Dr. Joel Fuhrman explains the importance of understanding serious health risks associated with processed and fast food consumption, even from occasional use. These “Frankenfoods” do not merely increase death from heart disease and cancer, but also impair the human brain, creating depression, lowering intelligence, and increasing propensity for drug abuse and crime. Importantly, the worst food choices create food addiction, leading to excessive caloric intake and dependency.

Joel Fuhrman, M.D. is a board-certified family physician, seven-time New York Times best-
selling author and internationally recognized expert on nutrition and natural healing. He specializes in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional methods. Dr. Fuhrman is the President of the Nutritional Research Foundation and on the faculty of Northern Arizona University, Health Sciences division. He coined the term “Nutritarian” to describe a nutrient-dense eating style, designed to prevent cancer, slow aging, and extend lifespan.
For over 30 years, Dr. Fuhrman has shown that it is possible to achieve sustainable weight loss and reverse heart disease, diabetes and many other illnesses using smart nutrition. In his medical practice, and through his books and television specials, he continues to bring this life-saving message to hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
Dr. Fuhrman is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (Perelman) School of Medicine
(1988) and has received the St. Joseph’s Family Practice Resident’s Teaching Award for his
contribution to the education of family practice residents; and a C3 Cardiology Global Health Award for teaching nutritional science to cardiologists.
Dr. Fuhrman operates the Eat To Live Retreat in San Diego. Dr. Timothy O'Donnell is a leader of the Lifestyle Medicine specialty in Indiana. He founded the first Indiana medical practice focused on Lifestyle Medicine which aims to improve health through lifestyle changes based on evidence. In addition, he sat for the first certification board exam for Lifestyle Medicine offered internationally and is among the first 216 doctors who have been recognized as leaders in this field since 2017. He has provided lectures to physicians, medical providers, community members and sponsored Indy VegFest over the past 10 years. He is currently a faculty member for the IU School of Medicine and teaches Wellness, MindBody Medicine, Lifestyle Medicine, and clinical skills to 1st and 2nd year medical students. Dr. Doug Lisle is an evolutionary psychologist and co-author of The Pleasure Trap: Mastering the Hidden Force that Undermines Health and Happiness. He and his colleagues (Jennifer Howk and Richard Seidel) have developed a revolutionary method for approaching life challenges and improving self-confidence and self-esteem. They describe their approach as Esteem Dynamics — an approach with clinical insights derived from evolutionary psychology.
Central figures having major influence on the development of Esteem Dynamics include Richard Dawkins, John Tooby and Leda Cosmides, David Buss, Robert Trivers, Steven Pinker, and Geoffrey Miller. All of these individuals are considered world-leading theorists in evolutionary theory and human psychology. Somewhat surprisingly, insights from these trailblazers has yet to reach mainstream clinical psychology, and thus major advances stemming from some of the world’s greatest thinkers have yet to be systematically applied to problems of helping people improve their lives. Esteem Dynamics is the first such effort, and weds Dr. Lisle’s 30-years of clinical experience to the deep insights into human nature only recently available via evolutionary psychology.
Dr. Lisle received his undergraduate education from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Virginia, and was then appointed Lecturer in Psychology at Stanford University. His research and clinical interests include health and wellness, self-esteem, relationship satisfaction, the treatment of anxiety and depression, the genetics of individual differences, and optimizing achievement motivation. Dr. Mussallem is a consultant in the Division of Hematology Oncology at Mayo Clinic and Assistant Professor of Medicine. She is a lifestyle medicine breast cancer specialist at The Robert and Monica Jacoby Center for Breast Health and serves as Medical Director for Mayo Clinic Florida Humanities in Medicine. She is double-board certified, including a board certification in Lifestyle Medicine and has over 25 years of patient-centered clinical wellness experience. She has international recognition in the field of breast medicine, lifestyle medicine, integrative oncology, cancer survivorship, and a unique personal experience as a stage IV cancer patient diagnosed 3 months into medical school and in 2021 a heart transplant recipient. She shares that her journey as a patient cultivated her boundless energy and deep purpose to help patients flourish during and after adversity. In 2015, she founded the Integrative Medicine and Breast Health Program at Mayo Clinic Florida, a patient-centered program that works with breast cancer patients during and after a breast cancer diagnosis, introducing them early on to the importance of lifestyle optimization alongside conventional cancer treatments with a goal to reframe cancer as a “teacher of life,” leading patients to discover renewed vitality through healthier living. She is frequently invited to give keynote presentations and podcasts to international audiences, appear on radio and television shows, and has authored journal articles, abstracts, and other written publications. Her research focus includes the impact of whole-food, plant-based nutrition, and weight management on breast cancer outcomes; awareness of alcohol related breast cancer risk; and breast cancer survivorship quality of life.

She received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Yale University with training on the underpinnings of both excess food and alcohol consumption. Dr. Gearhardt currently investigates the contribution of reward dysfunction (e.g., craving, liking) to eating-related problems across the lifespan. She uses a multi-method approach to explore the neurobiological, psychological, and behavioral factors that contribute to problematic eating behavior. Dr. Gearhardt also investigates the role of addictive processes in compulsive overeating and is the Director of the Food Addiction Science and Treatment Laboratory. She created the Yale Food Addiction Scale, which has been cited over 1000 times and has been translated into over 10 languages. Her research has received funding from the National Institute of Health and the American Heart Association. She has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and her research has been featured on media outlets including the New York Times, ABC News, the Today Show, and Time Magazine.
