Professor Ibram X. Kendi | How To Be Anti-Racist | The Search for Racial Equity
Professor Ibram X. Kendi is one of America's foremost historians and leading antiracist voices. He has spent his career driving racial research, research-based policy innovation, educational and advocacy campaigns, and narrative-change initiatives. Professor Kendi recently published the books How to Be An Antiracist and Antiracist Baby to educate people on how to join the fight against racism. In both of these books, he explains it's not enough to be "not racist." He argues that to end racial disparities, it takes antiracism: actively standing against racism and replacing racist policies with policies that promote equity. For more information about Prof. Kendi and his books, please visit https://www.ibramxkendi.com/. More and more people are starting to realize that being neutral or passively opposing racism actually perpetuates racial injustice. Many of these people want to do more, however, they don't know where to start or they're not convinced they can have an impact as an individual. This talk will empower those who want to get involved by educating viewers on the concept of antiracism and providing them with tools and strategies they can use to play a more active role in building an antiracist society. The Search for Racial Equity Series is a global forum offering an in depth study and dialog of racial equity and justice, through forthright discussion and a syllabus that intends to amplify the most authentic and powerful voices of our time and of this movement. Nikole Hannah-Jones & Dr. Kamau Bobb | The 1619 Project | The Search for Racial Equity
Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist, Nikole Hannah-Jones sees her "work as forcing us to confront our hypocrisy, forcing us to confront the truth that we would rather ignore." She holds nothing back as she discusses civil rights and racial injustice as a student of history. "As power always does, power protects itself." Given this, will the current actions of policy makers and corporations cause transformative change or will they just subvert and delay the real change necessary to reorder the hierarchy? Ms. Hannah-Jones's parallel command of language and truth are awe-inspiring and force us to take a hard look at our assumptions and question the completeness of the history that we learned and how that has shaped our society today. The 1619 Project aims to reframe the history of the United States by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of the US's national narrative. Slavery is sometimes referred to as the country's original sin, but it is more than that: It is the country's very origin. Ep104 - Bob Costas, Julius "Dr. J" Erving, George McGinnis, & Dan Issel|Dropping Dimes
We welcome panelists Bob Costas, Julius "Dr. J" Erving, George McGinnis, & Dan Issel to tell stories of the American Basketball Association and how it shaped the current NBA style of basketball. The legitimate rival to the NBA in its heyday, the American Basketball Association (ABA) captured a large and extremely loyal fan base with its unique style of play. What is now common play in the current NBA was pioneered by the ABA which was known for its high scoring, fast tempo and stylish plays—including popularizing the three-point shot and the dunk contest. The ABA and NBA merged in 1976 bringing several teams to the NBA and the 3-point shot to the NBA in 1979. In 2014, the Dropping Dimes Foundation, Inc was created as a way to give back to ABA players. The foundation's main focus and concern is for the well-being and betterment of former players of the American Basketball Association and their families, who are experiencing financial or medical difficulties and have encountered significant financial hardship or sickness. After the NBA-ABA Merger, the ABA itself ceased to exist as a going concern. Former ABA players who were not part of the Merger, or who did not play long enough in the NBA to receive vested pension benefits, were generally left in disadvantaged financial circumstances.
