The Power Of Chengdu Community Radio With DJ Aymen & Kaishandao
Episode 16 is here! Shannon gives updates on the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic right from the epicenter in New York City. She's still stranded in NYC as the situation grows worse in the states. However, things seem to be returning back to normal in China. In Chengdu in particular, now that the virus has subsided, the nightlife scene is slowly reopening bars and clubs for people eager to hit the town and dance again. But what will nightlife look like moving forward?Kristen Ng joins Shannon for a nice interview about some of the uncertainty the scene faces. Performing under the alias "Kaishandao" Kristen's been making club ready "4 to the floor" beats and performing a lot in the city. Kristen also co-runs Chengdu Community Radio alongside DJ Aymen, the booking manager and resident DJ at Chengdu's leading underground club TAG. CDCR is an online radio station that opened earlier this year in Chengdu to give a space to the city's super talented DJ's, artists and storytellers. They work to create immersive online stream experiences of each show; with genres spanning from Techno, Leftfield to Hip Hop. Nothing Nil & Creativity In Quarantine With Knopha
For part 2 of episode 14, Shannon chats with Xiamen based DJ and producer @Knophasound, a contributor to the Home Fitness compilation and a budding producer who’s work often drowns in drony ambient melodies. His music feels timeless. Knopha has been using his down time to make more music. In 2018, he released “Nothing Nil” a space odyssey like EP, which she first discovered from Shanghai’s Eating Music label. The project showcases Knopha’s unique direction and sound.Now he’s dropped another track, in collaboration with Slowcook and an amazing team of producers from across China and abroad to help healthcare workers and victims of the deadly #Covid19 outbreak in the epicenter of Wuhan. All the proceeds from the Home Fitness compilation will go towards buying and donating supplies and essential items for medical care workers on the frontlines. His track in particular “8277-7172” is a stand out, already gaining praise on @Mixmag-1. Slowcook Talks "Home Fitness" Compilation & Equalizing The Dancefloor
INTERVIEW BEGINS AT 5:17 China is still battling endlessly to contain the outbreak and it continues to spread rapidly around the world, with cases rising in South Korea, Italy, the UK, and even right here in New York City. more than 2000 people have been put into quarantine. We’re starting to wonder if the US government is equipped to handle the severity of this situation. Luckily, there are a few people who have a solution. For the first half of the episode, Shannon chats with Slowcook. Based in Leeds, England and Beijing, @slowcook is a resident DJ at one of Beijing’s popular underground clubs called “Zhaodai”. She’s also the founder of Equalizer, a party and workshop series dedicated to CIS, non binary and trans women in music. The workshops serve as a safe place for female DJ's to learn skills on how to rock it behind the decks. The collective has bought a slew of talented DJ’s to run their workshops too like Eris Drew & Octo Octa, DJ Moxie and Sherelle. Having been in Beijing since the virus hit, Slowcook has seen firsthand just how much damage the virus has done to the middle kingdom and wanted to take action to help. I spoke to her about how shes been holding up through things and her recent curation in collaboration with her team mates in creating the "Home Fitness" Compilation. The State Of Hong Kong & ABSURD TRAX With Alexmalism
INTERVIEW BEGINS AT 6:14Life has come to a complete stand still in China and Hong Kong, especially within the entertainment world. Clubs and bars have been forced to shut down in an efforts to contain the Coronavirus outbreak. After a month long hiatus, Shannon is back to speak on how the virus has effected her life, not knowing when she will be able to return to Chongqing, China, a place she's called home for the last 4 years.Shannon also has a chat with Hong Kong native and producer Alex Yiu also known as @Alexmalism, a classically trained violinist who plays alongside his own brash and bass filled rhythms and compositions, which often paint a sonic picture of Hong Kong's rather grungy and historical landscape. He's apart of Hong Kong's buzzing and genre bending label Absurd TRAX who have recently performed at the legendary Berghain during CTM festival. The label has been growing some popularity for their other worldly releases and giving a peak into Hong Kong's experimental music scene. Living In China As A Black Man With Li Hei Shuai ( 李黑帅 )
INTERVIEW BEGINS AT 4:42In Episode 11, we meet Ellis, also known as Li Hei Shuai( 李黑帅 ), a social media comedian and viral content maker living in Chongqing, China. Ellis has been living in Chongqing since 2013. He has a funny story too! In 2016, he made a video for his friends in China addressing the day to day questions and sometimes rude comments he would get from locals, living as a black man in China. He did this all while speaking standard Mandarin too. After casually posting it online, the video snowballed and spread all around social media, even Time magazine reached out to him for an interview. Now Li Hei Shuai, has become some what of a local celebrity in Chongqing because he can speak Chongqinghua which is the local dialect in the mountain city. Not only has he been creating content from big social media sites like Youtube and China’s Youku and Weibo, but he’s been on a slew of Chinese TV game shows and even movies too. INTERVIEW BEGINS AT 6:02DADA Club has existed for 10 years in Shanghai and 7 Years in Beijing. It has become a household name in China’s underground music scene for showcasing China’s local talent and bringing artists and DJ’s from around the world. At the center of it all is owner, Michael Ohlsson. Michael came to Shanghai in 2003 to find a small music scene bubbling out of the city. After getting to know some of the local artists and DJ’s, DADA Club eventually opened its doors shortly after. The club has had a wealth of talent walk through ranging from Suzi Analogue, Teklife to even Skrillex. I talked to Michael about his long career in the music industry and what it takes to run a successful club overseas.
