Four Perspectives: Burnout: Beyond workplace stress
Our latest Four Perspectives episode with Prof. Lesley Braun and the fx Ambassadors provides healthcare practitioners with a concise overview of the landscape of burnout beyond the workplace and its management with key nutrients, herbs and psychosocial strategies.
The Ambassadors and Prof. Braun begin by clarifying our understanding of what burnout is and the important distinction between anxiety and stress. They highlight the normalisation of stress in society and the need to understand burnout. There is discussion around the pros and cons of diagnostic criteria of burnout, covering two diagnostic surveys along with the use of salivary cortisol testing..
An important perspective shift is introduced on the concept of ‘adrenal fatigue’, and the need to reconsider this concept and move towards HPA dysfunction and cortisol dysregulation. This reframing better supports the practitioner's approach to managing burnout andemphasises the significance of rest and recovery, with a unique perspective on tissue healing and the time needed for nerve tissue recovery.
Key herbal and nutritional therapeutics are discussed with the ambassadors providing an overview of nutritional interventions, focusing on magnesium, deficiency states, specialized pro-resolving mediators, B vitamins, and CoQ10. The value of herbal remedies are also explored with a focus on effective utilisation of key herbs including withania, holy basil, kava, and saffron.
This Four Perspectives episode provides a valuable insight to address burnout within the healthcare community and your patients.

Men’s Mental Health: A patient’s perspective with Dr. Michelle Woolhouse and Nick Bracks
According to Beyond Blue, on average, one in eight men will experience depression and one in five men will experience anxiety at some stage of their lives. As we move into November, we are taking some time to focus on Men's Mental Health.
In this week’s new episode, men's mental health advocate Nick Bracks shares his journey of depression, addiction, and obsessive tendencies from the perspective of a patient with our Ambassador Dr. Michelle Woolhouse. Together they discuss how certain behaviours can be masking men’s mental health – particularly anxiety and depression. They talk of the importance of taking micro-steps, meeting patients where they’re at, and the impacts of cultural and societal expectations on boys, teenagers and men, who are often raised to avoid exploration and expression of deep feelings.
Nick shares the steps he took that helped him find balance again in his own life, as well as advice both for men experiencing mental health challenges and the practitioners who support them to create a blueprint for long-term positive mental health that can help men navigate their journey from depression to dynamism and vitality.

REPLAY: Metabolism, Hormones and Weight Management with Emma Sutherland and Dr. Jade Teta
Dr. Jade Teta, Naturopath, author and podcast host, joins our ambassador Emma Sutherland, as he describes the connection between metabolism, hormones and weight management.
Working to define metabolism, Jade debunks the calorie-in vs calorie-out paradigm often relied on for weight management, replacing it with a holistic view of metabolism as a sensory apparatus within the body operating to respond to multiple stimuli including stress, hormones and temperature. Describing the difference between metabolic flexibility and inflexibility, Jade highlights the benefits of both a short and extreme diet and a gentle and prolonged diet for weight management.
Turning to hormonal influences, Jade and Emma discuss the role of leptin, insulin, oestrogen and progesterone on metabolism and in turn, weight management.

Breast Cancer: The role of prevention and modifiable risk factors with Dr. Michelle Woolhouse and Dr. Nicole Nelson
Join Integrated GP Dr. Nicole Nelson and fellow integrative medicine GP and Ambassador, Dr. Michelle Woolhouse, on this detailed podcast on breast cancer prevention. In this episode, they explore the multifaceted landscape of modifiable aspects that can significantly impact breast cancer development.
Researchers have outlined a host of modifiable factors, including early pregnancy before the age of 30, breastfeeding support, regular exercise, alcohol consumption, breast density screening, minimizing exposure to endocrine disruptors, and supporting oestrogen processing and excretion. Alcohol consumption, in particular, is dose-dependent and shown to increase breast cancer risk, making zero intake the safest option.
Dietary choices play a pivotal role, with fibre, indole-3-carbinol-rich foods like cruciferous vegetables, vitamin A, iodine, selenium, and gut microbiome health all influencing breast cancer risk. Additionally, understanding and influencing beta-glucuronidase activity, maintaining bowel regularity, and supporting detoxification phases (Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3) are key strategies.
They also explore how adopting a diet aligned with genetic heritage, or the Mediterranean Diet can offer protective benefits.
An interesting and often overlooked aspect, insulin regulation, and how it acts as a tumour growth factor, is covered in detail. Strategies encompass choosing foods with a lower and sustained insulin response, intermittent fasting, selecting sugar alternatives, and closely monitoring sugar levels in food.
Endocrine disruptors, with their wide-ranging negative effects on oestrogen transport and hormone receptors, are discussed in-depth. Functional tests are also outlined such as saliva, serum, and urinary oestrogen metabolites, gut beta-glucuronidase activity, genetic SNPs, and morning spot urine iodine to provide a comprehensive understanding.
Lastly, they explore the significant impact of exercise on reducing mortality risk post-breast cancer and emphasise the importance of prioritising sleep quality as an essential lifestyle aspect.

Gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulseiwicz and our ambassador Emma Sutherland explore the holistic method of supporting the gut microbiome and reducing risk of developing chronic disease.
Dr. Bulseiwicz explains that we’re uniquely bio-individual - all the way down to the level of our gut microbiome and a person’s health is intrinsically connected to its own unique gut terrain a.k.a. gut microbiome.
He also discusses the benefits of maintaining a healthy gut lining by supporting mucus secretions such as secretory IgA and the usefulness of probiotics, and provides us with recommendations on how to choose the “right” probiotic for our patients.

Understanding Paediatric Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A focus on PANDAS with Emma Sutherland and Keonie Moore
Naturopath Keonie Moore shares in-depth clinical experience on managing Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections (PANDAS) with Ambassador Emma Sutherland. Together they define the key differences between PANDAS and PANS, as well as the the common triggers, signs and symptoms to help clinicians pinpoint the condition - including an overview of the research history backing this relatively newly understood condition. They also discuss the immune-based pathophysiology that not only involves the nervous system but centralises around gastrointestinal health, triggering systemic inflammation.
Keonie shares several components of her Moore method; a treatment plan where specific microbiome, nutrigenomic and pathology tests are recommended to help clinicians determine PANDAS and their therapeutic recommendations. Finally, Keonie details an in-depth, informative, and practical case study of a ten-year-old boy who had severe tic disorder, outlining her strategic approach to the case, therapeutic considerations and dosages, and ultimate outcome.
