137. Q&A: Developing a stronger mentality, tips on audition hair, building relationships on social media.
Today is a solo Q&A episode! I'm both excited and nervous, and I want to remind everyone listening in that these answers are all my own opinion. I'm answering questions from both Instagram and Patreon, and I'm just sitting down to talk to you. I didn't prepare anything so these are my pure thoughts — raw, real, and only slightly edited. Now sit back and get ready to hear all about why I've learned to overcommunicate, the fact that there is no timeline for this career regardless of what you may hear, and how I once wrote my dad a 2 page thesis on why he should let me get a hamster.

135. Why & How I Started A Full Company That Isn't "Acting" Related + How It's Fueling My Career with Ashli Pollard
Ashli Pollard, my best-friend-turned-business-partner, comes to us from The Unfiltered Entrepreneur & The Daily Hype podcasts. We each have our own businesses that we are running, hoping to empower working actors and women alike to achieve the life that they always dreamed of. Launching this month, FFP is where the women are speaking. We help produce podcasts for anyone who needs them, because we both know the value that podcasts can have as entrepreneurs. Listen in as we discuss all about podcasts, what it's like to have a career as well as multiple businesses, and how we factor our friendship into our professional relationship.

134. Productivity Tips
*Patreon Study Buddies- Find out more here!*
As actors, our schedules are pretty much out of our hands. Whether it's a last-minute booking, a change to the production schedule, or a flood of self-tape audition requests, we don't really have the luxury of having a consistent routine. We have to remain flexible all the time while trying to figure out how to be productive and it is hard. To help myself out over the years, I've come up with ways to hack my productivity and stay on track. Even though my routines do change constantly, I'm excited to share with you some of what works for me right now!
— The reason why "new" isn't always the answer
— Why I love moving while completing a task
— My "pioneer woman" technique
— The importance of Plug & Play Routines
— How long to try a routine before changing things up

133. Director, Stunt Pro, VO Actor America Young
America Young is a director, voice performer, stunt coordinator, producer, and storyteller extraordinaire. A Sante Fe native, you may know her from directing episodes on Legacies, Roswell New Mexico, and Blindspot, or as the iconic voice of Barbie. She has worked with various studios including Warner Bros, Netflix, Lifetime and Cannal Plus. She was also awarded the 2020 Humanitarian award by UCSD for elevating women in the film industry both throughout her career and with her nonprofit, The Chimaera Project.
In this episode, I sit down with America to talk about her career, what it's like to wear so many different hats in the industry, how she prepares to direct a TV episode, what advice she has for actors, how she balances everything while raising her four-year-old daughter, and more!
— How being a "jack of all trades and master of none" never stopped her from pursuing multiple interests
— The rollercoaster ride that is this industry + how to survive it
— The importance of giving kindness + respect to everyone you meet
— The "Muffin Basket List"
— Her current team + tips for actors on representation
— Why directing an episode on an already-established show is akin to cooking dinner at someone else's house on Thanksgiving
— Dummy sides, why they're given out, and why you should say "yes" to every audition
— Consistent communication with your industry contacts without demanding anything from them
— How your job as an actor is not to book, but to simply do the best version of the scene that you can do
— Dealing with the gentle (but not-always-gentle) level of chaos that bubbles under the surface when you work in entertainment

132. What I Did Well & Poorly in 2021
I am coming at you with a Solo Sam episode to kick off the newest season of the podcast. A big thank you to all of my longtime listeners, and a huge welcome to everyone who is new here. I wanted to start off the season by going over everything I did well & poorly in 2021 in my acting career (Something I borrowed from my good friend Ashli Pollard's The Daily Hype Podcast). Remember to take what serves you, leave what doesn't, and please don't judge the rest!
— Four Things I Did Poorly:
Meeting and communicating with Old/New Casting Directors
Taking time to watch the content I didn't book but auditioned for
Slowing down
Getting caught up in image overacting in auditions
— Six Things I Did Well:
Tracking my auditions + communicating with my reps
Staying in my proverbial lane
Increasing my acting community
Taking liberties in auditions and not taking it so personally
Saying "no, thank you" to extra classes
Staying present
If you want to do your own "well & poorly" for 2021, be sure to tag @onebrokeactress on Instagram so I can see it!

128. Dealing with Jealousy and Comparison
I had a totally different plan for today's episode but a last-minute change has me thinking we need to tackle this topic: actor comparison and jealousy. I highly doubt this is the last time I talk about this, but with a lot of years (and therapy + self-help books) I have developed a way I deal with these things when they come up, I hope it's helpful for you too!
