Psychodynamic Therapy and Brain Squirrels

Psychodynamic therapy and brain squirrels? This episode is a real mash up of odd brain stuff and nerdy therapy talk. First, I talk about a weird and unwanted trick my dog taught herself and how we can all learn a little something from my four-legged friend. Second, I answer a listener question! My listener asks about the differences between psychodynamic treatment and CBT for OCD. I’m certain this topic won’t be for everyone, but I hope I gave enough reasons why CBT is superior for OCD. Spoiler: CBT is better for OCD and anxiety than psychodynamic treatment. For those of you looking to learn more about helpful and unhelpful things to do in therapy, you can read this IOCDF article from Drs McKay, Abromowitz, and Storch. Thank you for listening! The FearCast could not continue without the questions and moral support of you, the listener. I am so grateful for your contributions and participation. We made it through a year! Here’s hoping to many more years! Click here to listen to more episodes of the FearCast. The post Psychodynamic Therapy and Brain Squirrels appeared first on FearCast Podcast.

Faith and Doubt: Guest Mike Erre

The Faith and Doubt Series has begun! This episode features a guest interview with Mike Erre. Aside from being an all around good and boisterous guy, Mike is a pastor and hosts the VOX Podcast. He was so kind to join me to discuss issues surrounding anxiety and doubt common among people Protestant Christians and he shared some wonderful insights. In case you’re uncomfortable with the topic, this episode contains blatant discussions of faith and doubt from a Christian perspective. Future episodes will include perspectives from other faith traditions, but you have to start somewhere, right? You have been warned! The episode also includes a listener’s question about whether OCD can create false feelings of attraction or otherwise sexual thoughts. I try to be quick about it, but I can only do so much to wrangle myself in. Please visit the VOX Podcast to hear more from Mike Erre. If you want to learn more about the three levels of belief discussed on the show, you can read this article on Convictions, Persuasions, and Opinions level beliefs. For more about Scrupulosity, please read this article at the California OCD and Anxiety Treatment Center. The post Faith and Doubt: Guest Mike Erre appeared first on FearCast Podcast.

Religious Scrupulosity

In this episode I discuss Religious Scrupulosity, which is a sub-type of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder concerning religious or moral issues. As always, I tried to shoehorn more information in it that I really need. Hopefully the episode didn’t go too far off the rails. I can’t believe it took me this long to get to talking about Scrupulosity, but here we are. I discuss what Religious Scrupulosity is, how it differs from general religious doubt, and how to treat it with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Lastly, I go over a tool found in Dr. Ian Osborn’s book, Can Christianity Cure My Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. As mentioned in the episode, here is the link to Dr. Ted Witzig’s Principles of Effective And Religiously-Sensitive Exposures Finally, here are some other books or resources I either mentioned in the episode or think might be helpful: Understanding Scrupulosity, by Thomas SantaThe Doubting Disease, by Joseph W. Sensorimotor/ Hyperawareness

Are you way too focused on your breathing, blinking, or heartbeat? Are you constantly distracted by screeching tires or little particles in the air? Identity Is More Than Your Diagnosis

Anxiety, depression, bipolar, abuse, isn’t our identity. You are more than your mental illness, so why are your making it your central characteristic? Even if you aren’t fully identifying as your diagnosis, we sometimes let our mental health struggles dictate who we are and what we do. In this episode, we’ll spend some time discussing how we develop our identity, how you might be identifying as your diagnosis, and what we can do to broaden and diversify our identity. Thank you to everyone who sent in questions! I’ll be getting into those questions soon. This past few weeks has been a roller coaster (more on that in the episode), but I look forward to attacking those questions with vigor, sass, empathy, and a ferocity only seen in tepid internet trolls! Question & Answer

Have a question about anxiety and OCD treatment? If so, you’re in luck! I dedicate this entire episode to answering listener questions. How are anxiety and paranoia related? How does Exposure and Response Prevention look different for Pure-O? Can Obsessions flip flop? Can you ever get rid of OCD for good? Additionally, I surprised myself by briefly discussing phonophobia vs misophonia. This is the question and answer episode! If you have questions for a future episode, please message me through fearcastpodcast.com, or ask me through Instagram! Most importantly, please remember to rate and review the show at iTunes, or wherever you find your podcasts. Reviews help other listeners find the show, and more listeners mean more questions, and more questions mean more Question and Answer episodes straight to your ear holes.
