Quotes:###
And when we're talking about autonomy within companies, you should understand that you're trying to give every person the most autonomy they can handle at a given point in time ….. And so what you're looking at saying is how much autonomy can you handle right now? And how do we put you in a situation where the bits where you don't have autonomy over what you're learning from so that your ability to tackle larger and more difficult things grows over time? And what tends to happen with autonomy as we don't have that conversation? So when somebody feels that they don't have appropriate decision-making power, they turn around and say, ‘You're not giving me autonomy ‘like it's necessarily a bad thing rather than the better conversation of ‘what level autonomy should you have at this point and how can we help you grow that level of autonomy’” - Andy Walker, alphalist CTO podcast #91
One of my rules of thumb as to whether I'm functioning as a leader was,” How many decisions do I have to make?” And my goal is to never have to make a single decision. This is a futile goal, because that's never going to happen. But it makes me think about how do I push the decision to the lowest part of the hierarchy as possible, so that the people closest to the work are able to have agency over what they're doing. And this should be business as usual. And in fact, if you're working on something, and you're responsible for getting it done, you should have decision-making power over 99 percent of the things in front of you. The interesting case is the edge case for that 1 percent where what you're working on may be mutually exclusive to another team. ” - Andy Walker, alphalist CTO podcast #91

Product Discovery for Engineers (and CTOs)
Invest your engineering resources better by truly understanding the core problem your product needs to solve with this CTO podcast featuring Bob Moesta, co-architect of the Jobs to be Done Theory, who has developed and launched over 3500 products.
As an engineer-turned-product-guru, Bob’s explanation of Product Discovery will delight your nerd brain 🧠 (complete with references to set theory, push-pull forces, and the problem space) while being super practical 🔧about the challenges CTOs are dealing with (like scope creep and trade offs).
Listen to find out:
Why “Build and They Will Come” is a Myth 🫣
SAM (Serviceable Addressable Market) vs. TAM
Why engineers should be involved in product discovery 🧐
Customer Interviews: Who to Ask and What to Ask
Hypothesis Building Research vs Hypothesis Proving Research
Why tradeoffs should be influenced by the opinions of those who already bought 🫠 (and not engineers who ran out of time)

BROUGHT TO YOU BY: Pentalog, WorkGenius and Sipgate
About Bob Moesta:
BOB MOESTA is a teacher, builder, entrepreneur, and co-founder at The Re-Wired Group, a design firm in Detroit, Michigan. Bob has developed & launched over 3,500 products and sold everything from design services, software, and houses to consumer electronics, and investment services. He’s an adjunct lecturer at Kellogg School at Northwestern University and the author of Choosing College, Demand Side Sales 101, and Learning to Build.
QUOTES:
"Well, if you think about it, 70% of our life cycle costs are fixed in the first 10% of how we develop and set up a new platform.
And yet we spend all the money usually on the backend. And we don't spend that time upfront thinking.
And so the more we can spend that time upfront thinking about the right things in the boundaries and understanding kind of the limitations, we then will actually have a better understanding of what to build and what to know."

Storyblok
Does your current CMS hinder agile development and deployment?
Storyblok is a cloud-native API-first CMS that minimizes technical dependencies, enables your development team to create frontends with whatever technology they already know, and your business users to create content only once and publish on multiple platforms.
There are numbers to back this up: Storyblok cuts down development time by 50% and provides 582%ROI over 3 years, a study by Forrester found.

Zoho
You have probably heard of Zoho. They have been around for 27 years and now offer an all-in-one platform with over 50 mission-critical apps that offer everything from sales to marketing and HR to accounting. All in one platform- connecting the entire enterprise, ensuring communication between departments.
But its the user privacy that Zoho offers that makes it stand out. Not only do they not make money by using your data for advertising, but they also have EU datacenters which is a huge win for GDPR compliance
See for yourself. Come to their user conference, named Zoholics on 26th and 27th of September 2023 in Cologne, where you can sit down with experts and get to know the people behind the software. Plus, you get 25% off with the promo code OMR_CTO. Just go to: www.link.alphalist.com/zoho
codecentric
The codecentric Culture and Career Podcast is unique for a company podcast. It is just employees talking freely about their daily life - from IT consulting projects they are working to imposter syndrome. We support this because we think it's pretty cool that codecentric simply lets the colleagues talk about everything, no matter what it's about - project business, Imposter sydrome, further education or parental leave in the consulting business. For us it is definitely worth a recommendation. Listen in - the codecentric Culture and Career Podcast. Note - its in German.
