His Dilbert series came to national prominence through the downsizing period in the 1990s America and was then distributed worldwide. Adams worked in various roles at big businesses before becoming a full-time cartoonist in 1995. By 2000, the comic had been published in 2,000 newspapers in 57 countries and translated into 19 languages.SynopsisHow to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big is a guide to succeed despite your failures. Adams admits he has failed at more things than anyone he has ever met. But, he managed to transition from working in an office to being the creator of a world-famous comic strip within a few years. The key to this success were fundamental principles that he picked up along the way. This book outlines these principles and how they will benefit you more than what society suggests is best for you and your future.StoryShot #1: Goals Have Two Major ProblemsSelf-help gurus have a knack for encouraging people to create and stick to goals. But Adam believes goals are for losers. According to him, the reality is that even the clearest goals have two problems that will always persist: Goals are future-oriented Goals can become overly-specific Firstly, there is the issue that goals are placed in the future, but we have to work in the present to achieve them. This means you are unlikely to see any results from your actions until much further down the line. Most people would find this reality frustrating and discouraging. The specific nature of goals can also lead to similar frustrations. For example, people often feel like failures if they don’t accomplish exactly what they set out to do. They may still be highly successful, but not meeting their goals leaves them feeling they haven’t accomplished anything. An example of this would be losing weight by a specific date. This goal prevents you from feeling successful during the journey of losing weight and will leave you feeling like a failure if you fall even one pound short by that date.StoryShot #2: The Effectiveness of SystemsStoryShot #3: Examples of SystemsDisclaimer: This is an unofficial summary and analysis.Editor's Note: This episode was first published in July 2021. This canvas was co-created by 470 practitioners from 45 countries. The book features practical innovation techniques used by leading consultants and companies worldwide. It is currently used by P&G, Amazon and Tesla to improve business efficiency. The book features a highly visual, 4-color design that simplifies powerful strategic ideas and tools.Business Model Building Blocks“A business model describes the rationale of how an organization creates, delivers, and captures value” - Alexander OsterwalderThe foundation of business models should always be what the authors call a Business Model Canvas. This canvas should provide a visual prompt for participants to focus on the crucial criteria. The aim of a business model canvas is to focus the discussion on strategic thinking rather than being distracted by small operational details. The building blocks that form this canvas make it dynamic. This means some options in certain sections will impose limits on or amplify other sections. The authors provide nine different building blocks that every business should incorporate into their business model canvas: Key Partners - You can start to control more market share simply by working together with other businesses. This cooperation can lead to a superior product and better supplier links. Key Activities - Your company will have its own key activities that lead to profit.  Value Propositions - These are groups of benefits which incentivize clients to work with you over your competitors. You can improve this category by innovating new products or optimizing them to fit client needs. Customer Relationships: Different industries and customers require different types of assistance. Customer Segments - Try to target specific groups of customers to gain competitive advantage in a few key areas. These groups are called customer segments. Key Resources - These resources can be used to gain a competitive advantage. This includes superior talent or land. Channels - You must develop communication channels other than advertising. Every product must be able to be scrutinized. Cost Structure - Your cost structure will determine your business structure. This is because your cost structure will place constraints on other parts of the business.  Revenue Streams - The authors describe the revenue streams as the arteries of the business model. This is because they obtain income but impose certain constraints on operations. Business Model PatternsUnbundled ModelsLong TailDisclaimerThis is an unofficial summary and analysis. This means you can identify this voice, which Singer calls your inner roommate, as the source of negative energy. For example, if you are feeling jealous, you should avoid finding ways to protect yourself. Look inside and find out what part of your voice is having a problem with jealousy. Singer explains that solving problems based on your outside world will be ineffective and short-term. Keller was a law school graduate who practiced law for a few years. But he felt unhappy with his life and decided to pursue his true calling of teaching self-improvement. Since then, he has worked within multiple organizations to help develop high achievers. Jeff’s articles have appeared in national and international publications, including: Selling Power, The Pryor Report Management Newsletter, The Toastmaster and The Chamber of Commerce Pacesetter. He is also a member of the National Speakers Association. Keller wrote this book to provide a clear outline of how you can advance your organization’s potential by improving your attitude.Attitude Is Everything covers multiple lessons on attitude. These storyshots will provide a concise outline of each lesson. These lessons relate to how you can harness the power of your attitude to reach your life goals. As humans, we tend to focus on the negatives in life. This negative outlook impacts those you complain to as well as your own beliefs and subsequent actions. This negative mindset and activity prevents you from reaching your goals. StoryShot #1: Our Thoughts Drive Our CircumstancesThe foundation of this book is the reality that our thoughts dominate and drive our circumstances. Your attitude toward your life and the people around you is your window to the world. If you think you can do something, then you can. If you think you can’t, then you can’t. You’re right either way, as your attitude will impact your outcomes. It’s the classic self-fulfilling prophecy. So try to change your attitude to one that is more positive. StoryShot #2: Your Attitude Is a Mental FilterKeller defines attitude as the mental filter through which we experience the world. Some of us see the world through a filter of optimism, while others perceive the world through a filter of pessimism. Some people see the glass as half full and some as half empty. Keller believes you can control your attitude, so you should keep your view of the world clean and clear. To illustrate this point, Keller compares attitudes to windows. Your window is your perspective on the world. We all start with a clean window when we are young. But with age, our window gets covered in dirt from everything life throws at us: criticism, ridicule, rejection and disappointment. This dirt is what makes us doubt our capabilities. Doubt feeds negative attitudes. Our job is to keep our view of the world clean. In other words, try to keep a positive attitude. Use a filter of optimism instead of negativity. Instead of saying “I can’t,” you should be saying “I can.” Then, when your window is clean, you can finally see the world outside is full of positive opportunities. If we can choose our attitude toward our circumstances, we can also choose all our reactions and responses. The example Keller gives is the mindset of Victor Frankl, an author and a concentration camp survivor. Frankl believed that those who were naturally more pessimistic often died in the concentration camps, while those who were optimistic were more likely to find the hope and strength to survive. ---First published in June 2021 Learn more about your ad choices. If you don't already have the book, order it here or get the audiobook for free on Amazon to learn the juicy details.StoryShots Book Summary and Review of Beyond Order by Jordan PetersonJordan Peterson is a Canadian YouTube personality, clinical psychologist, and professor of psychology at the University of Toronto. He grew up in the wastelands of Northern Alberta. He earned his Ph.D. and post-doctorate in clinical psychology from McGill University prior to working as a professor at Harvard University.Peterson’s various TV appearances for commentary on personality, religion, and cultural Marxism put his name on the map. More recently, in 2016, Peterson released a series of YouTube videos that criticized new discrimination laws based on gender identity. Because of these videos, he received significant media coverage ranging from criticism to praise.Peterson describes himself politically as a classic British liberal and traditionalist. He supports individual liberty and maintaining tradition. That said, he doesn’t align with a right-wing ideology, even though he is often mischaracterized as right-wing.Peterson is passionate about exploring the world. He has flown a hammer-head roll in a carbon-fiber stunt plane and explored an Arizona meteorite crater with astronauts. He has also taught mythology to lawyers, doctors, and business people. He has consulted the UN secretary-general and served as an adviser to senior partners of major Canadian law firms.Beyond Order is a follow-up to Peterson’s International bestseller, 12 Rules for Life. In Beyond Order, he provides 12 more rules for living happier, more fulfilling, and successful lives. While 12 Rules for Life offers an antidote to chaos, Beyond Order asks the reader to go further. Neither complete order nor complete chaos will bring you fulfillment. So, Peterson’s 12 rules in Beyond Order encourage the readers to reach out into the domain beyond. Doing so is essential for adjusting to an ever-changing world.Let Innovators Inspire YouAlthough Peterson describes himself politically as a British liberal, he insists liberals need to remember that social institutions exist for a reason. The reason they are maintained over long periods is that they offer many benefits. At the same time, Peterson offers advice to conservatives. Although social institutions are important, conservatives should be open to new ideas and ways of thinking. We should not marginalize those who are seeking to improve and innovate how society works. The world will change, and you have to be ready to adapt. So, Peterson suggests the readers look at successful individuals and creative inventions as inspiration. All thriving societies feature a bottom-up hierarchy. This structure enables having an impact on the world but only on the condition that you accept the balance of society. Once you accept this balance, you must seek beneficial solutions. However, only those solutions to important problems are viable that can be repeated without decay across repetitions.Imagination Is A Key to SuccessRatingWe rate this book 4.6/5.DISCLAIMERThis is an unofficial summary and analysis. This episode was first published on 8/5/2021. Seth Godin is the author of over 18 books. Free Prize Inside won Forbes’ Business Book of the Year in 2004, while The Dip was a Business Week and New York Times bestseller. In 2018, Godin was inducted into the American Marketing Association’s Marketing Hall of Fame. He also runs a blog named in 2009, by Time, as one of the 25 best blogs. Introduction to The DipThe Dip builds on Seth Godin’s insights introduced on his blog titled ‘The four curves of want and get.’ Every new project starts out exciting and fun. But after this initial excitement, the project will get harder and less fun. Eventually, you will hit a low point in your pursuits. Seth Godin calls this challenging period a dip. This dip is one of three things: an opportunity, a cul-de-sac, or a cliff. You must quit the cul-de-sacs and cliffs so you can reallocate resources. You must persevere with all other pursuits, no matter how hard, so that you can become the best in your world.StoryShot #1: Be the Best You Can BeOur society obsesses over those who are number one. We give plaudits to the song or sports person that sits at the top of the charts. Similarly, we reward those employees that are performing the best. But the result of this obsession is that rewards are heavily skewed. Godin points out that, on average, first place generally gets ten times the winnings of whoever places tenth. This is Zipf’s law and is found in almost all fields. Zipf’s law suggests a non-linear relationship whereby rewards reduce exponentially. With limited time and opportunity to experiment, we intentionally narrow our choices to those at the top. Therefore, you need to do everything in your power to become the best. If you are not going to be the best, then you should just quit. Crucially, Godin does not necessarily mean the best anybody could ever be. Instead, he explains you need to be the best for you, right now, based on what you believe and know. You need to be the best in your world. StoryShot #2: The World Is ChangingStoryShot #3: The CurvesCurve 1: The DipCurves 2 and 3: The Cul-de-Sac and the CliffThe Cul-de-SacThe CliffStoryShot #4: The Seven Most Common Failures When Pursuing SuccessRelated Books to The Dip Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin When by Daniel Pink The Mamba Mentality by Kobe Bryant Fortitude by Dan Crenshaw Mindset by Carol Dweck Grit by Angela Duckworth Linchpin by Seth Godin Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins Make Your Bed by William McRaven 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do by Amy Morin Disclaimer: This is an unofficial summary and analysis.First published on 4/10/2021.
