Episode 80: Evolution of Coaching Practices ft. Vin Mangione and John Flagg

In this episode, Kevin joins Vin Mangione of Kenmore Barbell & Fitness and John Flagg of Clinical Athlete to discuss coaching relationships and the evolution of their coaching practices. John and Vin are both athletes on Team PPS, but between the three coaches, they coach over 150 athletes worldwide. Vin Mangione holds an associate’s degree in Business from Niagara County Community College and a BA in Nutrition & Health from the State University at Buffalo. In 2015, he opened Kenmore Barbell & Fitness after spending time at his high school alma mater as a strength and conditioning coach. He’s recognized as a USAPL Club Coach, coaching 30+ local, national, & international athletes. John Flagg holds a BS in Athletic Training from Salisbury University and MS in Public Health Education and Promotion from the Pennsylvania State University. He offers online strength sport coaching and currently works for Clinical Athlete as a provider. Episode 79: Fatigue, Coaching, and Athlete Decision-Making ft. Dr. Austin Baraki

Kevin hops back on the mic this week with Dr. Austin Baraki of Barbell Medicine. The pair discuss fatigue, powerlifting coaching, and how athletes make decisions through their differing viewpoints. Dr. Austin Baraki is a practicing Internal Medicine Physician, competitive lifter, and strength coach located in San Antonio, Texas. Originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia, he completed his undergraduate degree in Chemistry at the College of William & Mary, his doctorate in medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. After a 15 year career as a competitive swimmer through the collegiate level, he discovered the barbell and began training for strength and competitive powerlifting. He  also coaches individuals ranging from beginners of all ages to national and internationally competitive athletes, including 2018 63kg open USA national champion Sam Calhoun. Episode 75: Hypertrophy’s Effects on Strength Athletes ft. Dr. Jeremy Loenneke

In today’s episode, Kevin brings on Dr. Jeremy Loenneke from the University of Mississippi. Together, they discuss scientific research in the field of strength training, specifically targeting how hypertrophic training and muscle building affects gaining strengths in the powerlifts. Dr. Jeremy Loenneke graduated with a PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Loenneke had previously earned a Master’s degree in Nutrition and Exercise Science from Southeast Missouri State University. His research focuses on skeletal muscle adaptations to exercise in combination with blood flow restriction. His recent work has answered several important methodological and safety questions with respect to applying blood flow restriction. Dr. Loenneke is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Physiological Society. He also serves as a peer reviewer for several journals including Sports Medicine, AGE, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and the Journal of Applied Physiology. Zak and Steph have recently founded “The Level Up Initiative,” which is an online platform dedicated to driving positive change into healthcare through mentorship of student PTs and new graduates.
