317. Cracking the Code to Attracting Talent with Jonathan Merel
Today, my guest is Jonathan Merel. Jonathan owns a family law practice in the Chicago area that has experienced some pretty phenomenal growth as of late, now reaching 17 attorneys and support staff that are associated with those attorneys having started as a solo practitioner, and really grew as a law firm pretty quickly. One of the things we're going to spend a fair amount of time talking about is how to attract talent to your law firm, because one of the things that most people are complaining about these days is their inability to find qualified candidates for the jobs that they do have open. Jonathan seems to crack that code a little bit. I think there's something to be learned from this interview, and I hope you get something out of it.In this episode, Neil and Jonathan discuss:Growing Jonathan’s firm from a solo firm to a firm of 17 attorneys. How to attract talent to your law firm.Creating a culture where people want to be. The onboarding and transition process. Key Takeaways:Build your book of business from the beginning. You never know if you’re going to want to go on your own or how it can further help in your career even if you stay in big law. As you are learning how to be a lawyer, take note of what you do and don’t want your own practice to be like. A personal one-on-one in an interview is important. You wouldn’t invite them to interview if they weren’t a good attorney, you’re looking to see if they are a good fit for your firm’s culture. You need to take the time to focus on the business, not just in the business. That is how you are going to grow your firm and attract and retain the best talent. "Marketing is not just about targeting clients, it's about targeting talent as well. I believe that by creating a good brand and a culture and an image, that will ultimately attract good talent." — Jonathan Merel Get in touch with Jonathan Merel:Website: https://chicagodivorce.com/ Email: jmerel@merelfamilylaw.com Show: https://www.merelfamilylaw.com/media/podcasts/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathan-merel-6629353/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 316. Investing Across Borders with Lauren Cohen
Today, my guest is Lauren Cohen. Lauren is an attorney originally from Canada, who now is located in South Florida, and licensed to practice law in two countries, which I think is pretty cool. She is the founder of a number of different businesses, all focusing around her primary mission - investing across borders. Her practice areas deal with all the different issues that people who are conducting business across borders have to deal with, whether it be immigration, finance, law, relocation services, business, commercial transactions, and more. Anything having to do or touching upon the transaction of business across international borders is something that Lauren and her team spent a lot of time helping their clients with. It's a niche practice area that is very broad. Seems to be a contradiction of terms, but I think that summarizes it pretty well. In this episode, Neil and Lauren discuss:How Lauren fell into immigration law and created her full service company for immigrating to the US or Canada. The business of practicing law.Being a lawyer running a business versus being an entrepreneur who is not a lawyer. Removing yourself from the day to day running of the firm to build stronger procedures. Key Takeaways:Unless you're working as a lawyer in a firm, where everything is handled for you, you’re going to have to learn to run a business. Through failure you find success. You don’t know what you don’t know and what you do know is less than you think. Collaboration and business relationships can change the game for your law firm. Being in touch and being available can be both a blessing and a curse in your firm. "It's always about collaborating and building trusted relationships and knowing that you don't know everything. You need to be able to say and acknowledge that and bring in team members that complement what you do and can help you to build a stronger, scalable business." — Lauren Cohen Get in touch with Lauren:Twitter: https://twitter.com/eCouncilInc Website: https://laurenesq.com/ Website: https://realestateacrossborders.com/ Email: asklawuren@laurenesq.com Show: https://laurenesq.com/latest-episodes LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ecouncilinc/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/investing_across_borders/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 315. Keys to Productivity with Demir Bentley
Today, my guest is Demir Bentley, a productivity coach! Now, I am the poster child for someone who needs help in becoming more productive. I like to think of myself as productive, but my Achilles’ heel is planning. I am not a good planner. And that is where Demir really shines. This interview to me was personal and mind blowing. He has some really great ideas on how to take that giant leap, just one step at a time. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. In this episode, Neil and Demir discuss:Demir’s journey from a background of burnout and overwhelm to being a productivity coach. Unique challenges the law industry has in regards to productivity. The necessary customizations of solutions and willingness to change. Planning your week to win your week and structuring it as a reward. Key Takeaways:The biggest hangups in the legal community to becoming more productive are the billable hour and the this-is-how-it-is-isms. Leave everything you touch 1% better for just 3 months. And you will be better than you have been in years without realizing it. Making changes will take less time than you think it will - you just need to start. The smallest thing you can do to maximize your productivity is to plan your week every single week. "If you keep working on the things that you're willing to work on, it's just a matter of time before you get the willingness to work on the things you weren't willing to work on." — Demir Bentley Get in touch with Demir Bentley:Website: https://winningtheweek.com/ & https://lifehackmethod.com/ Book: Winning the Week - coming July 12, 2022! https://winningtheweek.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/lifehackbootcamp Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 314. Growing and Marketing Your Firm with Video with Dara Rosenbaum
Today, my guest is Dara Rosenbaum. Dara is one of the founding partners of a firm out of New York called Rosenbaum and Taylor, and they represent individuals and businesses on a variety of legal issues, including contract negotiations and business disputes and all kinds of things having to do with business owners and entrepreneurs and solopreneurs. She counsels and advises them on transactional matters as well, and represents them in litigation and lawsuits. Dara and I met on a video socials website, which is a platform run by a gentleman who was on earlier podcast ours, and she has her own video podcast that she has launched. I wanted to have her on today, and we discuss her journey through the practice of law, the legal space, and how she's become a business owner and a video marketing entrepreneur. In this episode, Neil and Dara discuss:Dara’s evolution from law school to being a business law attorney. The early days of going out with a partner from a larger firm. Preparing to move from a large firm to your own practice. Growing your marketing and branding. Key Takeaways:When going out on your own, there are resources out there to take some of the burden from you as a new owner. Utilizing a PEO service (such as NexFirm) can give you a good grounding as you are learning to go out on your own. As your firm grows and evolves, you will likely need to adjust how the firm is run and the resources you are using to run that firm. Step out of your comfort zone. You never know what you will come to love and how it will grow your business. "We realized, probably much later than many other people, that you need to have an online presence, not just a website. People have to be able to see what you're doing, learn who you are, and find you in places that aren’t necessarily getting to your website somehow." — Dara Rosenbaum Get in touch with Dara Rosenbaum:Website: https://www.rosenbaumtaylor.com/ Compelling Conversations Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/3v66xoV5zZCh9PGSpCtkd4 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4OPbiRUhS_Vc6-9Z7h42CA Twitter: https://twitter.com/RosenbaumTaylo1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Rosenbaum-Taylor-110606327214608/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dara-rosenbaum-b4148012/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rosenbaumtaylorpc/ Reference: Video Socials: https://videosocials.net/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 313. Becoming Superbold with Fred Joyal
Today, my guest is Fred Joyal. Fred is a fascinating individual. His latest book Superbold: From Under Confident to Charismatic in 90 Days, teaches us a systemic way for anyone to radically increase their boldness and confidence to a remarkable level in a very short period of time. You're going to hear how he started out as a very shy person but pushed himself to become bolder. And, as a result, met some amazing people, started successful businesses, and has graduated to the point where he can speak to audiences of 5000 or more with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. He's written two books on marketing and dabbled as a stand up and improv comedian. By his own account, he acted in a few bad movies and some excellent TV commercials and visited over 44 countries around the world. I'm sure you're gonna find this interview pretty interesting, particularly for those of us who might identify as introverts or are shy individuals in the legal practice and maybe want to make some adjustments or some changes there. In this episode, Neil and Fred discuss:What it means to be Superbold (and how anybody can become Superbold regardless of their personality type). Fred’s transformation from wallflower to performer. Fred’s PRIDE method to becoming Superbold. Moving past perfection and into action with intent. Key Takeaways:Shyness is a behavior, not a genetic thing. Stop telling yourself that you are shy. Start asking open ended questions, then don’t go into a long monologue when it is your turn to talk. Be interested, not interesting. Actively listen to everyone that you are communicating with. It is a choice to be embarrassed, it is a choice to be humiliated. 99% of the time bad things only happen because you think it was bad. "It is also very important to understand something that bold people understand is that most people are not thinking about you anywhere near as much as you think. They are thinking about themselves. They go back to themselves very quickly." — Fred JoyalGet in touch with Fred Joyal:Website: https://fredjoyal.com/ Book: geni.us/Superbold Twitter: https://twitter.com/fredjoyal Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/realfredjoyal LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/fredjoyal/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fredjoyal/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 312. Negotiating Your Own Professional Prenuptial Agreement with Jotham Stein
Today, my guest is Jotham Stein. Jotham is a principal of the Law Offices of Jotham Stein, located in California, and he has more than a couple of decades of experience representing entrepreneurs and C-Suite executives in a whole bunch of different types of companies. He also represents board members and investment bankers as well as less senior employees of all different sized companies. He has written a book called Negotiate Like a CEO, and it looks at how all employees can protect themselves with the lessons that he's learned from representing top entrepreneurs and executives, and how you can profit from it as well. I think it's particularly enlightening in terms of the legal space these days, with people hiring and firing and merging and acquiring. So I think it's something that we could all benefit from. In this episode, Neil and Jotham discuss:Why Jotham wrote Negotiate Like a CEO and how it can help all lawyers. The purpose of a PIP (performance improvement plan) and how they are often used. What to look for in an offer letter or in a separation agreement. The importance of leverage in negotiation. Key Takeaways:As the entrepreneurial space has grown and evolved, so too have the legal needs of those in the entrepreneurial space. The most important thing you should look for is how to protect yourself in employment in your offer letter. That includes having a severance agreement argued on day 1 if you do have room to negotiate. There may be a red flag (depending on context) if you get push back when you try to negotiate on your offer letter. Negotiating is the same regardless of what you are negotiating, whether it is a product or yourself as a person. "It’s the concept to protect yourself, to read everything or get a good adviser to read everything, to negotiate with leverage, just like a CEO would negotiate with leverage." — Jotham Stein Get in touch with Jotham Stein:Book: https://negotiatelikeaceo.net/ Website: https://jotham.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jotham-s-stein-7b92474/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 311. Law Firm Lessons from Kobe Bryant with Henry Gereis
Today, my guest is Henry Gereis, and Henry is a criminal defense attorney near Bakersfield, CA who has an interesting journey, having transitioned from family law, ultimately into doing criminal defense work. It's an interesting story about how he attributes a lot of the success that he's had to the fact that he's a huge fan of Kobe Bryant's and learned a lot from Kobe and how Kobe approached his life in terms of being prepared and understanding all the nuances of what he was facing. Henry has taken that approach and applied it to his practice of law. It's a terrific homage to somebody who meant a lot to him and I think you can see it in what he does for his community. In this episode, Neil and Henry discuss:Henry’s transition from being a family law attorney to being a criminal defense attorney. How Kobe Bryant affected Henry’s career path and life. Challenges of being a solo or small-firm practitioner. Helpful tools utilized in Henry’s law practice. Key Takeaways:Every person deserves to be treated with respect and decorum, regardless of where they are from and their walk of life. If you are prepared to the best of your ability, there is no need to be nervous. You do not have to be great at everything. There are many other professionals that are out there to help you run your firm. With everything, break it down into its smallest components and take it one piece at a time. "I like to think of branding as what we represent. I think that empathy, especially in a criminal defense setting, is the missing ingredient in the legal profession. And so we have a slogan, and registered it, it's Client-Centered Caring Council™. And that's what we stand for. That's what we do every day." — Henry Gereis Get in touch with Henry:Website: https://esqaspire.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gereislaw/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gereis.law Twitter: https://twitter.com/gereislLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/henry-gereis-034336121/ Reference: Raise Your Game: High-Performance Secrets from the Best of the Best by Alan Stein, Jr. - https://www.amazon.com/Raise-Your-Game-High-Performance-Secrets/dp/1546082867 Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 310. Finding Your Mindful Return with Lori Mihalich-Levin
Today, my guest is Lori Mihalich-Levin. Laurie is an attorney who, as she likes to say, practices law as a side gig. She's a solo practitioner and also the founder of called Mindful Return. This is a really interesting business organization, course, book, and blog, all about the issues regarding the return to the workplace of parents after parental leave and that more transient dynamic that is associated with going on parental leave. It's a fascinating discussion, I think she's hit on something that is really important in the workplace and is certain to grow by leaps and bounds going forward. So I'm very happy to be able to share with you my conversation with Lori Mihalich-Levin! In this episode, Neil and Lori discuss:How Lori balances practicing law, running Mindful Return, and being a mom to 2 rambunctious boys. What it means to do policy work. The importance of taking care of parents returning to work (that doesn’t have to do with the baby only). Setting boundaries with work. Key Takeaways:There are more practice areas than are talked about in law school. More work than most people know goes into the policy log that is referenced in 30 sections on the evening news. Build in time for micro moments of mindfulness as new parents. Small, intentional changes throughout your day will drastically change how you show up for yourself, your clients, and your children. More and more places have gender neutral leave policies, but it is still not equal. "What I wish is that employers would focus more on conversations around logistics, making fewer assumptions around or just dictating, having open ended conversations, and recognizing that the person who left before they had a child is not the same person who was coming back afterwards." — Lori Mihalich-Levin Get in touch with Lori Mihalich-Levin:Website: https://www.mindfulreturn.com/ Book: https://www.mindfulreturn.com/back-work-after-baby-book/ Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parents-at-work/id1239258343 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lorimihalichlevin/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/mindfulreturn Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 309. HyperDraft for Next Level Document Generation with Sean Greaney
Starting your own practice isn’t something they teach in law school. Join me as I sit down with legal professionals to hear firsthand accounts of just how they did it. Today my guest is Sean Greaney. Sean is in-house counsel for a company called HyperDraft, also the name of the product that they produce, which is a document preparation system for use by attorneys. What sets it apart from most others is its use of artificial intelligence, and a form-based system such that you can dictate how you want the product to look and appear as an output in real-time. I am really excited about this platform. Stick around to the end, to take advantage of a free trial offer that they're extending to all of our listeners. So if you are intrigued by this product, as we've described it on the recording here, give them a call, go on to their website, schedule a demo. And if you mentioned that you heard about them on The Law Entrepreneur, they will offer you a free trial experience! In this episode, Neil and Sean discuss:Sean’s journey through every facet of law in his career and how he ended up with HyperDraft.Taking opportunities even if you aren’t looking for them. How HyperDraft can help your firm with document generation. Allowing your documentation creation system to learn with you. Key Takeaways:Be willing to go to the coffees and lunches, you never know what will come out of those meetings. HyperDraft was created by lawyers for lawyers. Being efficient is always better for law firm financials, regardless of the size of your firm. "Doc generation is a must these days, in my opinion, especially when you're in the solo or small practices, because you can benefit off efficiencies in ways that I don't think big law can go apples to apples on." — Sean GreaneyGet in touch with Sean GreaneyWebsite: https://hyperdraft.ai/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sean-greaney-b822a13/ Go to hyperdraft.ai to get your free demo! 308. A Veteran Manager Starting a Law Firm with Charles Vega
On today’s episode, I interviewed Charles Vega. Charles is an attorney in Daytona Beach, Florida. It’s a bit strange, but we have almost the exact same story. Both Charles and I were in business for multiple years and law is our 3rd or 4th career. We both went to school late in life, started a solo practice, and even right down to the fact that we are both practicing martial artists as well. I almost feel like I’m interviewing myself! You are going to hear how Charles started his solo firm and has since grown it to be the size he wants it to be as he continues to enjoy the ride and go for as long as he can. I am delighted to present to you Charles Vega. In this episode, Neil and Charles discuss:Being an older law student and beginning your law career with a robust work history. Growing a remote law firm.Utilizing past experience to hire the right team members. Enjoying both life and work. Key Takeaways:Seasoned veterans bring their own networks to law firms. Hiring the right talent is important. You are only as strong as the people who work for you. As a lawyer, it is important to know what you want your exit strategy to be and build that in from the beginning. Enjoy where you are now and embrace this time of your life. "Even though I came late in practice, I've known a lot of people and people that know I'm a professional, call me because even though they know I've not been doing it a long time, they'll know that because of my reputation, I'll take care of them and help them resolve their problem." — Charles Vega Get in touch with Charles VegaPhone: 1-800-975-0529Website: https://charlesvegapa.com/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable.
