Singing is central to Scripture and at the heart of the Christian life. Today Andrew asks why that is, and how God’s people sing thankfully, corporately, noisily and joyfully.

Nehemiah chapter nine comprises of a heartfelt prayer of confession from the children of Israel as they recount the goodness of God over many generations, and face the facts of their sin and rebellion. What was true then, and is still true now, is that God remains faithful and is full of forgiveness, mercy and grace. Jason Shields is one our Pastors, based at our Catford site.

The physical walls of Jerusalem have been rebuilt, the people have moved back, but the work hasn’t finished. Now there is a focus on the spiritual rebuilding of God’s people. What did that look like for them and what does that look like for us? Joe Macnamara is one of our Pastors and he leads our Downham site.

In chapter 6, Nehemiah faces opposition from his enemies but sadly also betrayal and undermining from his own people. How he responds to anxiety and fear and continues to build in faith will help us deal with the anxieties and pressures we experience. His simple prayer, ‘Strengthen my hands’, brings God’s power into his situation. Hilary Dalziel is one of our Pastors and Assistant Site Leader on our Catford site.

Until now, Nehemiah’s story has had very clear goodies (Israel) and baddies (everyone else). In this chapter, we learn that things are more complicated, and that injustice exists within God’s people as well. Nehemiah fights it in three ways – and they are all ways that can help us fight injustice today. Andrew Wilson is our Teaching Pastor.

“Wherever God’s work is being done, an enemy always arises.” In Nehemiah 4, we look at the reality of spiritual opposition to the work of God and how to respond to it, with application for Christ’s Church today as she rebuilds post-pandemic. Moses Nwanji is one of our Pastors who is based at our Downham site.

The walls of Jerusalem do not get rebuilt by one powerful leader with a dramatic swell of music; they get rebuilt by dozens of unknown people doing little, unglamorous tasks, together. And it is the same in the church.

Steve Tibbert, our Senior Pastor, speaks from Nehemiah 2 in our annual Vision Sunday. He reminds us of the vision God has given us to reach, restore and resource. He looks back at these last 18 months and their impact on us as a church. He then looks forward to the future, echoing Nehemiah's words in chapter 2 verse 17: ‘Come, let us rebuild.’

There are a number of parallels between Nehemiah’s story and ours. Andrew Wilson, our Teaching Pastor, considers some of them as we begin this new series, and shows how Nehemiah responded by weeping for the walls, confessing corruption and praying God’s promises.

Everyone has a story, a story that helps us make sense of the world and the decisions that we make. The Bible challenges us, not only to re-think our story, but also forces us to consider whether to make Jesus’ story our own story. In this message, we see how Jesus changes the life of a Samaritan woman, and her whole town, as they realise that Jesus is the Saviour of the World.
