184: Becoming the Employer of Choice for A-players with Adam McKee

We are shining the Great Places to Work spotlight on Adam McKee and Contemporary Woods. Adam has been through our How to Hire the Best course, and he is being intentional in working to become the employer of choice to attract the A-players he wants. He is proof that simple changes can improve the culture of a business.  Adam McKee has been a craftsman his whole life, learning to build and wire homes from an early age through working with his dad and grandfather. He continued learning craftsmanship through fine woodworking in high school, residential carpentry in his associate’s degree, and construction management in his bachelor’s degree. After finishing his bachelor’s degree, an opportunity came to buy an existing business, Contemporary Woods, which specializes in custom furniture and woodworking. 183: Creating a Work Environment for A-players with Rob Minnick

As we highlight another “Great Place to Work,” we are joined by a repeat guest on the podcast. He is using metrics with his team members and implementing the principles he has learned to recruit and retain A-players for his business. Along with the normal business challenges, he is seeing success and big changes since working with us at Tap the Potential over the past year.  Rob Minnick is CEO and president of Minnicks, Inc. and Minnick Training Center. He has 39 years of experience in the heating and air conditioning field, especially in mechanical design and building performance for owners. Rob decided to concentrate on the family business because he loves what he does, it allows him to meet people, and he enjoys a challenge. Rob earned his certifications from the State of Maryland Air Conditioning Contractors of America, Building Performance Institute, Residential Energy Service Network, US Green Building Council, and National Comfort Institute.  In addition to his heating and air conditioning work, Rob is active in many associations. He lives with his wife, Dawn, in Burtonsville, Maryland, and they have three children, one granddaughter, and a dog. 182: Why Moore Green is a Great Place to Work

We love working with business owners who are dedicated to creating “Great Places to Work.” They are committed to creating opportunities for their team members and giving back to their communities. Today’s spotlight shines on a living, breathing example of that commitment! Blake Moore began working in the family lawn fertilizer business when he was 11 years old. While he enjoyed working outside and being with friends and family, he wasn’t sure lawn care was his future. While pursuing an accounting degree in college, he entered the horticulture program and found his passion.  At age 32, with his wife expecting their third child, he left the family business and began his own venture. Since that time, Blake has gone from a “solopreneur” who wore all the hats to a business leader who strives to find opportunities for the team members to grow and develop. Through teaching and coaching team members, Blake has found an unexpected joy in business.  Losing his wife to cancer, Blake became a widower, which helped him realize that work supports life and not the other way around.
