106: A Work-Life Balance Lesson from a 6 Year Old with Mel Abraham
There's a lot of talk in the entrepreneurial world about maintaining a work-life balance, and today's guest, Mel Abraham, talks about the defining moment that made him focus on what that term really meant. A CPA by education, he was pushed out of a firm partnership and did what anyone would do… He dug his heels in and worked countless hours to keep profits coming in so he could support him and his son. However, when his then 6-year-old, Jeremy, drew a picture of his dad surrounded by computers and phones while working, he knew something had to change. Today it's no longer about the myth of work-life balance – it's about finding work-life harmony so his entrepreneurial dream can coexist with the responsibility and gift of being a father. Mel has a way of breaking down and simplifying this complicated topic so we feel connected to those we care about and our businesses at the same time. He also drops some serious, game-changing knowledge on marketing and intellectual property that you don't want to miss. -- Question Highlights: What's one of your superpowers? What is one regret you have? Who is someone who has changed your life? What is something generous you've done lately? After you realized your son only thought of you working, what did you do next? Why do people tend to abandon their why or their above the line stuff? What's the common thread between you and your friends that makes you such success stories? What role has generosity played in your success? Why do you think some people have a hard time asking for help? What's the most common cause of people getting stuck? What do you teach at your academy that's so unique? How did you view money growing up? In This Episode We Talk about: The moment that caused Mel to improve his work-life balance Time-blocking to do more reflecting, connecting and rejuvenating Connecting with people on a level where they feel they're cared about Why it's so important to protect your intellectual property Why Mel thinks indecision is dangerous Why there is no competition to your unique view (just competitors) Recognizing that everything we create has value The significance of the photo Mel included in his book And so much more… Mel's Thoughts… "If my greatest success was raising my son as a single, full-time dad, then I did OK when I was here." "Work-life balance is a myth. It's about getting work-life harmony." "My son didn't need the profits, he needed the presence." "The more we can make people feel more connected, the more people feel cared about, the more we all grow and get better from it." "Give because it's the right thing to do." 105: I Had A BREAKDOWN (True Story!)
If you've been listening to my podcast for a while now, you know that I try to be as transparent as humanly possible. While most only teach the rosy stuff, I feel it's imperative to see what's normal so you know if you're on the right track. No one is perfect. Case in point, earlier this week I had a breakdown. Yep, an all-out toddler breakdown, which included throwing my phone on the floor and blurting out whatever came to mind. Lori and I have both had a lot going on the past few months – Lori's Bliss Project event, my Mastermind, other speaking events for Lori (where I helped her prepare), Lori's book launch and our new Aligned course. And this doesn't even include our normal everyday tasks. So, we were wrapping up our two-day recharge at the Ritz in Laguna and about to head back into reality when I checked my email and received a message that just set me off. It instantly made me feel like I wasn't living life on my terms. Enter tantrum mode. I can totally laugh at it now, but all the stress had built up and I had to release some of it. And this is where tribe saved me… Lori was there to let me vent and talk it through. Then I also texted a couple of my super successful entrepreneur friends and they also reassured me that this was normal and gave me a couple stories of their own as well as some tips to get through it. We NEED people like this in our lives. Without them, you'll bottle up all the motions and eventually explode (have a tantrum like I did). "The pace doesn't need to slow, but the releasing of the pressure does need to be more often." We need to put a focus on self-care and give ourselves a break now and then. It is perfectly normal to have breakdowns and feel tired. "You're always going to be tired from struggle or tired from making it happen – I choose the latter." Stay the course. Talk it out. Let off some steam with your go-to person. And take as good of care as possible of yourself. But keep up the pace so your dreams come true. You've got this and we're all here to support you! In This Episode We Talk about: Why it's important to be transparent and share your struggles How tribe saved Chris during his breakdown The importance of self-care Resources: Ready to turn your 6-figure income into a 7-figure income? 104: Is the Law of Attraction Real...with The Manifestation Babe Kathrin Zenkina
There are so many different thoughts on the Law of Attraction, so I am super excited for Manifestation Babe (and expert), Kathrin Zenkina, to talk about it today. With her initial interest in the Law of Attraction beginning at the young age of 16, she later realized just how much more was behind truly manifesting all the things you desire into your life. Manifesting is far more than just thinking about something you want. Instead it's about becoming the version of yourself who already has the thing you desire and then taking action to make it happen. During our conversation, Kathrin breaks down the manifestation process even further and does it in such a clear and concise way that I know it will help you shift your practices (manifesting, abundance and attracting) immediately. Kathrin has made it her mission to impact lives, influence others and share her knowledge through the online space. Be sure to check out the resources on this page to connect with her and all the tools she uses help others attract abundance. -- Question Highlights: What's one of your superpowers? Who is someone who has changed your life? What is something generous you've done lately? Tell us more about your brand and how you got into it. Is the Law of Attraction an energy magic trick or is it the result of someone wanting to do better? What's more important – to think about the thing you want or to feel it? How does someone move from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance? Do you ever fall back into a "lack" mindset? How did you feel about money growing up? Where did the wildly generous part of your personality come from? What are you most excited about now? In This Episode We Talk about: How the book, "The Secret," has influenced Kathrin's business Adding physical action to the Law of Attraction Starting small with manifestation Kathrin's manifestation process Why feeling takes priority over thinking How Kathrin gets out of a scarcity mindset with her "Gratitude Rampage" Being grateful for the small things Why it's important to maintenance your abundant mindset The Law of Polarity to strengthen our "focus muscle" Why parents need to be mindful of the money mindset beliefs they're showing their children And so much more… Kathrin's Thoughts… "There's the Law of Attraction, but there's also the Law of Action." "We are drawn and attracted to certain things for a reason. We're either meant to teach them or do something with them." "If you're always looking for the big things in life to be grateful for, you're always going to be waiting to be happy." "It's a game of focus rather than a game of elimination." "Money is a tool to elevate your human experience." "The more you send out the flow of money, the more money that's going to come back." "The more you have, the more you can give." -- Kathrin Zenkina is the creator of Manifestation Babe, a best-selling author, manifesting expert, success strategist, mindset coach for spiritual entrepreneurs. 103: A Ferrari, A Landscaper, and a Dent - Who Should Pay
Today, I want to tell you a story about a Ferrari, a landscaper and a dent. I normally wouldn't call out the make of the car involved in this story, but the fact that the car is a Ferrari is of significance and represents all the hard work I've put in to own it. This story was set into motion while getting my hair cut, like I do every two weeks. I park in the same small parking lot that has an attendant, but this time, the attendant had some bad news when I came back. Someone had backed into my car resulting in a dent and scratch. Of course my first reaction to this was anger, but I quickly caught it and reframed. Amazingly, the attendant was super proactive and got the information of the man who'd backed into my car. He was a landscaper with an old broken-down truck. As soon as I got in my car, however, my struggle began. Who pays for this $2-3,000 repair? It wasn't my fault, but this hard-working landscaper was likely not going to be in a position to pay it. I called this man and he immediately took responsibility and wanted to pay for the damage. While speaking through broken English, he offered to pay cash. When I told him the amount though, he sighed. That was a lot of money to him, so he would instead need to make an insurance claim to pay for it. So here's the dilemma. It was his fault, but did I really want to put this burden to pay when it would put such a strain on him? And furthermore, if he did indeed file a claim, it would cost him at least $500-$1,000 for his deductible (and a premium increase) and cost me a ton more of my time and energy until the insurance company figured it out. So I made the decision to pay the repair cost because I can, and because I can do it so much easier than he can. "Too many people are chasing pennies instead of using that time to create dollars." I don't want to be one of those people. I don't want to feel bad energy or waste any of my time while I can be doing other more, high-energy, money-making things. "Do what's right, not righteous." Maybe it's not always easy, but it's karmically better for you. "I am in this position because I've always made decisions like this – even when I couldn't do so as easily." And when you consistently create a pattern of decisions like this, you will experience wealth – in all forms – far beyond your wildest dreams. When have you given up the opportunity to be righteous and done what's right instead? In This Episode We Talk about: Retraining your mind to have an attitude of abundance. 102: The Formula to Losing 40 lbs and Gaining Millions of Dollars with Drew Canole
I've gotten to know today's guest, Drew Canole, super well over this past year, and wow, has it been life-changing. A fellow Midwesterner, he was born and raised in Michigan but went after other opportunities and more growth in Florida. While he did find success in the real estate/mortgage arena, the weight piled on and so did his unhappiness once he realized he was escaping his emotions and certainly not living in his highest purpose. Shortly after, Drew had an eye-opening dream where he died and only five or six people showed up to his funeral. It was then that he made the decision to make a radical shift and do something that changed people's lives. He wanted to inspire people in big way – and leave a legacy that's remembered for decades to come. To promote this change, Drew moved to California to surround himself with new people and a new awareness. He documented his weight loss journey in an attempt to help and influence other people in both health and mindset. 101: PROOF - If You Have MORE, Someone Else Does NOT Have Less
There are many things that can hold you back from accumulating wealth, but today, I want to cross one of those off the list. I'm going to prove that if you have more, it doesn't mean that someone else has less. You know that saying, "your slice of the pie?" It makes it sound like there's only so much pie and if someone gets a bigger piece, another gets less. Ok, if we're talking literal pie, yes, this is true. But from a wealth perspective, wealth is NOT a pie. It's a living, growing, shrinking and expanding organism. So comparing wealth to a pie doesn't work. And if you think it does, it's only going to hold you back from accumulating wealth because you'll think someone else is getting hurt if you do. "Wealth accumulation is not a zero-sum game." Hundreds of years ago, land was the biggest measurement of wealth. The more land you had meant that someone else had less or you bought it from them. But today, we're so fortunate because there are so many different ways to accumulate wealth. "Wealth is always being created." Here are a few examples of what I mean: There is always something to sell. Products, ideas, services etc. – you name it. Even your salary job. You're selling your time/skillset for money and in return, you create something for your boss to then sell and make money. Events and eCourses. Let's say Susy goes to an event or buys an eCourse for $500. Susy isn't poorer, she's actually gained value and could maybe further turn that value into $100K because of what she learned. "Value is nothing more than an amount that we all agree it to be." At the end of the day, just know that there is an endless amount wealth available and your ability to create wealth determines how wealthy you'll be. You are entitled to as much as you learn to create – without taking anything away from anyone else. In This Episode We Talk about: Different ways to accumulate and measure wealth How wealth is always being created Supply and demand and how it affects wealth Resources: Ready to turn your 6-figure income into a 7-figure income? 100: This Powerhouse Paid Off $50K and Donated $120K in Just Two Years with Adrienne Dorison
I think a lot of you are going to relate today with my guest and entrepreneur, Adrienne Dorison. Like many, she found herself in a corporate job that was "OK" and paid the bills, but she ended up starting a business/side hustle because she needed to create space in her life for something that she loved. Initially her goal wasn't to replace her corporate income, but when the corporation had a problem with her side hustle, she was nudged into it. At the time, Adrienne was trying to pay off $50K in student loan debt, however without a full-time job, she worried that it would take her forever to pay if off. So, rather than allow her boyfriend (now husband) to pay off her debt for her, she made an aggressive plan to pay it off herself – and give back at the same time. Adrienne wanted to balance out the negative feelings of shame that came with debt or bad credit and instead made it a feel-good experience. Today, giving is built into her business's structure – both monetarily and by sharing her experiences. Tune in to hear more about Adrienne's driven and giving spirit. -- Question Highlights: Who is Adrienne Dorison? What was your transition like from corporate America to entrepreneurship? Why did your corporate job have a problem with your blog? Why do we stay in bad jobs for so long? What was one of your big "crash and burns?" What is it like to be the bread-winner of your family? What's your advice to couples who wake up in this position? How do you make it work? How did you work giving into your business's DNA? Where does your generosity come from? In This Episode We Talk about: Adrienne's transition from corporate America to entrepreneurship How shame around debt/bad credit led her to donate How she paid of $50K in debt in 6 months (while still giving) How Adrienne made paying off her debt a feel-food experience Spousal communication and balancing feminine and masculine dynamics How Adrienne likes to take action from the place of how she wants to feel Why it's so important to share what your business gives And so much more… Adrienne's Thoughts… "I needed to create space in my life for something that I loved." "Giving grounds you in what you have." "I want to make a lot of money so I can give a lot away." "When you earn more, you can give more." -- Adrienne is the CEO of Lean Growth Group, a business operations consultancy that helps companies double their results, with half the effort. Adrienne is a certified LEAN Six Sigma consultant + SCRUM expert trainer from the world of corporate manufacturing, who has created her own proprietary systems + tools specific to small business owners. She understands how to simplify complex business problems and help teams restructure so they can scale to the next level. Adrienne has been featured in a number of publications including Entrepreneur, Business Insider, and TIME, and she's personally passionate about helping entrepreneurs earn more to give more. She started her business by getting serious about her debt and paid off over $45,000 of student loan debt in just 6 months, all while giving away money at the same time. Her company has now given away over $120,000 to meaningful causes in less than 2 years, and has empowered and equipped her clients to do the same. 99: The MISSING LINK to YOUR SUCCESS
This isn't the first time I've discussed the one thing that can truly unlock what you're seeking – and that's giving. "Giving is the absolute secret to unlock every single thing you want." Wherever you are or where you want to be, giving more will ultimately get you there. But what if you're already giving? My advice? Give more. Now don't get me wrong, it's not just giving money. Below I've listed six areas in which you could possibly give more to. EFFORT: Perhaps you think you already work hard – and I have no doubt that you do. However, what if some of your current efforts are misguided? What if you focused more on income-producing activities and put more work in your business? TIME: This encompasses all areas. Could you spend more time with your business partner? Perhaps you could spend more time looking outside of your business or studying/bettering your craft? MONEY: I often hear that people are stuck on a plateau. If you're pinching pennies (which isn't a bad thing), it may be time to give more money to your business. Add that new team member, do more research or take out more ads. Being cheap is smart, but not if it's stopping your business in its tracks. So get creative and ask for a loan, an investor etc. RESOURCEFULNESS: No money? No problem. As I just mentioned, get creative. Find an intern who will work for free or next to nothing. Trade favors. Resourcefulness fixes everything. RESEARCH/PLANNING: The technology and business worlds change rapidly. It's in your business's best interest to keep up on your research and give more time to planning ahead as much as possible. LOVE: Give more love to yourself, your business, your co-workers or business partners. Give love outside of your business – without expectations. Love always comes full circle, and you never know who will be able to help you down the road. Which area(s) could you give more to? No matter the answer, giving is the missing piece when it comes to achieving the level of success you want to have. Now, who's ready to commit to that next level of giving? In This Episode We Talk about: The missing link to your success – giving How to give more to get more The six areas where you could possibly give more Resources: For the Love of Money, ep. 7 – 30 Books In 30 Days https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/7-30-books-in-30-days-my-lessons-learned/id1215523596?i=1000383319132&mt=2 For the Love of Money, ep. 16 with Bob Burg https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/16-the-go-giver-profit-by-giving-with-bob-burg/id1215523596?i=1000384952645&mt=2 For more stories and tips on becoming unapologetically wealthy, follow me @Chriswharder on Instagram and check out fortheloveofmoney.com.

98: No Arms, No Legs, No EXCUSES, with Kyle Maynard
My history with today's guest, Kyle Maynard, goes back a decade or so to my banking days when I heard him speak at an event and left completely inspired. Imagine my surprise when I met him again two years ago and got a chance to talk with him at Lewis Howes' Summit of Greatness event. I'm so glad that we were able to get him on For the Love of Money and share more with all of you! Many of you have likely heard about Kyle and his epic story. But for those who don't know, he was born with a rare condition called congenital amputation that left him with arms that end at the elbows and legs that end around his knees. He credits his parents for helping him navigate life with this challenge (without prosthetics) and for encouraging him that anything was possible. And wow, did he ever prove that there were no limits – so much so that others felt his "disadvantage" was actually an unfair advantage! In Kyle's younger years, he found success in both wrestling and football, but most recently he became famous for becoming the first man to climb (bearcrawl) Mount Kilimanjaro. Today he continues to thrive on physical challenges, however he's added an extra focus on photography and film. Kyle shares his incredible story and "No Excuses" philosophy in the hope that it inspires others to banish their excuses and make the world a better place. My hope is that his story inspires you to do the same. -- Question Highlights: What was it like to climb Mount Kilimanjaro? Is filming/photography your new rush? How many times a year do you speak? What does your hustle look like now? What common threads do you see between those who are successful and those who are not? Where are you going to take this newfound love for photography and film? What's one of the best business decisions you've ever made? How can people get past their BS excuses? Now that you've raised your speaking fees, do you see a difference in the quality of events that you speak at? What cause(s) do you care the most about and what causes should we be more aware of? In This Episode We Talk about: Kyle's childhood journey growing up with congenital amputation Using doubts to fuel you to be and do better Kyle's success in athletics (wrestling, football, crossfit) Kyle's Mount Kilimanjaro climb (bearcrawl) The importance of quality relationships (the "beer test") What it means to do the "deep work" The value in creating a structure for decision-making Learning from your excuses How and why Kyle raised his speaking fees And so much more… Kyle's Thoughts… "The map is not the territory." – Alfred Korzybski "Focus on the deep work." "Create a structure so you don't have to make the same decisions all the time." "There is no end to our excuses." "No excuses give you the freedom to try." -- Kyle Maynard is an entrepreneur, speaker, best-selling author, award-winning extreme athlete, and the first man to bearcrawl to the top of the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro (19,340 feet), and the summit of Argentina's Mount Aconcagua (22,838 feet), the highest peak in both the Western and Southern Hemispheres. Born with a rare condition known as congenital amputation, that left him with arms that end at the elbows and legs that end near his knees, he learned early on to live life independently and without prosthetics. Kyle thrives on physical challenges and is a champion wrestler, CrossFit Certified Instructor and gym owner, competitive Mixed Martial Arts fighter, world record-setting weightlifter, and skilled mountaineer. He is on a mission to make the world a better place and to inspire others to do the same by sharing his story and living by example. He travels across continents, speaking to thousands of executives and students, athletes and warriors, to share his "No Excuses" philosophy. He is a humanitarian who passionately supports numerous charities, and commits time and resources to work with wounded and recovering U.S. military veterans. Kyle is the New York Times best-selling author of his life story, "No Excuses," and the focus of the moving ESPN documentary, "A Fighting Chance." 97: Should You Feel Guilty for Having "Wealth?"
Should you feel guilty for having more than others? This isn't a new question, but it came up on my recent trip to Guatemala with Pencils of Promise, an organization that helps villages provide sustainable schools, clean water and sanitation. These are very remote and poor villages that lack many of the modern "comforts" we have here in the U.S. So when this question came up again, it got my wheels turning. Should I feel guilty? My answer was no, but I quickly let my thoughts put doubt in my head. Should I feel bad about this? Once I was able to reframe these thoughts I stuck to my original answer and here's why. Without excess wealth or having more than others, we can't help anyone else. We need those extra resources, connections etc. to do great things. The only time you should feel guilty is if you have excess wealth and you're not doing anything to create more of it. Or of course, if you're playing small… that doesn't serve anybody. We've been gifted multiple opportunities so we can help others. My trip to Guatemala was proof of that. That's why I came home more excited and even more inspired to do more. "Home represents opportunity." I plan to use the excess leverage and opportunities I have to create more positive change in the world. And I can't wait for you to do the same and live up to your fullest potential, too. In This Episode We Talk about: Whether or not you should feel guilty about having more than another The infiniteness of money and wealth Using excess leverage to create change Resources: Pencils of Promise http://PencilsOfPromise.org For more stories and tips on becoming unapologetically wealthy, follow me @Chriswharder on Instagram and check out fortheloveofmoney.com.
