387. Elevating Your Presentation and Communication Skills with Fern Chan

Today, my guest is Fern Chan. Fern is an author, a presenter, speaker, course developer, and trainer working with people like us, attorneys, and others for the purposes of helping you become a more dynamic presenter, so that you never lose your audience. As attorneys, we're always communicators - we are always charged with the responsibility of getting a story or getting up point across, whether it be to the Bar Association audience, your local community, opposing counsel, a jury or a judge. Communication is what we do business it, it's how we get our points across. Learning to become a better presenter, particularly if you have structured presentations, is a skill set that really helps to set attorneys apart. Fern has so much to share and I’m sure you’ll enjoy! In this episode, Neil and Fern discuss:Fern’s professional journey and how she transformed her own communication and presentation skills. Captivating your audience and clearly communicating your message. How to do a self-assessment of your presentation skills. Laying the foundation and clearly communicating the information. Key Takeaways:Nobody wants to listen to a presentation that is a long PowerPoint full of words that the presenter just reads. Your ability to communicate is central to your ability to excel as an attorney - whether with clients, in the courtroom, or with other attorneys. When practicing, try to find an audience who doesn’t know your industry - if they can understand it, you’ve nailed it. There is an art to communication and storytelling. You can’t just jump in the middle, your audience needs to know the purpose of your presentation. "There's always somebody in the audience who’s listening to you for the first time or getting this information for first time. They need to know what on earth is happening - it’s classic storytelling, right? You don't just jump into the middle, people have to know what the plot is about." — Fern ChanEpisode References: Videosocials - https://videosocials.net/ Join Fern for Solve the Crime of Death by PowerPoint on Fri, 13 Oct 2023 at 12 PM EST, and craft an unforgettable presentation! https://fernchan.com/ Get in touch with Fern Chan:Website: https://fernchan.com/ Book: How to NOT Suck at Presentations - https://www.amazon.com/How-NOT-Suck-Presentations-Presentation-ebook/dp/B09G1XNDYN/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fernchanauthor LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/fernchan/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 386. Learning Your Way Forward in Building Your Firm with Amber Saunders

Today, my guest is Amber Saunders. Amber is an attorney with her own firm, The Saunders Firm in Atlanta, Georgia. She started out, like many of us, thinking she was going to do one type of law, then ended up doing something completely different - now focusing primarily on estate planning and business law in the Atlanta area. We talk about that journey, and the intersection between those two practice areas. Amber is very candid about the mistakes that she made and the hurdles she had to overcome, and how almost all of them were centered around her, and I think that's a lesson that we can all learn a great deal from.In this episode, Neil and Amber discuss:Different workplace models for law firms. The relationship between estate planning and succession planning. Learning to be a good employer.Setting expectations, building SOPs, and properly communicating with your team. Key Takeaways:Having a will and your documents in place well before you pass will make things so much easier for your family and organization after you pass. Procrastination is one of the biggest challenges facing estate planning attorneys - everybody thinks they’re going to have more time. Learning to lead a business is a practice - you have to learn to be a good employer in order to attract and retain good employees. Being a solo firm lawyer, you are still a business. You need to pay attention to the reports and other financials. It is a business that needs to be monitored. "I screwed up a lot. I went to therapy and realized, we can't be everyone else. And until I grow, my business won't grow. I'm going to have to do something different." — Amber SaundersEpisode References: Molly McGrath - https://hiringandempowering.com/ The Law Entrepreneur - Ep 325. 382. Mindful Meditation for Attorneys & Entrepreneurs with Lexlee Overton

This is a classic rerun of my episode with Lexlee Overton. Today we’re covering a slightly different type of topic, but a critical topic for both attorneys and entrepreneurs: how to improve your outlook and mindset through the use of mindfulness meditation. Our guest, Lexlee Overton is a 5th generation lawyer (that’s right – her parents, her parent’s parents, and her parent’s parent’s parents, and her parent’s parent’s parent’s parents were all trial attorneys) who has seen firsthand the impact that being an attorney can have on someone’s physical and mental health. So she founded Mind Over Law to help other attorneys learn scientifically proven techniques for releasing stress, anxiety, and fear – without changing professions.Get in touch with Lexlee Overton:Website: https://mindoverlaw.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/LexleeOverton Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mindoverlaw/  Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 381. Attention is the New Currency with Neen James

This is a classic rerun of our episode with Neen James. Neen is a leadership and attention expert known for delivering high-energy keynote presentations that challenge audiences to leverage their focus and pay attention to what matters most at work and in life – and the value of attention is exactly what we’re going to be talking about today.Neen recently wrote a new book, Attention Pays: How to Drive Profitability, Productivity, and Accountability, in which she argues that we live in an attention-deficit society and that by having more intentional attention in our actions and relationships with others, we can improve our profitability, productivity, and accountability. Plus, I know that you all will be delighted by her personality, wisdom, and Australian charm.Neen is also generous enough to offer Law Entrepreneur listeners a FREE gift: you can get a sample chapter for Attention Pays and a copy of her 5-Step Attention Challenge by going to thelawentrepreneur.com/neenjames.Episode Reference: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale CarnegieGet in touch with Neen James:Website: https://neenjames.com/ Book: Attention Pays: How to Drive Profitability, Productivity, and AccountabilityYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/AussieNeen Twitter: https://twitter.com/neenjames Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NeenJamesCommunications LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/neenjames Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/neenjames/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 380. Navigating a Post-COVID World in Entertainment Law with Joshua Lastine

I'm really excited to have Joshua Lastine on the show today. Joshua is an entertainment law attorney, and as many of you know, I'm connected to the entertainment industry through my daughter who is a professional actress at the musical theatre world on the west coast. So I've seen a lot of what goes on in the entertainment world from the performers side and from the creative side, but very little about what is behind the curtain on the legal side. Joshua has worked with all the big entities in that arena. He started his practice right after the pandemic and he has built that up and three years since was built into a thriving entertainment law practice. So it's a great opportunity for me to talk about two things that I like a lot, solo and small firm practitioners and the entertainment industry. And there's no better representative of that intersection than Joshua Lastine. I hope you enjoy. In this episode, Neil and Joshua discuss:Overcoming adversity in entertainment and/or law. Tenacity and anti-fragility. Starting a solo practice during lockdown. Maintaining relationships to stay top of mind.  Key Takeaways:Life is about leveling up and the journey it takes to get there, not the final location. It takes different types of lawyers for different types of work that need to be done. If someone declines working with you, it would just be a different personality match. Network early in your law school experience, especially if you know what area of law you are looking to go into. Find a way to organize your contacts into different levels of importance to you and your business and make sure to stay in contact with and top of mind for those people.  "For every battle I have, I just gain that much more experience and become that much better of an attorney." —  Joshua LastineGet in touch with Joshua Lastine:Website: https://lastinelaw.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lastinelaw/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Lastineimpressions/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshua-r-lastine-b3632b42/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 379. Delegate Your Way to Freedom with Brett Trembly

Today we are excited to have a returning guest, Brett Trembly, the founder, and CEO of Get Staffed Up. In this conversation, we talk about Brett’s newest book, 24 Months to Freedom, and go through some of the chapters which he has laid out like a roadmap on the important positions in your law firm and how to know when and how to hire for them. As founder of Get Staffed Up and a lawyer himself, Brett knows the struggles that lawyers face in this process and I know you’ll get a lot out of our conversation today. Enjoy! In this episode, Neil and Brett discuss:Bringing on a staffer to serve your law firm. How a virtual assistant can assist your law firm. Why you need to be doing consistent marketing. The secrets of growth as you bring on additional staffers.  Key Takeaways:If you don’t have an assistant, you are your assistant. Delegating will allow you to find time freedom that you couldn’t do before. Your marketing doesn’t need to be perfect - it just needs to be good and be consistent. Having a great system in place to convert clients, such as an intake coordinator, can present the right portrait and impression of your firm.Sourcing your staff from the same company will ensure you know that they are being trained consistently and know how to work together to best serve your clients. "You have to protect your time as an attorney, you have to get rid of it every 10 minutes that you do work, that a $10 an hour assistant shouldn't be doing, you're losing $50." —  Brett TremblyGet in touch with Brett Trembly:Website: https://getstaffedup.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Getstaffedup1 Twitter: https://twitter.com/btrembly Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GetStaffedUp/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/getstaffedup LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bretttrembly/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/getstaffedup/ Check out Brett’s Book and other resources at: 24 Months to Freedom: How Modern Law Firms Use Smarter Staffing Solutions to Fast Track Their Way to Success - https://getstaffedup.com/lawentrepreneur/ To hear more from Brett, check out Episode 195 - Staffing Up Your Firm for Faster Growth - with Brett TremblyThank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 378. Integrated Design in Your Branding with Christine Raniets

Today, my guest is Christine Raniets. Christine is the owner of a company called Peran Design, a design firm that builds brands and helps market businesses, particularly for solo and small firm law practices. And, even more specifically, for women-owned or female-based law firms. In our conversation, we get into a lot of discussion about what is it that we ought to be looking for as attorneys and as business owners, when we look to hire a design firm to help bring our branding, our marketing, our social media, and all of our design elements together into one cohesive plan. Christine shares a lot of light on the subject and some insights as to how we can go about doing this in a systemic and organized manner. I think you'll get a lot out of it. In this episode, Neil and Christine discuss:A broad-scope approach to branding and image creation. Creative reach outs, both direct and indirect. Integrating design for consistency and cohesion. The changing landscape of marketing and social media.  Key Takeaways:Dig deep to understand your story and what problems you’re trying to solve. That is a great way to understand what you want your branding to be. Digital is your number one marketing priority, but print is not outdated or unimportant. Social media is king for content. For law firms, you need to be on LinkedIn, have a great profile, post content, and interact with influencers in that space. Short-form video is the key. People want to see you, get to know you and your firm, and connect that way.  "I advise you to explore LinkedIn a little bit further. It is the place where people are going. There's content that's incredibly informative, helps you grow your company, webinars are available, and you get immediate notification of people switching jobs so you can be in touch with them. It's such a great resource, and such an important valuable business development tool for law firms." —  Christine RanietsGet in touch with Christine Raniets:Website: https://www.perandesign.com/ Email: craniets@perandesign.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christine-raniets-93203560/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder.
