592. Earned Freedom: What Independence Really Means
Today isn’t just fireworks and flags—it’s a call to wake up. In this special Independence Day episode, Brian Gubernick flips the script on what freedom really means. Yes, we celebrate July 4th to honor our nation's liberty, but if we’re being honest, most people never stop to ask: Am I truly free in my own life? Brian doesn’t just talk about national freedom, he bridges history with high performance, using the sacrifice of our Founding Fathers as a mirror for entrepreneurs, parents, and peak performers. Because freedom -- real freedom -- isn’t handed to you. It’s earned. Through clarity. Through sacrifice. Through the boring, disciplined actions no one wants to do. From addiction and prison to redemption and discipline, Brian reflects on the story of Charlie Engle to expose the lie we often tell ourselves: that we’re free just because we can “do what we want.” But convenience is not freedom. Comfort is not freedom. Real freedom is having the strength to choose what’s right, and to do it without needing permission. So today, while the country celebrates, Brian challenges you to audit your own life: Where are you still not free—financially, emotionally, physically, or relationally? What consistent action will you take today to start earning it? Because freedom isn’t found. It’s forged. -- Text NDO to 59559 to subscribe to our daily texts + get a link to the newest episode. 591. Charlie Engle: "Change Your Relationship to Pain"
Brian Gubernick breaks down one final, powerful lesson from his recent conversation with ultra-endurance athlete Charlie Engle: change your relationship with pain. Whether it’s running marathons, building a business, or enduring the trials of life, high performers don’t avoid pain -- they invite it. Brian unpacks what Charlie meant when he told Matt Damon, “You just have to change your relationship to pain,” and explores how that mindset separates the fragile from the formidable. You’ll learn about: - The Pain Paradox: why discomfort is often a sign you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be - The Finish Line Fallacy: how your mind decides when to stop, and how to push beyond that - Why success demands that you break the addiction to easy How to treat pain as your training partner, not your opponent Plus, Brian issues a challenge: pick one hard thing you’ve been avoiding and step toward it today, not to suffer, but to sharpen. Pain isn’t punishment. It’s preparation. If you haven’t listened to the full Charlie Engle interview, go back and hit play. It’s packed with stories and strategies that will rewire the way you think about struggle, growth, and grit. -- Text NDO to 59559 to subscribe to our daily texts + get a link to the newest episode. 590. Optimism Is True Moral Courage
Brian Gubernick takes a deeper dive into one of the most powerful lessons shared by ultra-endurance athlete Charlie Engle in his recent interview: “Optimism is true moral courage.” But this isn't about wishful thinking or “positive vibes only.” This is about forged optimism -- the kind that’s born in the middle of chaos, failure, pain, and pressure. Brian explores what it really means to choose optimism when everything is falling apart -- when your business is struggling, your family is stretched thin, or your confidence is taking hits from every angle. He unpacks why optimism is more than personality, it’s a leadership stance. It’s a practice. A discipline. A refusal to let doubt silence belief. Drawing parallels from Charlie’s Sahara expedition, the leadership of Ernest Shackleton, and real-life decisions we make every day, this episode challenges you to ask yourself: Where am I letting doubt silence my belief? This is a must-listen if you're leading a business, a team, a family—or simply trying to lead yourself through adversity. Because holding belief when it’s easy is not courage. But when everything’s against you? That’s when optimism becomes your sharpest weapon. -- Text NDO to 59559 to subscribe to our daily texts + get a link to the newest episode. 589. Nobody Is Coming to Save You
Following up on yesterday’s powerful interview with ultra-endurance athlete Charlie Engle, today’s episode dives into one of the hardest, and most liberating, truths he shared: Nobody is coming to save you. This isn’t doom and gloom. It’s a call to radical ownership - the foundation of real transformation. Brian unpacks the “fantasy of rescue” that holds us back in business, health, and relationships. He challenges you to stop waiting for the perfect plan, the right moment, or someone else to fix what only you can. You’ll walk away with: - A mindset shift that puts you back in control - Two non-negotiables to anchor your daily action - A simple sentence that will change the way you approach obstacles - Real talk on why personal responsibility is the most compassionate truth you can embrace Who is Charlie Engle? Charlie Engle’s life is anything but ordinary. A world-renowned adventure athlete, Charlie is known for chasing the improbable and often achieving the impossible. At 62, he’s one of the most accomplished endurance runners alive, having won grueling races across nearly every continent. In 2007, Charlie ran nearly 5,000 miles across the Sahara Desert—an unprecedented feat captured in the documentary Running the Sahara, produced and narrated by Matt Damon. That expedition became the launchpad for his humanitarian work as a co-founder of H2O Africa, now known as WATER.org, which continues to provide clean water access across the globe. But Charlie’s story isn’t just about running. It's about redemption, purpose, and resilience. Running played a pivotal role in his recovery from addiction to drugs and alcohol—an addiction that nearly cost him everything in his 20s. Since taking his last hit of crack cocaine 32 years ago, Charlie has used running not only as a sport, but as a lifeline. It sustained him through sobriety and through his unexpected 16-month stint in federal prison, where he was incarcerated in 2011 for overstating income on a home loan application. Today, Charlie continues to inspire through keynote speaking engagements—from the Boston Marathon to the United Nations—and through powerful storytelling that blends grit, humor, and vulnerability. Cheryl Strayed once remarked after sharing a stage with him, “Wow. And I only hiked 1,100 miles.” Charlie now leads two new endeavors: he serves as Head of Recovery at Anonymous Health, and he’s preparing for Dead Sea to Everest, his next ambitious expedition. Still, his favorite role is Dad—he beams when talking about his two sons, Brett and Kevin. Charlie lives in North Carolina with his wife, Stacey Astacianna Hatcher, a tropical ornithologist. -- Text NDO to 59559 to subscribe to our daily texts + get a link to the newest episode. 587. How to Get Lucky: The Science and Strategy of Creating Opportunity
Brian Gubernick breaks down the truth about luck: it’s not a random stroke of fortune, it’s a strategic advantage you can build. Inspired by Naval Ravikant and the original framework from neurologist James Austin, Brian unpacks the four types of luck — blind luck, hustle-driven luck, luck from preparation, and luck from reputation — and shows you exactly how high performers engineer their own “luck.” You’ll learn: - Why motion creates momentum (and opportunity) - How mastering your craft sharpens your lens for spotting unseen wins - The role your character plays in attracting deals and relationships - Why “I never get lucky” is the language of defeat — and what to say instead If you’ve been waiting for a break, this is your wake-up call. 585. The Single Greatest Way to Develop Mental Toughness
Brian Gubernick zeroes in on one of the most vital traits entrepreneurs and anyone striving for excellence can develop: mental toughness. Inspired by Andy Frisella’s renowned 75 Hard program, Brian breaks down why facing challenges head on every single day is the secret to building resilience, discipline, and a mindset that thrives under pressure. This episode isn’t about sculpting your body or boosting your followers. It’s about becoming relentless. Whether it’s pushing through a workout, making a difficult call, or choosing discipline over convenience, these small daily actions build an unshakeable identity. Over time, that identity separates amateurs from pros. You don’t need to commit to the full 75 Hard regimen (two workouts, a gallon of water, a strict diet, reading, progress photos) unless you’re ready. But you do need the principle: overcome hard every day. Tune in to discover why consistency in discomfort is the gateway to leveling up in business, in life, and in leadership.
