Emmanuel Acho on Uncomfortable Conversations
In the wake of George Floyd's murder in 2020, Emmanuel Acho recognized that Black and White people simply do not understand each other in America and he wanted to use his voice to do something about it. So he launched a video series, Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man. His goal? Open a dialog on topics we've been afraid to talk about: racism, privilege, cultural appropriation, and more. That show exploded with over 70 millions views, widespread media coverage, and led to his must-read NYT best-selling book by the same name. Emmanuel studied sports management and was drafted into the NFL while earning his masters in Sports Psychology in the off-season. Not long after retiring from the NFL, Emmanuel started his broadcasting career at ESPN where he was the youngest national football analyst, and named a 2018 Forbes Under 30 selection. In this episode we get into: Emmanuel's upbringing from growing up as a first generation American to Nigerian immigrant parents, to attending an all white affluent grade school, to his career as a pro NFL football player to today. How to start with what you have Building and developing an idea through exploration How conversation leads to understanding, and understanding can break down barriers between cultural differences Insights from his conversations so far, including answers to tough questions that stuck with him Enjoy! Design Systems That Fuel You with Srinivas Rao
Whether you know it or not, there are a whole host of things that either stimulate or obstruct our productivity and creativity. Where we work, the people we see, the equipment we use, the sounds we hear, even the information we consume. The good news is that we can develop systems that can help us harness and fuel our creativity instead of diminish it. Today on the show, I'm sharing a few of my favorite lessons from a recent class by Srinivas Rao that helps us to look at how our environments are either helping or hurting our creativity. Srini is the bestselling author of The Art of Being Unmistakable and An Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity for Its Own Sake. His work has been featured in Forbes, Inc, The NYTimes, Business Insider, and The Blaze. You might also know him as the host of The Unmistakable Creative podcast where he's interviewed more than 700 people from every walk of life. In this episode, Srini guides us through a couple different environments to help us get started. Of course, that's just the tip of the iceberg. If you want to check out the rest of the class you can find it on CreativeLive. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. When Preparation Meets Opportunity with Paul Ninson
One of my favorite things about the community we have around this show is the ongoing conversation not just between my guests, but with you, the listener. Whether it's through my email newsletter, social media, or texting, the community we've built over 10+ years is real. This year, many of you asked for guests who are on their way up. Folks who have put what they've learned into action. Well, I could not think of a better show to bring in the New Year with one such guest, Paul Ninson. Paul is a documentary photographer and aspiring Cinematographer, born in Kumasi, Ghana. He's also a long time listener of the show. Having discovered this podcast and CreativeLive as a curious and budding photographer, Paul decided to sell his phone to buy his first camera. That was just three years ago. His path from then to now is incredibly inspirational, including a chance meeting of Brandon Stanton of Humans of New York in Ghana, connecting with yours truly, and eventually making his way to his dream school at the International Center of Photography in New York where he was awarded the Director's Fellowship and George Moss Merit Scholarship. To date, Paul's work has been featured in the World Photography Organization, and exhibited at the British Council. He was one for the official state photographers for the HRH The Prince of Wales and the HRH The Duchess of Cornwall's visit to Ghana. He has worked for various NGOs and organizations including Discovery Learning Alliance, Ark Foundation, United Nations, and many many more. Very excited for you to hear Paul's story and I hope you get a chance to view his work. You can find him at @pninson on instagram or paulninson.com. Enjoy + Happy New Year! Overcome Creative Obstacles
One of the most popular questions I get is how to overcome the creative obstacles that are in the world. Whether they are out there, or within us, we've told ourselves a bunch of stories of why we can't create. I thought it would be very helpful, based on listener requests, to do an episode on creative obstacles. When you're feeling stuck, recognize you're not waiting to be able to create, you're waiting to FEEL LIKE creating. That's a very different thing. The trap is that we often don't feel like creating until we're well under way. If you wait for the feeling to come before you start, you're going to be sitting there waiting. So when I look to figure out what is actually blocking me from creating, I think about these three things: * Am I waiting for someday or that perfect moment? how can I start now? what's one thing I can do to move me forward? * Where is my time going? How can I structure my time such that realign schedule with my ambitions and values * How can I work in microbursts and reset my expectations on what I can create in a given moment. Ready to start moving forward? I'll see you over in the episode. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive.
