Samantha Power on The Power of Idealism

Samantha Power started as an outsider, a war correspondent who wrote impassioned pieces for the Washington Post, Economist, and others about the failings of the American government on an international stage. That voice led to her Pulitzer Prize winning book "A Problem from Hell": America and the Age of Genocide and earned her a job in the cabinet of President Barack Obama helping to shape the very policies she was once a harsh critic of. Samantha has served both on the National Security Council and as an Ambassador to the UN. Most recently she was nominated as USAID Administrator. She is also the author of the New York Times bestsellers Chasing the Flame: One Man's Fight to Save the World and The Education of an Idealist: A Memoir, which is now in paperback and was named one of the best books of 2019 by the New York Times, Washington Post, Economist, Vanity Fair, National Public Radio, and TIME. What I love about Samantha's story and her wisdom from navigating the halls of power, is her winding path to get there. In this episode, we get into: How being an outsider, starting something new, or feeling like an imposter can help us to deconstruct the world around us How being mission driven can help focus and motivate your work The importance of setting modest goals instead of seemingly intangible ones. World changing happens in the smallest bites. The X test: Using "if all I get from doing X, will it be worth it?" and so much more Enjoy! Extreme Explorer Mike Horn on Pushing the Limits

Today on the show I have a dear friend and arguably the foremost living Explorer on the planet: Mike Horn. I have had the incredible fortune of traveling to some really amazing places with Mike such as the South China sea around South Africa and the Amazon off the coast of Brazil. Some of my most inspiring and best moments of my life have been tagging along with Mike on his adventures. Mike is also one of the hardest working, stubborn bad-ass is that I know. He's explored the Peruvian Andes with a raft and a paraglide, crossed South America solo over 6-months, swam down the Amazon River in a hydrospeed, circumnavigated the Earth along the equator for more than 40,000 kilometers unmotorized by boat, bike, and on foot. He's faced extreme temperatures crossing the North pole during winter and climbed many of the world's highest peaks such as Gasherbrum I and II, Broad Peak, Makalu; all without oxygen. Among his many adventures, Mike also works to share his knowledge, passion and experience with others through his youth mentorship programs, coaching, and media. In this episode we get into: how to inspire and motivate yourself how to dream big and the one thing we need to achieve big things in the midst of hardship how to persevere through what others might think is impossible the changes Mike has seen in our planet as he's circumnavigated it almost 30 times and so much more Enjoy!
