This week, Kate goes back to the beginning. Back to where (the earth, the stars, the sun all aligned, yes) but also back to the beginning of her fascination with southern California beach culture, thanks to 2004's groundbreaking reality show, Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County. This week, Kate has on a special guest that you may have known from the world of bridal design, but given an ongoing legal battle with her former employer, she can no longer publicly identify with her given name and was reintroduced to the world as Cheval in August 2022 (and her namesake line of glam footwear @sheischeval was introduced in October 2022). As the friendly designer and "America's bridesmaid" on TLC's, "Say Yes to the Dress," she brought over 10 bridal product lines to market, dressed noteworthy female icons like Dove Cameron, Chrissy Teigen, and Carrie Underwood, and became one of the most sought-after luxury bridal designers in the world (VOGUE'S TOP TEN). After 9 years of working under a very one-sided employment contract, her former employer sued her in federal court and gained control of what she believed were her personal social media accounts. She resigned in December 2020 and under the current preliminary injunction, she is prevented from using her own birth name in any business or commerce or even to publicly identify herself. She is also not receiving commission for her designs that are still being sold, and she is restricted from identifying herself as a designer to the trade in which her former employer competes until August of 2027. The public support has inspired her next mission in launching a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit foundation that provides resources to better protect the interests of young women and creatives during the formative years of their career. This week, Kate follows up on some of the themes from last week about the lore and cultural significance of pageantry by bringing on a former pageant contestant & PR insider (and Beth!) named Cori Wallace, who chats with her about a variety of topics that extend beyond the scope of last week's drama to meander through pageants being both a reflection (and regression) of elements of modern womanhood. From more granular details like what it costs and how people win, to the mental health implications of striving for impossible standards, the ethical grey area of sponsorship cross-pollination, and coaches being pageant producers. A deep dive Kate put together last minute about the controversy surrounding the Miss USA pageant late last week when contestants claimed the pageant was "rigged" and/or a product of overt favoritism toward Miss Texas. Insisting she was mostly disinterested, Kate dipped her toe in, then managed to spend the whole weekend researching history, and lore, thinking about her own memories watching, all while developing an incredibly lukewarm take on a topic she knows very little about and isn't totally sure if she should support.
