He is also the founder of Legion Athletics. His simple, science-based approach to building muscle, losing fat, and getting healthy has helped him sell over a million books. His work has been featured in many popular outlets, including Esquire, Men’s Health, Elle, Women’s Health, Muscle & Strength, and more, as well as on FOX and ABC.IntroductionBigger Leaner Stronger: The Simple Science of Building the Ultimate Male Body focuses on the best tips for building muscle and losing fat. Michael Matthews gives you a blueprint for how you can start eating and exercising your way towards a bigger, leaner, and stronger body. He claims this book should offer the advice required to gain 10 to 15 pounds of lean mass in just 8-12 weeks.StoryShot #1: Progressive Tension OverloadMichael Matthews believes that progressive tension overload is fundamental to growing and sustaining a highly muscular body. He defines progressive tension overload as the practice of incrementally increasing the heaviness of the weights that you are lifting. As your muscles grow, using the same heaviness of weight will lower the tension placed on your muscle fibers. But to continue to grow your muscles, you must continue to increase this tension level by increasing the heaviness of your weights. Michael Matthews advises that even if you listen to all the other advice in this book, you’ll still fail to build muscle if you do not progressively overload. So always add another rep or a little bit of weight compared to your last workout. Matthews explains that the concept of progressive overload is not solely a modern one. Instead, the ancient Greek hero Milo was said to have carried a cow on his back daily from childhood. But over the years, the cow grew in size. Crucially, as the cow grew, so did Milo’s physique. Milo’s strength grew in proportion to the increase in weight he had to carry. Finally, progressive overload can be a highly effective motivator. If you notice progress in the weight you can lift, you notice progress even if progress is not yet visible on your body. Track what you lift, so you beat that weight every workout. Achieving incremental goals activates the reward center of the brain, which releases dopamine. Over time, these regular dopamine releases can change neural pathways to signal the expectation of rewards when it comes time to work out. This rewiring of the brain can improve workout stamina and motivation to hit the gym even on a tough day.StoryShot #2: Use Free Weights and Compound LiftingStoryShot #3: Feed Your Muscles With Food and RestThis was first published on 28/5/2021. The book is an account of his trip on Mescaline, the insights he experienced, and the esthetic beauty he saw. Huxley’s psychedelic experience helped him develop psychological and philosophical ideas around perception. He believed we live in a narrow field of perception. We need to open our minds to a broader perceptual experience to improve our lives. Because of his experience, Huxley recommended Mescaline to others.Similar to Brave New World, The Doors of Perception also describes how we can break away from normal perception and uniquely experience the world.Back in the 1930s, Huxley called Mescaline a poison worse than Soma. So it’s interesting to see how his perception of the drug changed within the 22 years of writing the two books.“We live together, we act on, and react to, one another; but always and in all circumstances we are by ourselves. The martyrs go hand in hand into the arena; they are crucified alone. Embraced, the lovers desperately try to fuse their insulated ecstasies into a single self-transcendence; in vain. By its very nature every embodied spirit is doomed to suffer and enjoy in solitude. Sensations, feelings, insights, fancies—all these are private and, except through symbols and at second hand, incommunicable. We can pool information about experiences, but never the experiences themselves. From family to nation, every human group is a society of island universes.” — ALDOUS HUXLEYMain Idea 1: Learning About The ExtractMain Idea 2: The Effects of MescalineMain Idea 3: Seeing Beyond the ObjectMain Idea 4: Seeing Beyond the SelfFirst published on May 20, 2022. Covey suggests that readers use a character ethic instead. A character ethic relies on timeless principles, like courage and integrity. To make this transition, you will have to go through what Covey calls a paradigm shift. An effective person has learned to make the paradigm shift from outside in to inside out. They have progressed along the growth continuum from dependence to independence and finally to interdependence. An effective person has also found the balance of production while increasing their capability to produce. To become an effective person, you have to encourage a paradigm shift in your worldview by adopting the seven habits of highly effective people. The first three habits are habits of self-mastery, or private victories. These are:Be ProactiveBegin With the End in MindPut First Things FirstThese three must come first. After adopting these habits, you can use the three habits of public victories. These three habits are built on interdependence. These are:Think Win-WinSeek First to Understand, Then to Be UnderstoodSynergizeThe last habit relies on continuous improvement and is key to the proper functioning and renewal of the first six. This habit is:Sharpen the SawPart II - Private VictoryHabit 1: Be ProactiveHabit 2: Begin With the End in MindHabit 3: Put First Things FirstCriticismMany people criticize Seven Habits of Highly Effective People for being vague and outdated. However, these were not problems with the original text, but rather with its followers. Covey and his work were revolutionary and many people did not comprehend the depth of the content in his book. He often gave speeches to follow up on his book’s ideas and would give more in-depth explanations to answer questions from his audience, who are often comprised of authors, journalists, entrepreneurs, business owners, marketers, educators and other professionals.Get the full text, animated, and PDF version of this summary and many more bestselling nonfiction books for free here: https://go.getstoryshots.com/6kUcFirst published in 2020. We all understand the effect that psychological trauma can have on individuals. Trauma can impact the way people perceive themselves and the world around them. Do you imagine a world of fantasy and irony? Or do you get skeptical immediately? Psychedelics have been cast under that kind of light. This bleak light comes from decades of hysteria, negative reviews and punitive legislation. However, that's not how the story has always been. The author of the book, Michael Pollan, was born too late to partake in the acid trips that Woodstock is famous for. He was also young enough to get a taste. This was before the mass hysteria and legislation cast an image of psychedelics as the devil's agents. Pollan’s journey begins with a paper he had ignored earlier. It led him to take a deeper look into the scientific study of the effects of psychedelics. The meat of this book starts when the study of psychedelics and their uses was highly condemned. At the time, Pollan decided to gather first-hand experience of their usage. While he had put little thought into such substances and their effects, this was a chance to satisfy his curiosity. “One good way to understand a complex system is to disturb it and then see what happens.” - Michael PollanHow to Change your Mind is an inspired look into the effects psychedelics have on the mind. The exploits back up the mystical experiences of those who took psilocybin in a controlled test. These experiences increased Pollan's interest in the subject. About Michael PollanMichael Pollan is a storied journalist whose work has covered periphery topics that many don't think about or find absurd. Even then, his insights are eye-opening in most cases. His recent book, This Is Your Mind On Plants, is a remarkable collection of such insights.Although Pollan's roots are in journalism, his fame grew through his books. Pollan is also a Knight Professor at the UC Berkeley School of Journalism and writes articles on science and the environment.Pollan has earned both accolades and criticisms from scientists, therapists, and medical professionals. Most notably in 2015, he was a recipient of the Washburn Award. StoryShot #1: Psychedelics Went Through a RenaissanceA Cascade of TalentStoryShot #2: Psychedelics Had Potential to Revolutionize Natural History StoryShot #3: Society Initially Resisted Psychedelics StronglyStoryShot #4: An Underground Tour Helped Pollan Understand PsychedelicsFirst published on January 27, 2023. Making the right choices today can make a big difference in the years ahead. The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. How Not to Die examines the top causes of death in America. When it comes to tackling these key causes of death, nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches. Peer-reviewed academic studies support each of Dr. Greger’s approaches. The overwhelming conclusion is that a whole food plant-based diet is the most effective ‘treatment’ to prevent and cure America's biggest killers. You may be used to hearing that you should avoid eating certain foods. The common link between the most harmful foods is that they are animal products. Here you can find out why they are so damaging to your health. What you may not realize is that many foods are actively beneficial and some can help prevent and even treat killer diseases. Learn what to eat and what to avoid to give yourself the best chance of a long life. Other lifestyle changes, like regular exercise and stopping smoking, can help you on your way.   “I opened my eyes to the depressing fact that there are other forces at work in medicine besides science. The U.S. healthcare system runs on a fee-for-service model in which doctors get paid for the pills and procedures they prescribe, rewarding quantity over quality. We don’t get reimbursed for time spent counseling our patients about the benefits of healthy eating. If doctors were instead paid for performance, there would be a financial incentive to treat the lifestyle causes of disease. Until the model of reimbursement changes, I don’t expect great changes in medical care or medical education.” – Dr. Michael GregerStoryShot #1: There Are 14 Top Killer DiseasesStoryShot #2: Prevent Heart DiseaseStoryShot #3: Prevent Lung DiseasesStoryShot #4: Prevent Brain Diseases (Stroke and Alzheimer’s)StrokeAlzheimer’sStoryShot #5: Prevent Digestive CancersGo deeper with other books related to How Not to Diet: How Not to Diet by Michael Greger The Plant Paradox by Steven Gundry Fast Like A Girl by Mindy Petz The 4-Hour Body by Tim Ferriss Thinner Leaner Stronger by Michael Matthews The Obesity Code by Jason Fung Not A Diet Book by James Smith Fast This Way by Dave Asprey First published on February 25, 2023.
