Rohin Shah will first describe the more philosophical argument that suggests that a superintelligent AI system pursuing the wrong goal would lead to an existential catastrophe. How much should the effective altruism community focus on becoming more influential, and how much should it focus on how to use its influence? In this talk, Joshua Monrad (Future of Humanity Institute) will discuss this question. Borrowing Holden Karnofsky’s analogy of “rowing and steering,” the talk will present arguments in favour of ‘steering’ more than we currently are. Significant progress has been made on food security issues globally over the previous decades. However, significant risks remain, particularly in the form of under analysed tail risks that could reduce food output by between 10-90% globally, placing billions at risk of starvation.
