Things Photographers Spend Too Much Time Talking About

Recently I joined photographers Ben Von Wong and Tim Tadder, along with hosts Walid Azami and Mathieu Young on Clubhouse to chat about "Things Photographers Spend Too Much Time Talking About". But this is not about photography widgets, lenses, and photo shoots. It's not even really specific to photography. This is about career choices. It's about following your heart. And of course - the title is tongue-in-cheek because it's actually about the stuff we don't talk about enough. Some things we get into: How to let go of goals that aren't serving us Short term vision vs long term vision Wandering off our path and how to listen to our intuition to weave back toward what we know we need to be doing The seasons of our careers and how to manage through the down cycles where we might not be firing on all cylinders So many good nuggets in this one. Please shoutout to @vonwong and @timtadder if you like what you hear. And if you're on clubhouse, follow me (@chasejarvis) and hopefully we can connect in a room very soon. Enjoy! Have a question? Escape the Portfolio

As a professional creative–or even an aspiring amateur–it's standard protocol to have a portfolio. Whether it's posted online or neatly bound in a black leather book bearing your name, or both, the portfolio is meant to be a cohesive sample of your work. But why is the thing so damned precious? Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favor of having a portfolio. I understand it's a core convention of creative professions and that it does the heavy lifting when it comes time to "get work"… But in recent times I've become increasingly disenchanted with the concept of "the" portfolio in our digital world and I've noticed–in myself and others–that the metaphysical weight alone of the word portfolio can crush the creative spirit rather than enhance it. Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention with Erin Meyer

Back in 2009, Netflix Talent Officer Patty McCord and CEO Reed Hastings published a presentation called the "Netflix Culture Deck". This 125 page deck, now has over 20 Million views and created quite a buzz in the HR and tech world for its radical ideas that countered typical corporate culture such as vacation policy that equated to "take some", a "do what you think is best for the company" expense policy, and mindset that "adequate performance will get a generous severance." And that's where it started. Erin Meyer, my guest on today's show, read that deck and found herself startled, confused, and curious. There has never before been a company like Netflix. It has led nothing short of a revolution in the entertainment industries having to reinvent itself over and over again. How have these counterintuitive and radical management principles made such unprecedented flexibility possible? Erin is an author and a professor at INSEAD, one of the world's leading international business schools. I ran into her work several years ago when I read her book, The Culture Map: Breaking Through the Invisible Boundaries of Global Business. Her work has appeared in the Harvard Business Review, The New York Times, and Forbes. She's been noted as one of the 50 most influential business thinkers in the world by Thinkers50. Today we're talking about her latest book, NO RULES RULES: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with past and current Netflix employees, among others, our conversation explores high performance teams and how we can apply their culture into our own lives. Some topics we dig into: Hard work is irrelevant. Excellence isn't just about hard work, if someone is a pain to work with (or be around) it can impact everyone. The benefits of candor and a culture of feedback. Giving others freedom to make the biggest decisions gives them fuel to succeed. And so much more. Enjoy! Have a question?
