He led the program to its second-ever MEAC title in 2021 and an NCAA Tournament First Four win over Appalachian State. Jones’ overall head coaching mark now stands at 142-119, including 92-32 in MEAC play. The 2019 MEAC Coach of the Year, Jones signed a five-year contract extension following the NCAA Tournament appearance, keeping him at the helm of the program through 2027-28. It marked the first time NSU won both the regular season and tournament titles in the same year. The Spartans went on to defeat Appalachian State, the only current MEAC school to win two games in the NCAA Tournament. The program was named the HBCU Large School National Champion by the Black College Sports Network (BCSN). Jones was named the MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Coach and the HBCU Co-Coach of the Year by HBCU All-Stars LLC/CBS Sports. He was a finalist for three CollegeInsider awards: Ben Jobe (top minority coach), Hugh Durham (top mid-major coach) and Skip Prosser (success on the court and integrity off the court). NSU went 17-8 overall in 2020-21, his seventh .500 or better overall record in eight years as head coach.  Breakdown1:00 - Regular Season Success4:00 - Guarantee Games8:00 - Competing with Imperfect Roster11:00 - Communication and Possession15:00 - Triggers17:00 - Number of Possessions20:30 - Floppy Defense23:00 - Full Court Pressure25:30 - Technical and Tactical29:30 - Ball Screen Defense32:00 - Within His Zone Defense35:30 - Recruiting39:00 - Play on Turnovers42:00 - Other Influences on Him44:30 - A Great Person46:00 - From Press Break Into His Offense48:00 - Ball Screens50:00 - Teaching Decision Making52:00 - ConclusionRobert Jones’ Bio:Bio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Jones_(basketball,_born_1979)Website: https://twitter.com/nsucoachjonesBasketball ImmersionWebsite: http://basketballimmersion.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/bballimmersion?lang=enYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/basketballimmersionFacebook: https://facebook.com/basketballimmersionBetOnline Website:Website: www.betonline.agBest in the West Video SeriesBest in the West Website: http://bestinthewestclinic.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Episode 172: Brooke Wyckoff, Moms in Coaching

Guest: Brooke Wyckoff, Florida State Associate Head Coach Florida State associate head coach Brooke Wyckoff joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss moms in coaching and serving as an interim head coach. Wyckoff was the Interim Head Coach for the 2020-21 year as Sue Sem Rau took a one-year leave of absence. The result was leading Florida State to its eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and a 4th place finish in the ACC and earned a Top-4 seed despite being picked eighth in the ACC preseason coaches poll. Since the ACC added Louisville in 2014 and set its current group of 15 teams, the 2020-21 Seminoles are the only team in the league to be picked as low as eighth in the ACC preseason coaches poll and finish with a Top-4 seed. Wyckoff has sparked the rise of the Florida State women’s basketball program as a standout player, as an assistant coach, and as the interim coach. She was a Florida State women’s basketball standout player on the court from 1997 to 2001. She joined Sue Semrau’s revamped staff beginning in the 2011-12 season. Through 10 seasons, Wyckoff’s tremendous results in defensive game planning, coaching the post players, recruiting, scouting, and other areas resulted in a reward: Being named the team’s associate head coach on May 1, 2018. In her five seasons of taking over the defense, FSU’s sub-60 points allowed in three of the past six years mark the only three times the program has surrendered less than 60 in a season.  In 2014, Brooke co-founded an organization called Moms in Coaching. This is a support group for mothers who are coaching but are unsure if they can be full-time coaches and full-time moms. Without a doubt, Wyckoff was one of the greatest Seminoles ever to wear the Garnet and Gold on the hardwood before playing nine seasons in the WNBA. Wyckoff played in the WNBA from 2001 to 2009, competing for the Orlando Miracle, the Connecticut Sun, and the Chicago Sky. Breakdown1:00 - Head Coaching Role4:00 - Gratitude9:00 - Debrief Session12:00 - Leave of Absence15:00 - Concept of Mentorship17:30 - Having Kids at Practice21:00 - Breastfeeding and Health27:00 - Removing Mom's Guilt33:00 - Strategies to Keep Women on Coaching36:00 - Former Players on Coaching41:00 - Women Sport Coaches45:00 - Interviews47:30 - ESPN Ratings on Women's Basketball50:00 - Comparison of Men's and Women's Basketball54:30 - Why Women Not Retained on Coaching57:00 - ConclusionBrooke Wyckoff’s Bio:Bio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooke_WyckoffTwitter: https://twitter.com/coachbrookefsuBasketball ImmersionWebsite: http://basketballimmersion.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/bballimmersion?lang=enYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/basketballimmersionFacebook: https://facebook.com/basketballimmersionBetOnline Website:Website: www.betonline.agBest in the West Video SeriesBest in the West Website: http://bestinthewestclinic.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Episode 170: Karl Smesko, Offensive System and Shooting Psychology

Guest: Karl Smesko, Florida Gulf Coast Head Coach  Florida Gulf Coast head coach Karl Smesko joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss his offensive system, shooting psychology and the things that helped him become one of the most successful coaches in women's college basketball history. Karl Smesko’s resume sits among the best all-time in NCAA Division I women’s basketball as he enters his 22nd season on the sideline in 2020-21, including his 19th with the Green and Blue. On pace to reach 600 career wins faster than legendary coaches such as Pat Summitt and Tara VanDerveer, Smesko has compiled a 554-122 record (.820) in his career, which ranks him as the third-winningest active Division I head coach behind Geno Auriemma (1,091-142, .885) and Kim Mulkey (604-101, .857). Furthermore, he passed VanDerveer (1,094-253, .812) in 2017-18 to become the fifth-winningest Division I head coach of all-time – behind Auriemma, Leon Barmore (576-87, .869), Mulkey and Summit (1,098-208, .841). If that isn’t enough, he is the 10th-winningest active head coach across all divisions, as well as the 12th-winningest such coach all-time. Smesko has the Eagles on pace to shatter the NCAA's all-time Division I winning percentage record by the end of the 2020-21 season as his team is one of only two in the nation along with Tennessee (.801) with at least an .800 all-time winning percentage. In fact, FGCU is 493-95 (.838) since the program’s inception in 2002-03, which is easily the best winning percentage in the nation and also ahead of third-place UConn (.795), but the NCAA requires at least 10 years as a Division I program, and FGCU's four reclassification years (2007-11) do not count towards the 10-year minimum. Thus, Smesko and the Green and Blue will have to wait just a little longer to be recognized as the winningest Division I women's basketball program in NCAA history. Breakdown1:00 - 3-Point Shooting Philosophy4:30 - Isolation and Space7:00 - Knowing Own Strengths10:00 - Getting Players in Space and Attack13:00 - Ideas on Horizontal and Vertical Spacing16:30 - Drive to Score19:30 - The Concept of Waiting23:00 - Convergence Concept27:00 - Incorporating Stars on his Philosophy29:00 - Player Development33:00 - Isolated Skills Training for Shooting37:00 - Art fo Coaching40:00 - Importance of Shot Release44:00 - 3-Point Shooting48:30 - Offensive Rebounding51:00 - Turnover Battle54:00 - Hiring Former Players as Assistants57:00 - Advice for Other CoachesKarl Smesko’s Bio:Bio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_SmeskoTwitter: https://twitter.com/fgcucoachsmeskoBasketball ImmersionWebsite: http://basketballimmersion.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/bballimmersion?lang=enYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/basketballimmersionFacebook: https://facebook.com/basketballimmersionBetOnline Website:Website: www.betonline.agBest in the West Video SeriesBest in the West Website: http://bestinthewestclinic.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
