Gregory Heisler is a portrait photographer based in Syracuse, New York who has photographed Bill Clinton, George H Bush, George W Bush, Mikhail Gorbachev, Yasser Arafat, Benjamin Netanyahu, Michael Bloomberg, Rudy Giuliani, Bruce Springsteen, Chinua Achebe, Denzel Washington, Mick Jagger, Partick Stewart, Al Paccino, Hugh Grant, Tim Burton, Joni Mitchell, Liam Neeson, Muhammad Ali, Carl Lewis, Shaquille O'Neal, Bill Gates, Bono and countless more household names for publications like Life Magazine, GQ, Esquire, Rolling Stone, ESPN, New York Times Magazine. Greg has shot over 70 covers for Time Magazine and he has also photographed major advertising campaigns for clients including American Express, Ford, Guinness, Merrill Lynch, Nike, Pfizer and Reebok. Gregory is the recipient of the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award and the Leica Medal of Excellence. His book, 50 Portraits, is one of the all-time great volumes on the subject of portrait photography, giving a sharp yet human insight to the process of making editorial portrait photographs. Greg is probably my favourite photographer ever and spending this time with him was one of the absolute highlights of my career. I tried to play it cool on the call but inside I was totally freaking out. The reason I'm such a big fan of Greg's work isn't because of who he has photographed, it's because of how he has produced absolutely beautiful photographs consistently, under high pressure for massive clients in shoots that usually last just a few minutes. For me, when you're doing photography for free, it's EASY. But when you're shooting a world leader or an A-list star for the cover of an international magazine and you've 5 minutes to do it, knowing that there are probably a thousand photographers ready and willing to take your place if you mess up, that's pressure, and for Greg to do it consistently for decades without leaning on a trademark style, technique or gimmick but by creating an array of unique photographs every time, it's phenomenal. Greg's expertise, experience and enthusiasm pour out in this conversation and you're going to hear a master craftsman lift the lid on what goes into making great portraits as well as some amazing anecdotes, an insight into the gear he used over the years and his thoughts on the current state of the photography industry. Marc Wilson is a documentary photographer from Bath, England. Marc’s work has been published in National Geographic, The British Journal of Photography, The Times, the Telegraph, Wired and he’s exhibited his work round the UK and Europe. Marc’s latest project, A Wounded Landscape, bears witness to the Holocaust through the stories of 22 Holocaust survivors. It was shot over 6 years at 160 locations through out Europe and features over 350 photographs. We talk in depth about this project, the logistics of it, the challenges and sensitivities around it, the importance of continuing to talk about the Holocaust and how the process of making this work changed Marc as a person. We also touch on Marc’s other work, The Last Stand, which documents the physical remnants of Second World War defence structures and their place in the landscapes that surround them. It’s fascinating conversation with a thoughtful, sensitive and articulate photographer and I feel very privileged to share it with you. Dylan Nardini is the 2021 Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year and the winner of the 2021 British Photography Awards Landscape Category. Dylan is a self-taught photographer who has a knack for finding unknown locations and revisiting them again and again until he finds them in the best conditions.Dylan also shoots amazing abstracts and dabbles with Infra red photogrpahy. We touch on all of these things as well as covering Dylan’s photography origins, shooting landscapes with a 50mm lens, dropping a camera in the sea and much more. Niall Benvie is a photographer originally from Scotland who’s now based in Burgundy, France. Niall grew up on a berry farm in the north east of Scotland and first got into photography to document the bird and plant life in his local area. After studying Geography at university , his photography interest turned into a 30 year career as a photographer, writer and photography guide. Niall is probably best known for his photographs of plants and animals using a field studio to create unique and beautiful images which are reminiscent the kind of illustrations you’d find in an old encyclopaedia or field guide. Our conversation covers Niall’s upbringing, his early awareness of environmentalism, his varied career, the rhythms of creativity and much more. Dr Alexander Mustard MBE, better known as Alex Mustard, has been taking underwater photographs since he was just 9 years old and has worked as a full time underwater photographer since 2004. Alex has a PhD in Marine Ecology and his combination of subject-matter expertise, underwater photography experience, technical innovation and sheer passion for what he does makes him one of the absolute best in the world at what he does. Alex photography has won many awards including European Wildlife photographer of the Year in 2013, 4x category wins in the British Wildlife Photography Awards and the ADEX Award for Extraordinary Contrubidon to Underwater Photography in 2016. In 2018, he was made an MBE for his achievements as an underwater photographer. He’s written more than 500 articles for photography, Marine, wildlife and diving publications as well as 5 books including Underwater Photography Masterclass.He is the inventor of Magic Filters, a filter system specifically for underwater photography, he is the associate editor of Wetpixel.com an online community for underwater photographers and he teaches underwater photography workshops all around the world. So, its fair to say we’re talking to an expert here! I know nothing about this kind of photography so it was fascinating for me to sit with Alex and just witness his sheer enthusiasm for what does. Kai Hornung is a landscape and fine art photographer from Hanover. Germany, who won the 2020 International Landscape Photograph of the Year just a few years after getting serious about photography. Kai has a great approach to his photography and as a relative newcomer he’s not constrained by established ways of thinking and allows himself to be very free, creatively. We talk about how trip to Ireland opened Kai’s eyes to landscape photography how and why he leaves images open for interpretation, looking for new pictures in well known locations, the parallels between music and photography and much much more. Paul Sanders is a landscape photographer based in Kent, England. Paul is a former picture editor for the Times newspaper, a job that engulfed his life and, in his words, made him lose touch with reality. When the demands of the job forced him to step away, Paul looked to landscape photography to help rediscover a balance in his life and he now specialises in mindful landscape photography, an approach that emphasises slowing down and focusing on the process of creating the photograph rather than on the photograph itself. This approach has resonated with a lot of people and Paul now runs mindful photography workshops and retreats for his own ‘Discover Still’ brand and also for leading photography workshop company Ocean Capture. Our conversation delves into Paul’s backstory at the Times which really gives context for the landscape work he’s doing now. We also talk about his approach to his work, imposter syndrome, shooting in a square format and much more. I really enjoyed talking with Paul and I appreciate his openness in our conversation. Howard Schatz is a photographer based in New York who is probably best known for his extraordinary photographs of dancers underwater. Howard has published 22 books, and has shot advertising campaigns for clients including Ralph Lauren, Nike, Sony and Mercedes Benz. He’s been featured in Time magazine, Sports Illustrated, Vogue, GQ, The New York Times, the Today Show, Good Morning America and the Discovery Channel.  His work has been exhibited all round the world and he’s won many many awards in his career including the 2020 IPA Sports Photographer of the year award for his project, the Shape of the NFL. Our conversation touches on where Howard gets his ideas, how he developed his signature underwater photography style, the process of collaborating with subjects, what it was like to photograph Muhammad Ali, Howard’s mission to make photographs that surprise and delight him and so much more.
