115: Building the Work Culture That Inspires A-Player Loyalty with Steve Bousquet

Dr. Sabrina invited Steve Bousquet back to the show to hear more about how he has grown his team from twelve team members to twenty-seven team members over the last few years using strategies that are taught in Dr. Sabrina’s How to Hire the Best book series. Today, Steve shares his entrepreneurial story, his highs and lows when it comes to building a team, and how he has had to grow personally in order to grow his team. Having diversity on a team—not only in terms of ethnicity, but also in terms of personalities, strengths, perspectives, and backgrounds—means making better decisions as a team because we’re tapping into that diversity. It’s better to hire people who have A-player qualities that fit with your immutable laws than it is to hire people for their skill set. Skill sets can be trained, developed, and nurtured, but you cannot turn somebody into an A-player with training. Dr. Sabrina addresses how to distinguish between the performance of an A-player and someone who is not an A-player. When errors are made by an A-player, it is often due to a gap in our systems somewhere. Use errors as opportunities to strengthen those systems. If something in a team member hits a nerve in us, we need to ask ourselves how it might be related to our own behaviors and choices in our business and how we handle things. We need to be aware of how we are living our life as a leader because that will translate into how the business is run. 112: Transitioning to a Sustainable Business with Don Zerby

Dr. Sabrina’s guest today is Don Zerby, who owns Ecolawn. Don has been following the How to Hire the Best, Profit First, and The Pumpkin Plan systems for at least four years now and today he is sharing his story of his first hire after reading How to Hire the Best, as well as how he has integrated what he has been learning from the Better Business, Better Life™ program at Tap the Potential. When there’s a high turnover rate in the business, it is a huge time and energy drain and causes us to lose money when we’re constantly having to hire and train. Warm bodies on the team that are tolerated are another cause of time and energy drain. When you have A-players on your team and teach them how to utilize and work from their strengths, the whole team becomes highly focused on keeping people in their strengths and reduces drag by shifting responsibilities around if somebody is operating outside their strengths. Parkinson’s Law and the Pareto principle: If you aren’t familiar with how these relate to being more effective in our businesses, Dr. Sabrina and Stacey give some insight! You need to understand the psychology of A-players in order to attract them to your team. Part of this involves making a culture that celebrates and supports the A-player mentality. Be cautious that your policies and procedures do not deter and repel your A-players and best clients. As business owners, it’s very important for us to have outside feedback when building our strong teams. We need thinking time and time to reflect on powerful questions. Creating a culture of safety, security, and trust allows team members to feel comfortable with sharing their ideas. Dr. Sabrina, The Business Psychologist™ is passionate about the overall wellness of entrepreneurs, and their businesses.
