3114 Weather the Storm in Your Marriage
Just like in nature, storms hit marriages unexpectedly, with gales of conflict, thunderous arguments, and torrential emotions. But fear not, for just as a lighthouse guides a ship through a violent storm, you can weather the storm in your marriage. Now there are different shapes and sizes of storms. You can have little squabbles that fade quickly, like a single gray cloud overhead. Or you can have torrential downpours that result in flash flooding everywhere. All of a sudden, you have rivers where there were once sidewalks. Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. https://createyournow.mn.co Part of the struggle is recognizing if you're even in a storm, and should you be concerned about it. In the early days of marriage, a couple may face the storm of adjusting to the realities of living together. Differences in habits, communication styles, and expectations may create tensions and lead to conflicts. You know, things just don't jive together like they used to. Dating was much easier because you were still trying to win the prize. But then, you have the pressure of society's expectations, financial difficulties, and parenting challenges, which can further intensify any storm. So the first thing is: Are you in a storm that you should be concerned about? There is no right or wrong answer. But I would say this. If you keep whispering under your breath about something your spouse is doing that you don't like or whatever it is continues to bother you, there's a storm brewin'. If you find that you all have a shouting match over a particular subject every time it comes up for conversation, there's a storm brewin'. Half the battle is knowing that a fronts coming. When you look at the weather map, if you see that a major storm is approaching, you can prepare accordingly. But if you allow it to surprise you, for whatever reason, then you have to deal with the onset of panic and lack of preparedness. Think of a tornado. You have to be focused, diligent, and present to know what is happening in your marriage. But I want to say this too. Every storm eventually passes. However, if you're not in the right state of mind, it can take you under. So if you want to gain strength through adversity, you have to learn how to weather the storm. The K.I.S.S. ~ Weather the storm! And when you weather the storm, you aren't doing it from behind You want to get in ahead of the storm. 1. Embrace Effective Expression Just as calmness follows a storm, open and honest communication can dissipate the intensity of conflicts. Remember the wisdom of Proverbs 15:1, "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." It is crucial to listen attentively, empathize with one another's perspectives, and express thoughts and feelings in a respectful manner. Aim to address issues promptly, focusing on finding solutions rather than dwelling on the problem itself. AND...you have to know when to talk about it. What you are looking for is common ground to come together so you can work in a manner that supports each other. 2. Build a Foundation of Trust and Forgiveness Trust is the bedrock upon which all thriving marriages are built, and forgiveness serves as the healing balm to mend any cracks that may emerge. As Ephesians 4:32 reminds us, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." Prioritize the practice of forgiveness even during stormy times, allowing for growth, healing, and the restoration of trust. You've got to forge the walls to your marriage with trust and forgiveness. Let's say you've experienced infidelity in your marriage, which threatened to end your marriage in divorce. Obviously, trust is an issue. However, through seeking counseling and engaging in open conversations, you all decide to move forward as a couple, choosing to forgive and work towards rebuilding trust. Each day, you make conscious efforts to rebuild your relationship on a foundation of trust, transparency, and forgiveness. 3. Seek Professional Guidance and Support Just as sailors rely on navigational tools during a storm, seeking professional guidance can provide the necessary direction and strength to navigate marital challenges. Professional counselors, therapists, or trusted spiritual mentors can provide valuable insights, tools, and perspectives to help couples weather the storm and emerge stronger on the other side. Your marriage is not immune to the storms that life brings, but remember that with faith, resilience, and intentional actions, you can triumph over adversity. 3113 When Peace is Hard to Find
Often in the world of parenting, when peace is hard to find, we are faced with a whirlwind of challenges that test our patience and push us to our limits. However, there are ways to find rest and calm for our weary hearts. Parenting is undoubtedly one of life's greatest joys, but it can also be overwhelming, exhausting, and at times, downright chaotic. Amidst the constant noise, mess, and struggles, finding peace can feel like an impossible dream. Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Being a parent is not fair. It's downright abuse at times. We are asked to do the unthinkable by kids who take us for granted and lack respect for our hard work. They expect us to feed them every day and provide a roof over their heads. Now you know I'm stretching this a little bit. But if you don't find the humor in the chaos, the stress will bury you quicker. If you want to find that peace, you have to create your sanctuary. The K.I.S.S. ~ Create your sanctuary! 1. Embrace Imperfection As parents, we often put immense pressure on ourselves to be perfect, to have all the answers, and to create an idyllic environment for our children. But the reality is, perfection is an unattainable goal. Instead, let us learn to embrace imperfection and be gentle with ourselves. Allow yourself to make mistakes and acknowledge that it's okay not to have all the answers. Remember, your love and presence are what truly matters to your children. 2. Practice Self-Care Amidst the never-ending tasks of parenting, we often neglect our own well-being. It's important to remember that taking care of yourself is not selfish but rather essential for your ability to be the best parent you can be. Carve out time for self-care, whether it's taking a long bath, reading a book, or simply going for a walk. When you prioritize self-care, you are refueling your soul and replenishing the energy needed to face the challenges of parenting. 3. Seek Support and Rest in Faith Parenting is not meant to be done alone. Reach out to your support system, whether it's trusted friends, family members, or parenting groups within your community. Share your struggles, seek advice, and allow yourself to lean on others. Additionally, find solace in your faith. Turn to scriptures, such as Matthew 11:28, which says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Connect with your spiritual beliefs, seeking peace and solace that goes beyond human understanding. Parenting is an incredible journey that comes with its fair share of challenges. Remember that it is in the midst of chaos and noise that we can find moments of tranquility. Instead of viewing roadblocks as obstacles, you get to choose to see them as stepping stones on your journey. 3111 A Little Goes A Long Way
Embarking on a healthy living journey doesn't have to be overwhelming. Oftentimes, people feel the pressure of having to make radical changes all at once. Stop and smell the roses. A little goes a long way. Because when you think about it, who wants to increase stress and become more discouraged? Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? I don't know about you, but it's oh-so-easy to do everything for everyone else, yet not give a second thought about yourself. Don't throw away the greatest gift given to your family. YOU!!! By taking small steps toward a healthier lifestyle, you get to make a significant difference for yourself in the long run. So get ready to do....well, just a little. The K.I.S.S. ~ Do just a little! Now doing a little doesn't mean that you aren't doing anything at all. It also doesn't mean you get to be lazy. You are being very strategic with how you work your habits to support your everyday mission of living healthy. 1. Find joy in movement: Exercise is a crucial component of a healthy lifestyle, but it doesn't have to mean spending hours at the gym or running a marathon. Start by incorporating enjoyable physical activities into your daily routine. Take a leisurely walk in nature or dance to your favorite uplifting music. These activities can help boost your mood, improve your cardiovascular health, and increase overall fitness levels. Think outside the box. Don't do something that is normal for you. Take up a new activity that's fun and challenging in all the positive ways. Pickleball might be a good option. Swimming instead of running. Biblical Resource: Proverbs 3:8-9 reminds us that through honoring God with our bodies, we will find health and vitality: "This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones." 2. Nourish your body with wholesome foods: Nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining optimal health. Rather than completely overhauling your diet overnight, begin by making small dietary changes. Incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your meals, swap sugary drinks for water, or pack nourishing snacks like nuts and seeds. These small changes can gradually improve your overall diet and provide your body with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Biblical Resource: In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, we are encouraged to treat our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit: "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies." 3. Prioritize quality sleep: In our fast-paced world, getting enough sleep often takes a backseat. However, good-quality sleep is crucial for overall health and well-being. Establish a consistent sleep routine, create a calming environment in your bedroom, and try relaxation techniques such as meditation or reading before bed. These small changes can help improve sleep quality, boost energy levels, and enhance cognitive function. Biblical Resource: Psalm 4:8 assures us that a peaceful sleep is a gift from God: "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety." Let me share this with you. When you are making any changes to your routine, conduct it in a manner that you will succeed. In other words, don't set yourself up for failure. Remember, healthy living is a lifelong journey, and it's okay to start small. Life is a series of ups and downs, and all around, all that cause us to be uncertain in the unknown. But it's in the power of transition where greatness is made. Because once you have the trophy, what is there? The growth is in the transition. The celebration is in the transformation. Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? But when it comes to your dreams and goals, you cannot give up. You have to hunker down and fight for what's right by being the anchor for yourself. You have to be your biggest cheerleader. However, that doesn't mean you're going to get everything you go after. Life lessons are best learned in the trenches. Life is your everyday teacher. So take the breeze of opportunities, failures, and the few successes to do what you've be called to do. Take AIM on what matters and facilitate an atmosphere of growth. The K.I.S.S. ~ Facilitate an atmosphere of growth! There is no have to. You GET to facilitate. You GET to build up. You GET to encourage. You GET to have hard conversations. You GET to make memories. You GET to love unconditionally. You GET to live. So don't run away. Don't throw in the towel whether life is tough or easy. Facilitate an atmosphere of growth with grit, grind, and grace. GRIT - Persevere with passion for the goal at hand. What do you need to learn in this circumstance/situation? Find those teachable moments. GRIND - Life is hard, but the reward is greater. Keep at what matters. And you may have to ask yourself a thousand times in one day, "Why am I doing this?" Because you get to! Because you are facilitating an atmosphere of growth. GRACE - Always have your heart open to love unconditionally. That doesn't mean you give yourself a pass or others for that matter. In life, we often face challenges that seem insurmountable. During such times, it's reassuring to know that there is a wellspring of grace and love available to us, sourced from a power far greater than ourselves. Embrace God's unfathomable grace. His unconditional love and boundless grace can uplift our spirits, providing the strength and hope we need to persevere. 3106 Do Not Take It Personally
Precious moments and unforgettable memories make parenting pleasurable. But realistically, more times of backtalk and expletives are thrown your direction. Don't take it personally. Parenting is an incredibly rewarding journey, but it's also a lot of craziness and chaos; times that we don't always want to remember. They want it their way no matter what the consequences. Now hopefully, they learn fast that if you work within the rules, life is a lot more exciting with less yelling. Because who really needs all that stress? But it's in these moments that your child grows, and so do you. And ultimately, that's what we want for our children. Therefore, when all else fails, don't take it personally. The K.I.S.S. ~ Don't take it personally! 1. Cultivate Empathy and Understanding When your children resist your guidance, it's crucial to remember that their independence and desire to do what they want and express themselves are natural aspects of their development. Rather than taking their actions personally, you get to choose to approach these moments with empathy and understanding. Put yourself in their shoes. This way, you can better understand their perspective and respond with patience and compassion. Yelling, getting frustrated does not work. And as they get older, they'll just throw it back in your face. Create a safe environment for your children to express themselves while still providing guidance and setting appropriate boundaries. 2. Find Support Networks Parenting can feel so empty, often like a solitary journey, but it doesn't have to be. Seek out support networks of other parents who can empathize with your experiences and offer valuable advice. Join parenting communities, attend workshops, or join online forums or groups that can help alleviate the feeling of loneliness and provide invaluable insights into effective parenting strategies. When you engage with others who share similar difficulties, it reminds you that we're not alone, giving you the reassurance and strength you need to stay focused on raising your children well. 3. Focus on the Bigger Picture In the midst of challenging parenting moments, it can be helpful to remind ourselves of our ultimate aspiration as parentsβto raise children who have the power to impact the world around them positively. By keeping this bigger picture in mind, you get to transform moments of hurt into opportunities for growth and learning. Recognize that redirecting, teaching, and guiding our children are essential components of their personal development. Instilling valuable life skills and nurturing their character is going to enable them to navigate the world confidently. Embracing this broader perspective empowers you to transcend momentary difficulties and continue leading our children with love and purpose.
