Fintech Insider USA: Alex Sion, Citi Ventures (S1E6)
Welcome back to the 6th and final episode of this new show, Fintech Insider USA! In this episode, Sam Maul meets Alex Sion, Co-Head of D10X at Citi Ventures!
To start the episode, Alex explains what D10X actually is, and what the name stands for. The programme has been active for about 4 years and the consumer side is organised around two macro themes: modern life and economic vitality. Alex argues that the nuclear family has not existed for many years now and banks have been built around the image of the traditional family. How do you support families that perhaps do not fit into the image of the nuclear family?
We continue talking about how you innovate at a company as large as City. Where do you focus? How do you generate relevant ideas on a global scale? With such a global reach, how do you accommodate many very different markets?

331. News: With great data comes great responsibility.
This week we have some great stories for you as Simon Taylor and Brandon Chung are joined by a couple of great guests:
Loral Quinn - CEO of Sustainably
Scott Liddell - Head of Channel and Digital, CYBG
We kick off the episode by taking a look at, well, ourselves! We are the news! Building the banking platform of the future with 11:FS Foundry! DNB, Norway's largest financial services group, has decided to extend its investment into 11:FS Foundry and is committed to building new services on the platform, initially focussing on loans. Are we going to see more and more fintechs collaborating with bigger banks? Is this the future? (01:29)
Next up, we talk about how the FCA has done a major shake-up of overdrafts! Banks and buildings societies will no longer be allowed to charge fixed monthly or daily fees for overdraft. There will also no longer be higher fees for unplanned overdrafts rather than arranged ones. This means that banks have to advertise their APRs to their customers. Is showing a customer an APR really the best strategy? Can you guarantee that your average customer understands words like APR and percentages? (08:58)

330. Interviews: Patrick Collison, CEO of Stripe
We start off the episode start by discussing Stripes global success. With the amount of payment companies out there, how have they reached such a success? We take the story so far back as to when the company was called /Dev/Payments! How do you create a successful company? Could it be as easy as listening to your customers and do what they want?
David brings up one of Patricks quotes, If people don't think what you are doing is a little bit strange, maybe it's not strange enough. How do you find a strange enough strategy? Is being strange a way of moving away from a mimetic-heard dynamic in an industry where new innovations are key? How do you come up with a good idea and make sure it is different than what everyone else is working on?
Patrick also shares what's next for Stripe and why one could argue that we are no longer in ponds, but in a connected ocean.

We continue by, of course, talking about the smoooth campaign with Snoop Dog and how the campaign has now reached 660 million impressions online! How has this campaign had an impact on Klarna as a brand, and what is it like being associated with Snoop Dog?
Derek and Sam further talk about how the whole business model of payments has moved beyond transactions and Derek argues that companies that focus only the transaction are in a race to the bottom. First up, we have David Brear and Jason Bates taking on the topic of "who are the biggest competitors to traditional banks?" David is on the side of tech giants, while Jason is arguing for the challenger banks! David argues that in a fight, he would always take the side of the players with the best talent, biggest customer numbers and the brands that people actually trust. Jason's argument is that challenger banks can offer ten times better results for ten times lower cost, how could they not be the bigger threat?
