#340 Yoga Strong, Yoga Fit - Sabrena Jo
Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm host Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode 340. Today's show is brought to you by GlutaDose. Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We'll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo, who'll join us in just a minute. But, by way of introduction, Sabrena Jo, of course, is a favorite with our Not Old Better audience and is the American Council on Exercise, Director of Science and Research Content. Sabrena Jo, about some fascinating research which suggests that yoga is as good as it gets when it comes to getting great exercise, stretching, fitness and even strengthening us, improving our functional ability significantly. The experts and the research prove the when you do yoga poses, you're putting your body in positions and orientations that you ultimately have to support with your muscles. So, you're lifting weights, and you're not using weight machines, deadlifts or dumbbells, but getting the same results. Who knew…??? I've learned a lot about yoga as a form of functional fitness that moves your body in the ways it was designed to move to help ensure that it keeps functioning correctly. For example, in yoga, you use both large and small muscles and advance in many directions (twisting, arcing, etc.), not just back and forth on a one-dimensional plane, as in the forward-back motion of a bicep curl. And, regular yoga practice can reduce your risk of injury and condition your body to perform better at things you have to do every day: walk, sit, twist, bend, and lift groceries…that's what the research shows. Here to share that specific research is Sabrena Jo, Director of Science and Research Content from the American Council on Exercise. Sabrena Jo will explain the research, why it's essential, which yoga poses are best for developing strength, balance, and fitness. While the most important thing is to find a form of exercise you love and can see yourself doing as a lifelong habit, I encourage my clients to try new and different forms of exercise continually. If you include many types of workout techniques, you'll continue to test and push your body in different ways, and you'll keep growing as a fitness enthusiast and as an individual. As Sabrena Jo always says, most of all, enjoy yourself, and this is a way to do that! I'm very excited about this subject and the research, so let's welcome back to the program, via internet phone, ACE Director of Science and Research Content, Sabrena Jo. Thanks to GlutaDose for sponsoring today's show. #337 Mike Leigh - Director, 'Peterloo'
Mike Leigh - Director, 'Peterloo' Movies for Adults Interview Series Welcome to the Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #337. As part of our Movie Reviews for adults series, our guest today is someone well known to our Not Old Better Show audience, director Mike Leigh. We're listening to a bit of the music from Mike Leigh's new film, Peterloo, and we'll be hearing from Mike Leigh in just a moment. Mike Leigh has been a cheeky iconoclast since he burst on the scene in the 1970s with some very fine television work and films like Nuts in May and Abigail's Party all of which confirmed his talent. Since then he has made numerous films that have won the Palme d'Or in Cannes the Golden Lion in Venice, plus he's been nominated for the Academy Award seven times for films like Naked, Vera Drake, Secrets and Lies, All or Nothing, and Mr. Turner, films I know every one of you has seen at least one of them. In my mind, these are some of the absolute essential films of the last 25 years. The Peterloo Massacre was a defining moment in British democracy which also played a significant role in the founding of The Guardian newspaper, among many other class changes… As always Mike Leigh has made a smart intelligent film full of insights and drama bringing to the screen this very overlooked incident close to its 200th anniversary so, please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, director Mike Leigh. #333 The Next Mormons - Dr. Jana Riess
The Next Mormons - Dr. Jana Riess Opinions Issues & Entertainment Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #333. As part of our continuing series on opinion and issues facing families today, we're talking religion. Yes, religion. We've talked a lot about it before, and you can be assured, we'll talk about it again. No "redirecting the topic here, to be subtly polite." You know what I mean, if someone brings it up, we're taught to be polite by shifting the conversation to something unrelated, without being too obvious. Only, I tend to think it's VERY OBVIOUS. For example, imagine Uncle Bob says something like, "kids these days just aren't going to church. It's all that rock n' roll they're listening to. Right?" And, you might follow up with "speaking of kids, I've been meaning to ask: how's your son doing at college?" Sheesh…not subtle at all. So, we'll dispense with that for today, and we'll dispense with any "boomer vs millennial" myths, and talk about real research. Today, my guest is a research scientist, Dr. Jana Riess. Dr. Riess is the author of the new book "The Next Mormons: How Millennials Are Changing the LDS Church." Religion, often divisive, and polarizing, but important to us, important to families, and important to you, The Not Old Better Show audience. I will say, this is an important subject to me and my family. I don't typically discuss, as I prefer these shows to be about the guests, but I, personally, am more than just a bit "bought in." How so? Well, I'm the husband to a late in life convert to the Church, I'm the father to a gay man, and I'm the father of a current LDS Church missionary. Plus, of course, I'm a boomer. I truly hit the sweet spot, and feel this subject daily, need to know more about it, living it, and loving my Church. What will come in the days ahead for the Church, knowing of these questions, and how best to answer young people, is what we'll learn today from Dr. Riess. That, of course, is our guest today, Dr. Jana Riess. Dr. Riess' new book, The Next Mormons: How Millennials Are Changing The LDS Church, is based on Dr. Riess' major national study which shows how millennial Mormons are changing, even leaving, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dr. Jana Riess is a columnist and former Publisher's Weekly religion reviews editor and let's welcome her to The Not Old Better Show, via internet phone. The book is available starting today at Amazon ( Talk About Better™ The Not Old Better Show on Radio & Podcast! Hosted by Ausha. See ausha.co/privacy-policy for more information.
