last Greek Life-related ep for 2022. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Store
This week, Kate discusses Bama RushTok from a slightly different angle, exploring the elaborate gender performance and implicit artifice of sorority recruitment in the context of being interpreted as [postmodern] 'camp' and a form of high art to consume, per the insight of Tiktok users @shorthouseplant and @themostes. The meaning of camp made the internet collectively melt down in 2019 following the Met Gala (given its defining characteristic being an inability to be concretely defined), but Kate attempts to explore how as a society we've embraced this incredibly unserious process with a serious level of investment perhaps due to the naïveté of those earnestly performing within these exaggerated circumstances. She also deep dove breakout star Kylan and just needed someone to talk to about the high/low of her dorm room, her pageant trajectory and [alleged] last minute switch to Bama, and her hypothesis about what's going on behind the scenes when you show up to Bama rush with a catch phrase and complete ~11 brand deals in 14 days of high exposure. Kate also spends a solid amount of time thinking of the bumping process as a sort of performance art, and talks about the increased showcasing of dancing/cheerleading talent in Tiktok videos, where the performance of sorority values in the form of costumes and choreography is not only performed for positioning among PNMs, but now to the world, and Kate's worried about the HS cheer gals being pulled out of retirement to do roundoff back handsprings in spirit skirts on concrete in the name of sisterhood seduction. Soft Swinging for the Fences
This week, Kate is joined by her sister to discuss what they've been up to, e.g. their unforeseen TV debut, Kate's new appreciation for sports, and the latest updates with the "soft swinging" scandal they recorded about for Patreon in May. Then, they snorkel listener submitted topics like nostalgic foods, first day of school outfits, what it's like to be the 'planner' of the group, making new friends in a city, The Summer I Turned Pretty, favorite fictional bands, and much more.
