People always ask me what my favorite podcasts are. And there’s always one that comes right to mind: The Singletrack Podcast. Covering all of the best athletes, hottest topics, and gripping race analysis on some of the most marquee events, Singletrack has grown to one of the biggest podcasts in the sport of trail running. And today, we have on the man behind the brand, Finn Melanson. Finn Melanson is the host of the Singletrack Podcast and runs all of the content behind the Singletrack brand. He currently manages Singletrack as his full-time career and is super passionate about adding valuable insights to the trail running community. He has an extensive background in endurance, as he’s thru-hiked the AT, competed in many ultras, and continues to run and race to this day. But what really makes Finn an amazing guest to listen to  is his philosophy, approach, and mindset when it comes to running. Especially when it comes to finding the best way to mold running into your lifestyle. In this episode, Finn breaks down how he started Singletrack, how you can structure your running in a way that best fits your true path in life, how he went full-time managing Singletrack, and what his biggest trends he sees ahead for the sport of running. Heart Rate Training For Ultrarunners: Your Complete Guide

Heart rate is one of the most important metrics to track when it comes to training for an ultramarathon. It can be a sign of your overall fitness, day-to-day fatigue, and can help you gauge intensity zones during your run workouts. So, how do you utlize heart rate when it comes to training for an ultramarathon? There are a lot of different schools of thought when it comes to this, but I’ll share the science, what’s worked for me, and what I’ve seen other successful ultra runners do when it comes to heart rate training. That way, you’ll know exactly how to incorporate it next time you hit the trails, the track, or the road. In this episode, I cover how to assess if heart rate training is the best method for you (hint: it’s not for everyone), how to use heart rate to measure your fitness, and what optimal heart rates you should be shooting for in your training sessions. Jeff Garmire on Breaking the John Muir Trail Unsupported FKT

The John Muir Trail is known as one of the most brutal FKTs on a thru-hike to nab in the United States; especially if you’re going for the fastest known time on that trail. It’s short enough to need speed. But the terrain and elevation gain is tough enough to challenge even the most seasoned thru-hiker. So, when Jeff Garmire ventured out to break the unsupported FKT for the JMT, he knew he was in for a challenge. But despite the difficulty of it all, Jeff got it done and secured the FKT in 3 days, 47 minutes, and 56 seconds. Jeff Garmire is one of the most accomplished thru-hikers of all time, having over 15 FKTs under his belt, including ones on the Arizona Trail, Colorado Trail, Long Trail, and now, the JMT. He has also completed the Calender Year Triple Crown, which consists of completing the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail all in one calendar year. He is also the author of the book, Free Outside, which chronicles his Calendar Year Triple Crown Journey. In this episode, Jeff breaks down the details, stories, and challenges he faced on his JMT unsupported FKT. Plus, he shares how he was able to get over the mental challenges that came from starting and completing the challenge. And he shares the importance of doing big challenges that scare the heck out of you. This is an episode you do not want to miss! Jeff is also coming out with a new film called Free Outside, which documents his unsupported FKT of the Colorado Trail in an epic production that captures the challenge in a way where no unsupported FKT has been documented before.
