Episode 61: Embracing Uncertainty and Emerging Strategies in Powerlifting ft. Mike Tuchscherer

We’re excited to welcome Mike Tuchscherer to the podcast this week. Kevin and Mike hop onto the mic for a longer episode where they chat about the similarities and differences between PPS and RTS. Topics covered include: Mike’s background and the conceptualization of RTS How variations play into powerlifting The uncertainty of powerlifting programming and coaching Differences between athletes and their effects on training Mike began powerlifting in 1997 and has been studying athletic training ever since. He quickly became a State record holder in Indiana and Kentucky when he was still a Sophomore in High School. And he continued to develop his talent and ability throughout his college career and into the Open division. Currently, Mike’s achievements include: Winning the Gold Medal at the 2009 World Games (first male in USA Powerlifting history to do this), Winning 8 USA Powerlifting National Championships, 2 Bronze, 3 Silver, 1 Gold medals in IPF World Championships, Set 3 IPF World Records multiple times, and competing internationally both single ply and unequipped. In addition to many championships, Mike is best known for founding Reactive Training Systems, where he and his staff provide practical and methodical powerlifting knowledge to athletes who are serious about reaching the next level in powerlifting. RTS provides proven knowledge based on years of experience and, trial and error, and top level competitions. Episode 60: Pain is Just an Emotion ft. Dr. Mike Amato

Kevin gets on the mic this week with physical therapist (and PPS lifter!) Dr. Mike Amato. In this episode, Kevin and Dr. Mike chat about pain, fear, emotions, and the mental aspect of powerlifting. Mike is a 2013 graduate from Boston University where he earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. He also earned his Bachelor’s in Athletic Training from Boston University in 2011. Michael has clinical experience in a variety of settings, from community hospitals to private gyms, where he enjoys working with a wide range of patients in helping them achieve their goals. His passion is blending his background as a strength coach with modern advancements in pain science in providing individuals with the necessary tools to make a positive change in their pain, function and performance. Episode 57: Applying the Acute Chronic Workload Ratio to Powerlifting ft. Dr. Tim Gabbett

This week, Kevin brings a special guest on the show all the way from Australia! Dr. Tim Gabbett has over 20 years experience working as an applied sport scientist with athletes and coaches from a wide range of sports. Kevin & Dr. Gabbett chat about the application of ACWR to powerlifting programming and coaching. They also chat about velocity-based training and the science behind coaching itself. Dr. Gabbett holds a Ph.D. in Human Physiology and has completed a second Ph.D. in the Applied Science of Professional Football, with special reference to physical demands, injury prevention, and skill acquisition. He has worked with elite international athletes over several Australian Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games cycles. He continues to work as a sport science and coaching consultant for several high performance teams around the world.
