49. How GTD can help reduce burnout
It's the last episode before our summer break and this is a special one!
This episode contains a longer interview recorded for GTD Connect® members. In this episode, you will hear from Getting Things Done® (GTD) author David Allen and three trainers from our global network, to discuss how GTD can help to reduce burnout. While it has been an issue for years, burnout has been rising steeply since early 2020. The World Health Organization now calls burnout an official medical diagnosis.
It is a result of chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed, and is characterized by three dimensions:
- Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion
- Increased mental distance from ones job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to ones job
- Reduced professional efficacy
For this discussion, David is joined by Emily Gregory, Morten Røvik, and William Elliott. Morten shared an infographic on the stress curve, which is available for download for GTD Connect® members.

48. GTD for Hobbies and Housework
"This is just for managing stuff at work" is a common thought when first coming across GTD. But the practices are just as applicable for everything else going on in your life, including hobbies and chores!
Again inspired by a thread on the GTD Subreddit (link below), Morten and Lars cover how you might use GTD for both work around the house and your hobbies, including
- Where they show up in a GTD system
- How they become operational on your lists of projects and next actions
- How getting them out of your head and into a trusted system can help a relationship
..and much more!

47. The life of a commitment
"Are there any Youtube videos/articles that provide a complete example for a tiny project?" was a question Lars struggled to answer on Reddit. So we decided to make an episode of it!
Your life is made up of commitments but what does it actually look like as it travels through your GTD system? How about...
- An email from a car rental company
- Notes from your last meeting
- You noticing your old fishing gear
..all the way up to the birth of a child! All of these trigger commitments on very different levels and in this episode, Morten and Lars walk through various examples and how they are handled in a GTD system.
Thanks to Reddit user MagicFluffBull (we love saying that username), we hope it was OK that we borrowed your question for this episode.

46. Horrible GTD Systems
What does a horrible GTD system look like? Does that actually even exist?
From either a misunderstanding of the GTD best practices, or perhaps just a step on your GTD journey you haven't yet reached, Morten and Lars have come across many different "horrible" systems, such as:
- Mixing projects with next actions or missing projects all-together
- Overbooking the calendar leaving no room for other work
- Not capturing everything that should go into your GTD system
..and finding a suitable reference system for you - in the end of the episode, it becomes quite clear that Morten and Lars have very different approaches for reference :-)
