Episode 182 - Coach Pow on Running Fast, Visualizing, and Watering the Plant

In this episode with @coachpow_, a man of many titles and names including EJ Parris, and Othieno Chi Bey-El, we went down a few rabbit holes.  We talked about his ability to build himself back up after setbacks or injuries and the things that helped him. We talked about his inspiration to run, and the people who held him accountable.  In addition we talked about the value of Run Fast, Visualizing, Watering the Plants and Looking Good. The episode was very conversational and will be an easy listen for anyone. Here’s a little more to help you get to know Coach Pow.  Since 2010 Coach Pow has been a Performance Coach and consultant to many athletes within the professional and collegiate world. He has guest lectured various events, advocating his love for movement through storytelling and workshops. You will often hear him say, “Movement is not an exclusive club, and everybody has a place. I am here to help you find it.” His passion for movement led him into coaching himself during parts of his athletic career; Later, he went on to medal at the Commonwealth Games, Pan-Am Games and made the 2008 Canadian Olympic team. His worldly travels allowed him to meet and train with some of the top coaches and gather a wealth of knowledge and wisdom. Though he has retired from competitive track and field, he remains active in the field of play - still training and testing theories on himself. Don’t let his physique intimidate you. With those big muscles comes an even bigger smile and a genuine desire to connect with people on their journey to realizing their mind-body's beauty and strength. You can follow Coach Pow @coachpow_ on Instagram.  You can follow your host, Chris Liddle @christianliddle on Instagram and follow the show @thelifestylechase.  You can learn more about Chris at www.invigoratetraining.com To support the show, please share it on social media, subscribe on all platforms and leave a rating and review.  The Lifestyle Chase is available in video on YouTube and in audio on your favourite audio platform. Episode 181 - Dr. Rena LaFrance On Medical, Societal, Mental, and Physical Health

Dr Rena LaFrance MD FRCPC is a Medical director at the pediatric centre for weight and health, consulting physician for the Stollery Children’s hospital, and has a private therapeutic practice for women’s relationships with love and sexuality. We talked about the her undergrad and beyond, discussed some of the challenges leading up to her medical practice and dove into her fitness journey paying tribute to the one and only Dean Somerset.  She spoke about the challenges of residency in which you end up not taking as good of care of yourself as you might like and how that contrasted with the pandemic we’ve been experiencing in which self care has been imperative for survival and yet constantly changing - looking different for each individual.  We talked about the importance of setting boundaries both in what you are willing to put up with and in how you treat yourself.  Sometimes we have to be okay with being honestly just okay - or maybe struggling and not feeling great but alive. We need to make it normal to tell people that we are struggling and feel safe in doing so. We can’t have a stigma surrounding medication for mental health or therapy or any care that our body may need to keep us alive. The amount of emotional intelligence the last year and a half has called upon those of us who were up to the task is like nothing we’ve ever experienced.  We discussed how dangerous misinformation can be and the impacts the past few years will have on people.  Every action we take in our lives builds up to something more significant than we may give credit towards. Dr. Rena is on Instagram @renalafrance if you’d like to know more about her.  To learn more about your host, Chris Liddle, you can follow on Instagram @christianliddle. Episode 178 - Erin Murray on Nourishing your Body, Uncommon Eats, and Regenerative Agriculture

Here is a bit of an intro to get to know Erin Murray (@erinsuncommoneats) better.  “Knowing that food was an act of love, I always appreciated the time, sensations, and ritual of good food. But as I grew, the realization of how deeply food affects the body became clear. It was obvious that some foods made me feel better than others--more energized and more nourished. Some foods made me feel unwell--with an upset stomach or fatigue or discomfort. The topic captured my attention, and I read my first "diet book" when I was still in middle school. I had no idea what I was doing, but I was intellectually curious. And so began the spiral of learning about food, experimenting, reading about different strategies and topics, testing programs, and experiencing a lot of the diet-drama-mayhem that permeates our culture.  Over time, my knowledge blossomed. And thankfully, my love for food saved me from the pitfalls of dieting. After a lot of experimentation and learning, it became clear to me that diets don't work. And that fresh, whole, real food is deeply nourishing and equally delicious. That act of food love that I knew so well could now be magnified. How caring is it to prepare foods that are not only satisfying, but also deeply nourishing? It's an act of love for those we are feeding, and it's an act of love for ourselves.” Today’s conversation covered everything from the importance of having worked in many different jobs and environments, to the value of working for yourself. We talked about Erin’s career so far, what she offers to the industry and to anyone she works with, and we defined what it meant to be uncommon.  To learn more about Erin, you can follow her on Instagram @erinsuncommoneats , or you can head to her website https://www.erinmurraywellness.com/ To learn more about your host, Chris Liddle, you can follow along on Instagram @christianliddle , @thelifestylechase or you can go to www.invigoratetraining.com This podcast is produced in both audio and video and by supporting the show by subscribing on your favourite platforms and sharing the episode, you support the guest AND the host.  Thank you so much for listening or watching, be sure to check out past episodes, as there is likely to be some familiar faces no matter where you are from.  Get full access to Insight by Chris Liddle at chrisliddle.substack.com/subscribe

Episode 174 - Tim Adams on Creating Opportunity for ALL Kids

Tim Adams is the founder of Free Play for Kids which started out as Free Footie in 2007, when he met a group of kids that broke his heart into a million pieces.  Tim Adams was at an inner-city school filled with struggling kids, doing a story for his former job as a reporter with CBC Edmonton. After turning the mic off, he asked about volunteering. He had played a lot of soccer and thought he could give the sport back to some of the kids who wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to play.  That instance grew into what we know today as www.freeplayforkids.com The lives that kids lead in our diverse community can get dark. Not everyone has the coach that has changed their life or the mentor that leads by example or the opportunities that make things work out. Not everyone has a safe space at home or their basic needs covered or the skills that some of us take for granted like making breakfast or even being able to afford breakfast. Tim works very hard putting in the reps, to make amazing things happen for kids and young leaders. He recognizes the privilege he has and the experiences he’s had that other kids haven’t even been able to imagine before Free Play For Kids.  He also knows first hand just how life changing having access to sport and coaches who make you feel seen can be on someone’s life.  Not only has Tim provided an opportunity to play, he’s grown the program to provide opportunities for leadership, and created a safe space for kids to be their authentic selves.  His team of coaches comes from diverse backgrounds and skills and identities. You can see it in how they lead, and how happy the kids are to be around them.  They’ve found ways to transport the kids so that it’s no longer a barrier. They’ve formed partnerships with businesses to bring food to kids when gathering wasn’t an option. They’ve worked hard to be there for kids when kids need them most in these unprecedented times.  There is no perfect journey to an undertaking as massive as Free Play, but Tim shares a piece of it all on this episode and how sometimes we have to leave a financially secure space where we don’t feel supported and take a risk on ourselves.  Sometimes you have to simply bet on yourself. Just do it.  Over the years, Tim has been recognized as a Top 40 Under 40 (2011) by Edify magazine, he was on of two civilians to receive the 2013 Alberta Justice and Solicitor General Crime Prevention Award, and he was most recently a Northern Lights recipient in 2020.  That’s just the tip of the iceberg. To get to know more about him, he’s most active on Twitter. To get to know your host, Chris Liddle, you can follow him @christianliddle, or follow the show @thelifestylechase or head to www.invigoratetraining.com The Lifestyle Chase is available in both audio and video.
