Guest: Travis Steele, Xavier University Head Coach Xavier University head coach Travis Steele joins the Basketball Podcast to share his insights on what happens from one game to the next game during the season. Steele is 51-37 in three seasons, including a 13-8 mark in the COVID-shortened season of 2020-21. Steele led XU to a 19-13 record in the 2019-20 season, which was cut short prior to postseason play by the COVID-19 pandemic. Steele was a finalist for the Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top first-year head coach in Division I. Steele, who finished 19-16 in his first season as the Xavier head coach, led XU to eight wins in its last 11 games. All of the opponents for those 11 games were in either the NCAA Tournament or NIT fields, including seven road and neutral site games. Prior to being named head coach Steele spent the previous 10 seasons at Xavier, including nine on the staff of his predecessor, Chris Mack. Steele has been a part of nine NCAA Tournament teams at Xavier, including five teams that reached at least the Sweet 16. The 2017-18 team won Xavier’s first Big East Regular Season Championship, a school-record final AP ranking of No. 3 and the first NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed in school history. Former Xavier head coach Sean Miller hired Steele prior to the 2008-09 season as Xavier’s Director of Basketball Operations. Mack promoted Steele to assistant coach after he took over the program prior to the 2009-10 season. Steele was promoted to Associate Head Coach following the 2015-16 season. Prior to Xavier, Steele worked on the staff at Indiana. He joined the Hoosiers in August of 2006, taking on the duties of the video coordinator. Guest: George Galanopoulos, Texas Legends NBA G-League Head CoachTexas Legends NBA G-League head coach George Galanopoulos joins the Basketball Podcast to share his insights on defense, ball screen concepts, and coaching internationally and in the G-League. Galanopoulos was a member of the Legends coaching staff for the 2016-17 season serving as an assistant before earning a call-up to the Dallas Mavericks. The 2016-17 season saw the Legends earn the most wins to that point in franchise history and earn a record five NBA Call-Ups. He spent two seasons as a video coordinator for the Mavericks and is currently on the bench with the Summer League team in Las Vegas. His first role with the Legends came out of an internship with the Mavericks as well when he went from player development intern in Dallas to assistant coach in Frisco. In 2017, Galanopoulos was named Uganda National Team Head Coach, a position that he still holds. He has helped spark great success for the Uganda program as they compete for their place in African and FIBA basketball. Along with G League, NBA, and FIBA international, Galanopoulos’ resume includes collegiate experience. While at Indiana University, Galanopoulos worked with the Hoosiers’ men’s basketball team, which helped propel him to his first position with the NBA G League’s Bakersfield Jam. After the Jam experience, Galanopoulos then ventured overseas to coach in New Zealand’s NBL, returning to the States the following March hungry for another opportunity in the NBA. Having previously interned under Mike Procopio at legendary trainer Tim Grover’s Attack Athletics in Chicago, Galanopoulos reconnected with his old boss, now a player development coach with the Mavericks spearheading their expansive internship program. Guest: George Karl, One of the All-Time Winningest Coaches in NBA History One of the all-time winningest coaches in NBA history George Karl joins the Basketball Podcast to share his basketball coaching insights from a legendary coaching career. The 2012-13 NBA Coach of the Year, George Karl most recently served as head coach of the Sacramento Kings from 2015 to 2016. Throughout his career, Karl collected 1,175 wins over 22 winning seasons with a .588 winning percentage. He also led his teams to 22 postseason appearances including the NBA Finals in 1996 with Seattle. Karl’s NBA coaching career has included time with the Cleveland Cavaliers (1984-86), Golden State Warriors (1986-88), Seattle SuperSonics (1992-98), Milwaukee Bucks (1998-2003), the Nuggets (2005-13), and the Kings (2015-16). While with the Denver Nuggets, Karl became the seventh NBA coach to record 1,000 career wins.  Karl was a standout high school star who was recruited to play at the University of North Carolina. In four seasons at Chapel Hill, Karl earned All-ACC honors three times and was selected by the New York Knicks in the fourth round of the 1973 NBA Draft. Karl made his head coaching debut for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1984, and would go on to coach 1,999 games for the Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Seattle SuperSonics, Milwaukee Bucks, Denver Nuggets, and Sacramento Kings. 680 of those games were for his hometown Nuggets.During Karl's career, his teams advanced to the playoffs 22 times in 27 seasons, making three appearances in the conference finals and one trip to the NBA Finals. On 17 May 2007 he returned to coaching the franchise for a third spell, after the dismissal of Tom Hancock. Guest: Fred Hoiberg, Nebraska Head Coach Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss insights from the NBA and NCAA that can help your coaching. Fred Hoiberg brought a distinguished resume to Lincoln that includes four years as an NBA front office executive, four years as an NBA head coach, and five years at Iowa State, where he orchestrated the biggest turnaround in Big 12 history in 2011-12 and guided the school to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Following his 10-year NBA playing career, Hoiberg worked in the front office for the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves, serving as assistant general manager before being promoted to vice president of basketball operations. He left the Timberwolves to get into coaching, accepting the head job at Iowa State, his alma mater. Hoiberg led the Cyclones to four NCAA Tournament appearances and a pair of Big 12 Tournament championships in his five seasons at the school. Guest: Ulric Maligi, Adrian Autry and Joel Justus In this week's coaching conversation, three power five assistant coaches, Ulric Maligi, Joel Justus and Adrian Autry join the Basketball Podcast to discuss roles, responsibilities and being the best assistant basketball coach you can be. Adrian Autry Adrian Autry returned to his alma mater Syracuse when he was named an assistant coach prior to the 2011-12 season. In March of 2017, Autry was promoted to associate head coach. Autry embarked on a coaching career in January 2006 when he was hired as associate head coach at Bishop Ireton Catholic High School (Va.). He became AAU basketball coach with Nova United in April 2006, leading the 14-Under team and then the 15-Under squad. In September 2007, he became assistant basketball coach at Paul VI High School (Va.). He was named an assistant coach on the AAU Triple Threat squad, working with the 17-Under team, in 2008. He moved into the collegiate ranks in 2008 when he was hired by then-head coach Seth Greenburg as director of basketball operations at Virginia Tech. He was later promoted to an assistant coach post. Autry started 116-of-121 games in four seasons with the Orange, a stretch that began in 1990 and ended in 1994. Autry still ranks fifth in career assists (631) and sixth in career steals (217) at Syracuse. Autry has strong, deep ties in the Northeast, particularly in the DC area, Canada and Upstate New York. Among the players he’s recruited include Chris McCullough, Tyler Ennis, Jerami Grant and a host of others. Joel Justus Joel Justus joined Arizona State's staff in May of 2021 after working the previous seven seasons at Kentucky, including the past five as the assistant coach. He previously worked as the director of analytics and as the special assistant to the head coach. Justus came to UK after serving as the head coach at Davidson Day High School in Davidson, North Carolina. In both years at the helm, he guided the Patriots to the Elite Eight in the state tournament. Prior to his time at Davidson Day, Justus served as the head boys' basketball coach at Woodberry Forest School in Woodberry, Virginia, from 2008-12. During his time at Woodberry Forest, he guided his team to the Virginia Prep League regular-season championship in 2010 while advancing to the Virginia Prep League championship game in consecutive years, a first in more than two decades. Justus has spent time in college basketball as an assistant coach at Elon University from 2004-08, where he helped guide the Phoenix to a Northern Division title in 2006 and the Southern Conference championship game in 2008. While at Kentucky, Justus played a significant role in their recruiting success, recruiting a number of five-star recruits, including Bam Adebayo, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Immanuel Quickley, Keldon Johnson and a host of others. Ulric Maligi An assistant coach under Chris Beard at Texas Tech for the previous two seasons, Ulric Maligi enters his first year as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at The University of Texas. Maligi brings 14 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Texas staff. Maligi worked as the national scouting director for John Lucas Enterprises in Houston for one year (2015-16). He spent three seasons (2012-15) as an assistant coach under legendary college and NBA head coach Larry Brown at SMU. Maligi worked as an assistant coach at the University of Houston for two seasons (2010-12). Prior to his time at Houston, Maligi spent three seasons (2007-10) as an assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin. Maligi accepted the job of assistant coach at UTA for the 2006-07 season when he was 21 years old, making him the youngest Division I assistant coach in the country at the time. He began his coaching career as the head manager during his undergraduate time at Howard University. Maligi has made his mark as a recruiter at every coaching stop. His strong relationships in Texas have led to success there, but also nationally. Guest: Bart Lundy, Queen’s University Head Coach Queen's University head coach Bart Lundy joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss how to run boot camps and to create margins. Bart Lundy enters the ninth season of his second stint at the Queen’s University of Charlotte, and his 14th year overall, as the winningest coach in Queens Basketball history. After leading his team to a sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in 2020-21, Lundy holds a record at Queens of 303-99 (.754 win pct.) and an overall coaching record of 399-186 (.682 win pct.) in 19 seasons as a head coach in NCAA Division I and Division II. Lundy first took over the Queen’s program at the age of 25 after helping then-head coach Dale Layer as an assistant for two years. In his first stint as head coach (1998-2003), Lundy took the Royals to their first regional title and Elite Eight appearance in 2001 and followed the success with a trip to the national semifinals in 2003. Three times in the five-year span Lundy’s teams set the school record for wins in a season. In his 11 years leading the Royals, Lundy has guided Queens to all four of its Elite Eight appearances, eight NCAA Tournament berths, five conference regular-season titles, and two conference tournament titles. Lundy was also named Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year in 2000-2001, Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2003, and has coached one National Player of the Year, three conference players of the year, 13 first-team all-conference selections, and all seven All-Americans in program history. Under Lundy’s direction, from Nov. 24, 2015 – Dec. 31, 2019, Queens spent 65 consecutive weeks ranked in the coaches’ poll (1,498 days), the longest such streak in program history. Lundy returned to Queens after a one-year stint at The University of North Texas (2012-13), where he served as an assistant to first-year head coach Tony Benford and helped develop first-round NBA draft pick, Tony Mitchell. Prior to North Texas, Lundy coached at Marquette University where he assisted head coach Buzz Williams for three years (2009-2012). Guest: Jeff Linder, University of Wyoming Head Coach University of Wyoming head coach Jeff Linder joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss how to minimize three-point attempts, free throws, and offensive rebounds.  Jeff Linder led the Pokes to a 14-11 overall record in his first season. The Pokes went 6-1 in non-conference play including a road win over an Elite Eight team in Oregon State. Wyoming won six total road games on the season for the most away from Laramie since the 2012-13 season. UW also had a winning record on the road since the 2000-01 season. The Cowboys featured the top offense in the Mountain West in Linder’s first season. He revamped the Cowboy offense to averaging 76.5 points per game. Wyoming also led the MW in three-point field goals per game at 10.1. The Pokes ranked No. 12 in the nation in three-point field goals per game as well. Jeff Linder was previously an assistant coach at Emporia State, Midland, Weber State, San Francisco, and Boise State from 2001 to 2016. Linder posted an impressive 80-50 (.615) record in four seasons at Northern Colorado. He was named the Big Sky Coach of the Year during the 2018-19 season leading the Bears to 15 conference wins for a program record. The Bears tied that record of 15 conference wins again in the 2019-20 season. Over the last three seasons, Linder led UNC to the most wins during a three-year stretch in program history, with 69 wins. The Bears also finished in the top-100 of the NCAA NET Rankings. He also helped lead Northern Colorado to its first postseason title in 2017-18, as the Bears won the College Invitational Tournament. It marked the first postseason title for any Colorado school since the 1940 season. It was also the first postseason title for a team from the Big Sky Conference. During the 2017-18 campaign, UNC won a school-record 26 games on their way to the CIT Championship. The Bears finished the season ranked in the top-100 of the RPI. Prior to his time at Northern Colorado, Linder spent six seasons at Boise State with the last three years serving as associate head coach of the Broncos.
