337. Criminal Litigation with Joe Tamburino
Today my guest is Joe Tamburino. Joe is a transplanted New Yorker who moved out to Minneapolis, Minnesota to go to law school and never left the city after that. Today, you're going to hear about his journey. We don't have too many criminal defense attorneys on the on the program so it's really nice to touch base with somebody as well known as Joe and get his observations on some of the nuances of developing a criminal defense for primarily criminal defense, and why some of the things that are necessary in that type of environment are different from say if you were to do a family law, or estate planning or something of that nature. It’s a great conversation, and I hope you enjoy listeningIn this episode, Neil and Joe discuss:How trial law is similar to acting. Joe’s journey from the prosecutor’s office to being a public defender, to opening a private practice. Why criminal lawyers get recruited more often than those doing civil work. Creating a work-life balance as a criminal litigation attorney. Key Takeaways:Being in front of a jury is like being on stage - you have to convey your message not only with your words but also with your body language, you need to know your audience, and you need to know your material. You need to have a good office manager. If they are good with the business administration and are willing to learn, they can be invaluable to growing and managing your firm. If you want to work from home, do not get into criminal litigation. There are factors that will prevent it due to the nature of the field. If you don’t know what tech is going to be available in the court room, call the clerk ahead of time. The jury wants something of a tech nature because they expect it and learn well with it. "Really to learn how to manage people because everybody's different. Everybody has their own, pluses and minuses, not everyone can get along, not everyone is friendly. But you try to match that and you try to pick the best people that you can." — Joe TamburinoGet in touch with Joe Tamburino:Website: https://www.caplantamburino.com/ Email: jtamburino@caplanlaw.com Phone: 612-341-4570LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joe-tamburino-78aa5b10/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 376. Taking Your Law Firm from Unpredictable to Wildly Profitable with Mike Morse
This is a classic rerun of my episode with Mike Morse. Mike Morse is a superstar personal injury attorney out of Detroit, and he runs one of the biggest and most profitable law firms in the state of Michigan, doing millions of dollars worth of business annually. So what does that have to do with small solo practitioners trying to grow their businesses?Mike has written a book called “Fireproof: A Five-Step Model to Take Your Law Firm from Unpredictable to Wildly Profitable,” and it outlines the system he used to take his successful law firm to stratospheric levels—but the principles are even more readily applied the smaller your firm is.You really should check out his YouTube channel as well. Not everyone, nor most solos, can afford to do the TV commercials that Mike is a master of, but there is a lot to learn regarding how to craft video marketing messages from watching his content.Get in touch with Mike Morse:Website: https://www.855mikewins.com/ Email: mike@855mikewins.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/mikemorselawfirm Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/855mikewins/ Book: Fireproof: A Five-Step Model to Take Your Law Firm from Unpredictable to Wildly ProfitableThank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 375. Creating the Best Team Ever at Your Law Firm with David Burkus
Today, we welcome back one of my friends, David Burkus. David is also one of my favorite authors and I met him back when he published his book, Friend of a Friend, which I believe is the single best book ever written about networking and the science behind networking and, more specifically, relationship marketing. Today we will talk about David’s newest book, Best Team Ever - which is all about the science behind teamwork. I couldn’t be more thrilled to have David back on the program today, enjoy! In this episode, Neil and David discuss:Why company culture is a bogus term. The three key principles of every great team. The answer to the overarching why is more important than the why itself. Understanding who is served by every person on every team in your company. Key Takeaways:Culture is more of a team effort than a company-wide effort. The culture will be built by the habits of the teams, not the trinkets and trappings of an assigned “culture”. We need interpersonal risk-taking in teams. In order to do that, we need to have psychological safety among the team. A team with psychological safety will win far more often than a team that does not have it. The beneficial effects compound for those who do have the trust and respect that comes with psychological safety. Remind your team that everyone is working towards the same goal, regardless of what their role in the organization is. Share the success stories. Show your team how they have made a difference to your clients. "Every great, high-performing team is pretty similar to other ones. Every dysfunctional team might be dysfunctional in its own unique way. But those three similarities, we call them common understanding, psychological safety, and pro-social purpose." — David BurkusGet in touch with David Burkus:Website: https://davidburkus.com/ Book - Best Team Ever: https://davidburkus.com/books/best-team-ever/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/davidburkus Twitter: https://twitter.com/davidburkus Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drdavidburkus LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidburkus/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/davidburkus/ If you buy his book, Email David and let him know you heard him here to get the course for Best Team Ever!Check out David’s Other Books here: https://davidburkus.com/books/Subscribe to his excellent newsletter here: https://davidburkus.com/joinCheck out our previous episodes with David here: Episode 181 - How to Grow Your Network & Be a Super ConnectorEpisode 255 - How to Lead From AnywhereThank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 374. AI in the Legal Space with Seth Price
Today, we welcome back Seth Price to the show! I’ve asked him to come back because he has a ton of information to share with us about some really valuable stuff based on his experience as the founder of a very successful law firm in Washington, D.C., Price Benowitz, and BluShark Digital, which he heads. He’s going to give us the lowdown on ChatGPT, where he thinks AI-based platforms and services in the legal space are going, and what the impact will be. Listen in for some truly key information for the future of AI and digital marketing. In this episode, Neil and Seth discuss:Executing replicable fundamentals over time. Why ChatGPT stands out from prior tech evolutions. The pros and cons of ChatGPT (and how to stay out of trouble when using it). How AI might change intro legal positions. Key Takeaways:ChatGPT is not just the next shiny thing - this is the real thing and it is going to be making change. Start to learn it now. Like in all areas, ChatGPT is data in/data out. It will change how we do business, but it does need oversight. As the data is curated and AI is applied against it, that is when the magic happens. The younger generation has a different interface with technology. They are interacting with it in a different way than lawyers currently are in the legal industry and it is changing how lawyers connect with their clients. "ChatGPT is a co-pilot. It is something that is giving us information that, in certain arenas, is incredibly valuable, and almost seems like magic." — Seth PriceGet in touch with Seth Price:Website: https://blusharkdigital.com/ Website: https://pricebenowitz.com/ Email: seth@pricebenowitz.com Phone: 347-661-9999Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/blusharkdigital LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sethprice/ Listen to the previous episode with Seth here!: https://thelawentrepreneur.com/episodes/ep-229-how-to-stand-out-scale-up-with-digital-marketing-with-seth-price/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 373. Never Lose an Employee Again with Joey Coleman
Today we welcome back an old friend of the show, Joey Coleman! A couple of weeks ago you listened to the classic rewind episode where we talked about Joey’s first book and, today, we welcome him back to talk about his newest book, Never Lose an Employee Again, which drops on June 27, 2023! I’ve said on many occasions that Joey’s first book was the single greatest business development book I’ve ever read - it was the only one that caused me to take massive action. I have no doubt that the same experience is going to happen with his newest book. So listen in and learn how you can create remarkable experiences for your customers, your employees, and yourself. I hope you enjoy! In this episode, Neil and Joey discuss:Creating remarkable experiences. Taking actionable tips to never lose an employee or a customer again. The challenge faced in keeping employees globally and how COVID affected that challenge. Creating a better environment than what you originally experienced. The evolving landscape of remote work, workplace competition, and empathetic leadership. Key Takeaways:Employee experience has a lot of underlying principles and traits that can be applied across all cultures because, at the root, everyone is human. Regardless of the size of your firm, the underlying principles and systems you use should work whether you’re hiring your first employee or your thousandth employee. Post-COVID, the world of employer/employee-relationship has changed dramatically and it will never return to the way it was before. Human interactions within the enclave of the work environment are the culture. It is more than the accouterments around the office and the relationships within the workplace. "Your customer experience is only ever going to be as great as your employee experience. As you improve the customer experience, the employee experience goes up. As the employee experience falls, so does the customer experience." — Joey ColemanGet in touch with Joey Coleman:Website: https://joeycoleman.com/ Book: https://joeycoleman.com/book/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/thejoeycoleman Never Lose an Employee Again: https://www.amazon.com/Never-Lose-Employee-Again-Remarkable/dp/059354238X Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 372. Working with a Legal Recruiter for Your Law Firm Hiring Needs with Jodie Zerega
Today my guest is Jodie Zerega. Jodie is the owner of a legal recruiting firm operating out of Sarasota, Florida. As the name implies, they provide all types of recruiting services in the legal space for attorneys, or law firms looking to hire attorneys, and frankly, for attorneys looking to be hired by law firms. In addition, they recently started a division, catering to the needs of recruiting law firm staff, such as paralegals and administrative staff. As I go around the country listening to people talk about their concerns about the business of law, the recurring theme that I hear over and over again is the difficulty in firing in hiring good help, good attorneys, and good staff. So using a legal recruiting firm, like Zerega Consulting, might solve that issue and that's one of the reasons I wanted to have Jodie on the podcast. So without any further delay, let's learn a little bit about legal recruiting with Jodie Zerega. In this episode, Neil and Jodie discuss:The evolution of what law firms are looking for when hiring an employee. Hot topics in legal recruiting in 2023. Compensation when working with a legal recruiter. Hiring and retaining legal staff. Key Takeaways:Understanding why there is a need is vital for your recruiter to understand so they can look to hire the right person for your firm. You want your recruiter to curate the resume list that you receive. If you want piles of resumes, you can get that yourself without a recruiter. The Attorney Jobs App by Zerega Consulting will allow you to save time, if you are searching for a new opportunity, by providing you only with jobs for attorneys and keeping your information private. If you have a legal staffing problem, you need to look at whether or not the nature of the job you're trying to recruit for is attractive. "It's really become a candidates market, which puts the law firms in a very precarious situation." — Jodie ZeregaGet in touch with Jodie Zerega:Website: https://www.zeregaconsulting.com/ Attorney Jobs App: https://www.zeregaconsulting.com/attorney-jobs Email: jzerega@zeregaconsulting.com Phone: 404-660-3414LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jodie-zerega-8265586/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 371. Effective Marketing for Your Law Firm with John Hinson
Today, my guest is John Hinson who works with Spotlight Branding, a digital marketing agency that focuses primarily on solo and small law firms. I wanted to have John back on the podcast today to talk about some of the issues revolving around how the marketplace has changed as a result of COVID, what has happened to law firms since then, and how that influences their approach to marketing. We then revisit some ideas about marketing, funnels, and all that good stuff. Hope you enjoy! In this episode, Neil and John discuss:Marketing funnels and content loops. Where law firms fall short in their marketing process. Providing valuable education in your monthly newsletter. Actionable tips for better marketing, newsletters, and social media. Key Takeaways:Losing contact with the people already in your network and funnel is throwing business down the drain. Maintaining relationships and contact can help with referrals and repeat business. Turn your marketing funnels into loops - don’t have a start and an ending, keep contacts circling through your content loop. Create an updraft and reenergize your contacts. While automation is great, having a personal touch can shake up the connection and give strength to that contact. People are consuming short-form content. This is where more value can be generated for your law firm and your potential clients. 370. Never Lose a Client Again – with Joey Coleman
This is a classic rerun of my episode with Joey Coleman. Joey Coleman is an author, keynote speaker, advisor, coach, and a former attorney. He wrote a book called “Never Lose a Customer Again” — and if you only read one book this year, it should be that. It was a Wall Street Journal best-seller and lays out a remarkably clear description of the customer experience from when they first came into contact with you to when they become a raving fan of yours. He gives you a structured approach to this process that is incredibly easy to follow, and I think implementing these principles will make a significant difference in your law practice.Get in touch with Joey ColemanWebsite: https://joeycoleman.com/ Book: https://joeycoleman.com/book/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/thejoeycoleman Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 369. Agricultural Estate Planning with Shelby Bothun
Today, my guest is Shelby Bothun. We don't really spend that much time talking about the substitute aspects of law, but Shelby is a lawyer in North Dakota who focuses on estate planning in the agricultural community. And owes it to her roots as an agricultural insurance agent and the fact that her family has been in the agricultural business for a couple of generations now. What I find fascinating is to learn how much I didn't know, frankly, about the agricultural business on a large scale in the Midwest. Many people have this romanticized version of what a farmer or what it means to be a farmer, but really, I should think, more along the lines of a big corporate business owner, because that's what farmers are. This is a fascinating conversation, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. In this episode, Neil and Shelby discuss:Why an agricultural economics degree is so marketable in the Midwest. The importance of service in an industry with identical products. Facilitating the transfer of wisdom, not just assets. Working around the crop seasons to best serve clients. Key Takeaways:There are generational benefits to having a proper succession plan for your agricultural estate. The farm transition is going to be emotional for both parties. Working with an estate planner can help to ease the transition and make it more successful. Get an undergraduate degree in what you are passionate about and want to focus on in law school. In a farming community, land is the most valuable resource. "Most farmers want to leave a legacy. It is a livelihood, it is a career, it is not just a job." — Shelby BothunGet in touch with Shelby Bothun:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shelby-g-bothun-esq-21428316a/ Website: http://www.progressiveag.com/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 368. Creating Routines and Setting Expectations for a Better Law Firm with Mark Rockwell
Today, we welcome back Mark Rockwell to The Law Entrepreneur. What Mark does is help solo and small, firm practitioners. Now he's an attorney by trade, but most of his adult life in business and I think that gives him a little different insight into challenges faced by solo and small firms. Because of that, he brings a different approach to coaching those law practitioners. We have a great conversation today about time tracking, charging what you’re worth, and creating an open and honest environment with both your clients and those working in your law firm. Listen in for some great takeaways to help you run a more successful firm today. In this episode, Neil and Mark discuss:Challenges solo and small firm law firms face. Setting out expectations and scope of work with your client. Keeping on top of your accounts receivable and your time. Tracking time, managing distractions, and avoiding incorrect time reporting. Key Takeaways:Nobody wants to gouge their clients, but if the client understands the value that is created and the work that is involved, they will be more willing to pay you for what you are worth. If you let your AR go too far, you will go from a big, well-paying client to a pro bono client very quickly. Interruptions are destructive to billable time and will be fatal financially. If you do not bill the number of hours in a day that you expected and planned for, you need to understand where that time is going and what activities are pulling you away from that time. Without knowing what those habits and problems are, there will be no change. "At the end of the day, when lawyers aren’t billing enough, it’s a lack of confidence. I believe that in billing and capturing all your time, you have to be confident that you are creating value, the total number of hours that you're going to have billed against this project is going to be met with the acceptance of the client, and they're going to be willing to pay the bill.
