Episode 187: Amy Eagan, Make Them Adjust To Us

Guest: Amy Eagan, Drury University Head Coach Drury University head coach Amy Eagan joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss how to make your opponent adjust to you. Amy Eagan will enter her second season as the Drury Lady Panthers head coach in 2021-22 and her 13th year as a collegiate head coach. Eagan was named head coach at Drury on April 13, 2020, after serving as an assistant coach for the Lady Panthers in 2019-20. While Eagan inherited a team that had gone 32-0 the year before, the squad graduated two All-Americans including the two-time NCAA-II Player of the Year, Hailey Diestelkamp. She followed that season, working the challenges of a season clouded by the uncertainty of a global pandemic, with an NCAA-II Runner Up finish for the second time in program history. The won their fifth-straight Great Lakes Valley Conference championship, and finished 24-2. The team produced the NCAA-II Player of the Year for a third straight season as junior Paige Robinson was voted as the nation’s top player, and Eagan was named the national Coach of the Year in D-II by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. The Lady Panthers also produced seven Academic All-GLVC performers, and won a GLVC Team Academic Award. Paige Robinson was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American, and was named the GLVC Student-Athlete of the Year in women’s basketball. She will enter this season with a career record of 211-144 (.594). Eagan has been the head coach of teams that have reached three NCAA-II tournaments, one NAIA tournament, and have won three conference championships (two GLVC titles, 2021 with Drury, 2014 with Truman St., and a Midwest Classic title at St. Ambrose in 2007). Eagan came to Drury after a successful tenure as the head coach at Truman State. In six seasons with the Bulldogs, she became the program's all-time leader in career coaching wins and winning percentage posting a mark of 111-62 (.642). Breakdown1:00 - Expectation on Molly Miller Leaving3:00 - Relationship-based7:30 - Roles11:00 - Blending Style14:00 - Building Offense and Defense18:00 - Balancing the Floor21:00 - Transition Fundamentals23:00 - Benefits of Crossing the Nail27:00 - Set Spots on Initial Transition32:00 - Dribble Drive35:00 - Adjustments to the Game39:00 - Value of Personal Growth42:00 - Buy-In45:00 - Advice on Coaches47:00 - ConclusionAmy Eagan’s Bio:Bio: https://drurypanthers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/amy-eagan/1868Twitter: https://twitter.com/AmyEagan Basketball ImmersionWebsite: http://basketballimmersion.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/bballimmersion?lang=enYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/basketballimmersionFacebook: https://facebook.com/basketballimmersionImmersion Videos:Check out all our all-access practice and specialty clinics: https://www.immersionvideos.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Episode 186: Molly Miller, Full-Court Pressure and Playing Uptempo

Guest: Molly Miller, Grand Canyon University Head Coach Grand Canyon University head coach Molly Miller joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss full-court pressure and playing uptempo. Miller holds the highest career winning percentage (.892) of any NCAA men's or women's basketball coach at Division I, II or III levels with at least five years of experience. The two-time Division II Coach of the Year ended her Drury career with the DII national runner-up in 2019 and an undefeated, top-ranked 2020 team when the national tournament was canceled because of COVID-19. Miller made an immediate impact at GCU by guiding her Lopes to the program's first WAC Tournament championship game appearance. She did it by instituting her style of full-court pressure defense and uptempo offense. In 2020-21, GCU ranked second nationally for steals (13.4 per game) and turnover margin (plus-8.4 per game) while also coming in fourth for turnovers forced (23.3 per game). Miller maintained Drury's tradition upon becoming head coach at age 28 and she ascended the program to reach the 2019 Division II Final Four and post a 32-0 record in 2019-20, when the Panthers were ranked No. 1 every week in the Division II poll. If an undefeated mark does not state Drury’s dominance under Miller enough, the Panthers also led Division II in scoring margin for her last two seasons there. Drury won by 27.9 points per game in 2018-19 and 28.5 per game in 2019-20. Breakdown1:00 - Buy-In5:00 - Starting with Defense8:00 - Building Up Drills12:00 - Getting the Ball Over Halfway14:00 - Full Court Pressure Preference17:00 - Run Jump20:00 - Randomness21:00 - Using Different Terminologies24:00 - The Tagging Concept26:00 - Attacking the Weak Side29:00 - Tools for Better Switching32:00 - Managing Substitution35:00 - Analytics that She Valued37:00 - Unorthodox Approach in Recruiting39:00 - Defense is the Priority42:00 - Unstructured Offensive Possessions47:00 - Scouting Reports50:00 - Inbound Set Plays54:00 - ConclusionMolly Miller’s Bio:Bio: https://gculopes.com/staff-directory/molly-miller/573Twitter: https://twitter.com/MollyMiller33 Basketball ImmersionWebsite: http://basketballimmersion.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/bballimmersion?lang=enYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/basketballimmersionFacebook: https://facebook.com/basketballimmersionImmersion VideosCheck out all our all-access practice and specialty clinics: https://www.immersionvideos.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Episode 185: Scott Davenport, Pressing On Offense

Guest: Scott Davenport, Bellarmine University Head Coach Bellarmine University head coach Scott Davenport joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss pressing on offense with the pass. Scott Davenport became the 11th coach in Bellarmine University men's basketball history, and in six years took Bellarmine all the way to the top by leading the Knights to the 2011 NCAA Division II Tournament national championship. For his efforts, he was named national Coach of the Year by two different organizations: the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the Division II Bulletin. Davenport’s career record of 378-117 (through the 2020-21 season) ranks him as Bellarmine’s all-time winningest coach both in terms of total wins and winning percentage (.763). In the 2020-21 season, Davenport guided the Knights to a highly successful transition as an NCAA Division I school. Bellarmine sported a 14-8 record overall and earned an invitation to a national postseason tournament (CBI) after falling just one game shy of capturing the ASUN Conference regular-season crown. The national basketball community took notice of the Knights’ success, and Davenport was nominated for the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Award and the Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year, which recognizes coaches from mid-major conferences. At the Division II level, Davenport experienced nearly unequaled success and was a four-time Great Lakes Valley Conference Coach of the Year. His teams won five GLVC Tournament titles and won or shared six regular-season conference titles. Breakdown1:00 - Passing, Passing and More Passing5:00 - Making Defense Uncomfortable8:00 - Passing and What Else13:30 - Good Shot Percentage17:00 - Passing Stats25:00 - Value of Ball Reversal30:00 - Teaching Shot Selection33:00 - Balance and Catching to Shoot37:00 - Passing Drills40:00 - No Floaters and Cut to Score44:00 - Inside Out Advantage47:00 - Free Throw Blockouts50:00 - Valuing Possessions55:00 - Transition to D11:00:00 - ConclusionScott Davenport’s Bio:Bio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Davenport Twitter: https://twitter.com/Bellarminehoops Basketball ImmersionWebsite: http://basketballimmersion.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/bballimmersion?lang=enYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/basketballimmersionFacebook: https://facebook.com/basketballimmersionBetOnline Website:Website: www.betonline.agBest in the West Video SeriesBest in the West Website: http://bestinthewestclinic.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Episode 179: Kevin McGuff, 5 Out Offensive Concepts, and Teaching Points

Guest: Kevin McGuff, Ohio State Heach Coach Ohio State head coach Kevin McGuff joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss their 5 Out offensive concepts and teaching points. Kevin McGuff’s 19-year head coaching career consists of nine years at Xavier University (214-73) and two years at the University of Washington (41-26) before arriving at Ohio State. He holds a .698 overall winning percentage with a career mark of 426-184. His Ohio State teams have broke single-season scoring records and went from the #52 scoring offense in the first year and #10 in scoring offense in the second year with 5 out an offense that we are going to discuss now. In his first season, McGuff led a relatively young and inexperienced group to a 17-18 record against a schedule strength that consistently ranked in the top 3 throughout the year. In his second season, he guided Ohio State to a 24-11 overall record, a runner-up finish in the Big Ten Tournament, and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes took another step towards national prominence in season three as they earned a No. 2 seed and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The 2016-17 season was yet again, a step in the right direction as the team made it back to the NCAA Sweet 16, marking the first back-to-back trips since 1988 and 1989. The Buckeyes also claimed their 15th Big Ten Regular Season Championship, finishing with a record of 15-1. In 2017-18, McGuff and the Buckeyes won both the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles and hosted first and second-round NCAA Tournament games for the second time in four seasons.  Prior to his arrival at Ohio State, McGuff, a Saint Joseph’s College (Ind.) graduate, went 41-26 in two years at Washington with two berths in the WNIT. In his first season, McGuff led the Huskies to a 20-14 finish — its first 20-win season since 2003 — and a trip to the quarterfinals of the WNIT. In the WNIT, Washington went on a memorable run, beating Cal Poly, Utah, and Oregon State before falling to San Diego in the quarterfinals. It was the first winning season for UW since 2006-07 and the first postseason appearance since 2009-10. In his final season, his Huskie squad finished 21-12 with a second-round finish in the WNIT. Prior to his stint in Washington, McGuff was the head coach at Xavier for nine seasons. As the head coach of the Musketeers, McGuff compiled a 214-73 record and set a school record for most wins in program history, reaching the postseason in each season he coached. His five consecutive NCAA tournament appearances were also a school record. During that stretch, McGuff’s Xavier teams were consistently the class of the Atlantic-10, sporting a 106-28 record in nine seasons. In his last two seasons, Xavier went undefeated (14-0) in the A-10 play. McGuff led the Musketeers to four A-10 tournament championships, including his final year at Xavier. That season, his team posted a 28-3 record (.903 winning percentage) and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament. McGuff made the NCAA tournament six times overall as the Xavier coach. His pinnacle was an Elite Eight appearance in the 2009-10 season, where his team was one missed layup away from the Final Four. Breakdown1:00 - Foundation of Dribble Drive5:00 - Dribble Drive8:00 - Attacking The Basket with Size Matchup11:00 - Automatic Actions16:00 - Teaching Points of Staggers21:00 - Relentless Pace Maker or Miss25:00 - Stagger Dribble Handoffs29:00 - Ball Movement32:00 - Offensive Rebounding36:00 - Runway Type of Effect39:00 - Type of Offensive Systems44:00 - Use Shot Clocks in Practice47:00 - Teaching Points to His Players50:00 - ConclusionKevin McGuff’s Bio:Bio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_McGuffTwitter: https://twitter.com/coachmcguffBasketball ImmersionWebsite: http://basketballimmersion.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/bballimmersion?lang=enYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/basketballimmersionFacebook: https://facebook.com/basketballimmersionBetOnline Website:Website: www.betonline.agBest in the West Video SeriesBest in the West Website: http://bestinthewestclinic.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
