How to Make Pain-Free Decisions in Business
I'm often asked how I make decisions in business. And, I hear a lot about past decisions clients have made that they regret. We talk about both of those things in this episode.
How can you make decisions that are pain-free AND in line with the way you naturally make them?
How do you not make yourself wrong for, or get stuck in, decisions that you've made in the past?
Let's find out!
It's a fun topic. It's a necessary topic. And, one that I hope helps anyone out there who might be struggling. Or, just provide greater insight into YOUR process.
"Decide today how you want to think about the decisions that you've made and lean into trusting yourself on the ones that are coming. Let yourself be the person who..."

Trauma-Informed Coaching
Today, we are talking to Lindsay Poelman (coach) and Kathy Kinghorn (therapist) about the importance of being trauma-informed. If our goal is to help our clients get where they want to go and for us to "do no harm" in helping them get there, then we really need to understand trauma. We need to know what it looks like, how it can present, how to let people have their stories, how to help them work through it, and when to pull in or suggest additional support.
In this episode, we get into:
- Big 'T' trauma vs. little 't' trauma
- Relationship betrayal trauma
- The individual nature of trauma
- Safety, particularly in change work
- The benefits of coaching and therapy (separately or together)
- Gaslighting - what it is and how to recognize it
As well as, how to listen to your gut and why we're not in a rush.
"We all need a witness to our story. We need a witness to the beauty, to the tragedy... And, your story isn't the same as mine."
- Kathy Kinghorn
"I like to validate the hell out of their experience - as much as they need to get to the deepest, safest, most loving, acceptable and compassionate place possible. Then, let them lead themselves where they want to go."
- Lindsay Poelman
"And, change work, healing work, business growth... they're not about speed. If you're trying to rush, you're gonna miss the good stuff. So, thank you both for slowing it down."
- Caryn Gillen
Lindsay and Kathy are training coaches to become trauma-informed, especially in regard to relationships. They want coaches to understand how prevalent trauma is and how much they can do to support their clients in the midst of it - because it will come up.

That is what we're diving into in today's episode of the podcast.

Selling is helping, selling is leadership - if you approach it that way. And, people want good leaders. We want to know how to take advantage of the awesomeness around us. So, it’s our job to do that for our people.

People Pleasing: What It Is and How to Stop
"People pleasing is us bending ourselves into a pretzel, in order to show up in the way we think another person wants us to - so that they can avoid dealing with us as we really are AND we don’t have to deal with their discomfort."
Today's podcast guest is Life Coach and Mentor, Kelly Tadlock. After leaving a job in Silicone Valley ("There was not a dollar amount you could pay that was going to get me to stay.") and disappointing a lot of people along the way, Kelly found the thing that fills her up. She let go of the people pleasing (that is so ingrained in all of us) and became a huge proponent of self-connection and self-care (the real kind).
"Self-kindness is non-negotiable," she says, "and it's usually the worst news I can give someone. Most of us have this real fear of 'if I’m nice to myself, I won’t do anything,' because it doesn't feel as active or as productive."
But, it helps us become the person we want to be and create the life we want to live. We have the ability to continually come home to ourselves and reveal who we are – even to ourselves – on deeper and deeper levels. And, it's worth it.
Having the courage to disappoint people, to let them be wrong about you, and to ask for help in the midst of all the messiness yields the most amazing, delicious fruit. The kind that makes you say, "This feels so good. I didn’t even know this was possible." And, who doesn't want that?
Your first act of radical self-kindness? Listening to this episode and checking in with yourself... how are you, really? And, what do you need the most right now?
As always, I would love to hear what bubbles up for you around this! DM me on Instagram if you want to have a two-way conversation (@caryngillen).

Make BOLD Moves
Today, we're talking about the leadership, feelings and work required to make a big shift. We explore the different stages of competence (unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence, unconscious competence/mastery). And, talk about moving through them to make bold moves.
"The only thing that keeps us from where we are today and the thing we want that's over there is the fact that to get from here to there is relatively uncomfortable. We lose that connection to our mastery."
A few questions to explore after listening to the episode:
>> Where are you currently feeling unconscious incompetence? (Those places where you don't even know what's going on but you wish you did.)
>> Where are you in conscious competence doing something that you don't ever want to do again? Where can you drop something that you're actually pretty good at because it's not what you're here to do?
>> Where are you going to celebrate your unconscious competence or mastery? What are you good at that you don't even have to think about? (It comes naturally to you and maybe other people notice or even point it out.)
Main takeaway: big shifts and bold moves are uncomfortable. But, most of us want an outcome and a life worth feeling incompetent for little bursts of time.
Give yourself a break. And, let's make BOLD moves!

Disruption IS Alignment
When I was hosting the Disruption Sessions earlier this fall and was talking about disruption and disorientation, I was reminded that not everybody wants to lean into that. As human beings, we like to stay comfortable and safe.
But, here's the thing... disruption is actually a way to alignment - which most of us DO want.
If we want something new or to do what is good and right, that usually requires some sort of disruption, disorientation, discomfort. We can't get there by clinging to what we already know.
"The work we're asking people to do (as mentors and coaches) is to step up to the plate of their lives." It's not easy but it's required.
I want to honor that. Yes, it's work - but it's worth it.
What are you pushing on or bristling up against currently? I want to know. DM me on Instagram if you'd like to discuss further. I'm always here for that! (@caryngillen)

I'm Here to Disappoint
What would it be like to not betray yourself?
Allow me to give you some context... I was listening to Brene Brown recently, and she was talking about how we will often betray ourselves before disappointing others.
This is a big one for me. I have definitely grown in this area but there are still times and spaces it sneaks in. I'm wondering if it's the same for you?
So, what if we tried that on this week? What if, before any response or action we took, we stopped to consider is this FOR me or is this a betrayal of myself?
Let's see what feels hard, what feels easy and what has just become a habit.
Can't wait to hear what comes up for you around this! DM me on Instagram to let me know.
And, don't forget to take care of you - the real you.
